Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Indeed, computers are fabulous but if something goes wrong you may not have all the skills to get it working properly again.

Not my favorite. I do like decaf green tea with white tea blend. Add honey and I'm all set.

Anyhow saw the doctor yesterday morning. On Z-pap for 10 days. And a 12-hour cough medicine. Per doc, hard to tell if it was bacterial or viral.

Not strep which I was concerned about during day #3. Today is 1 week. No fever, lungs are clear; not the flu, not true sinusitis, not bronchitis.

Felt almost normal this afternoon. Then an hour ago put my head on my pillow and started coughing. Tried to sleep for 30 minutes but almost every 5 minutes I started to cough. Sooooo, here I am in the "sick" room which contains a bed, tv and computer. All good except my husband is on the other side of the house (small home, not really that far away, separated by kitchen and dining room).

Nina | 6069 comments Good luck, Linda. I once had a poem published and the first line was, "Oh, flu why can't thou flee..." The title of the poem was "The Uninvited Guest."

message 7504: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Good title, Nina - uninvited for sure.

Woke up this morning and my throat and head - 90% better!

message 7505: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Glad you're feeling better, Linda.

We had just finished dinner last night & I was debating whether or not to eat dessert when Pip ran into the house & cuddled up against me. He'd been skunked yet again. Oy! He didn't get hit too hard, just a little on one side, but it certainly banished any thoughts of more food. As a dieting device, I don't think it will catch on, though.

Erin found that mixing the baking soda with Dawn dishwashing liquid made it a lot easier to get it deep into the fur, so after washing him once with the Dawn, I rinsed him & then washed him with that mixture. It took over a quart of vinegar to rinse it all out, but he doesn't smell at all, thankfully. Lily's face still smells occasionally.

message 7506: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yeah Linda sounds like the Uninvited Guest has gone. Good riddance

message 7507: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Oh my goodness Jim. Skunked again. You must really give out a long sigh. Poor Pip.

message 7508: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Do you have a family of skunks?

message 7509: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) No, just a lot of skunks passing through this time of year as the young ones go off to find their own home, just like the raccoons & possums. I hit one of a pair of young coons that ran out in front of me the other morning. I hate that even though we have far too many of them.

message 7510: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments I'm sure we have skunks in the woods and glad I've not encountered one.

As for raccoons haven't seen any since the hummingbird feeder is down!

message 7511: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Maybe I will today or over this long weekend I'll get to some of those TV shows I've been missing. I spent most of the day sleeping, reading, & generally getting achy from sitting around too long since a really sharp pain in my back drove me to the doctor's yesterday morning where I found I have pneumonia.

I finished the book, a brand new one in Modesitt's Recluce series late last night. (Review here. I thought I'd be able to sleep in, but woke up at normal time, a little after 4am, & laid around in bed trying to decide if I should go into work or not. I decided not. My wife & boss were pretty clear about me resting a lot so it doesn't get worse. I feel pretty good, though. No more pain when I cough, thankfully. Modern drugs rock.

message 7512: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Listen to your wife Jim. I am sure she has her worries about you not taking care of yourself. Pneumonia is not to be fooled around with even though the medicine is a life saver. Take Care/chores will always be with us.. And have a very Happy Thanksgiving you and your family.

message 7513: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Also Happy Thanksgiving to all my goodread friends.

message 7514: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I did, Nina. I'm glad I didn't go in today. I went out to the shop about 6:30 & practically crawled in an hour later. Who would have thought some final finishing on a torsion catapult would wear a person out? It's a little catapult! Just a 16" base & arm, but it's powerful.

It's weird, but I actually feel worse today than I did yesterday. The stabbing pain is gone, but I'm getting chills & have no energy.

message 7515: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Happy Thanksgiving Everyone

message 7516: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Happy Thanksgiving to all. Just in case you need it, here's the link to the original Alice's Restaurant on YouTube. It's an annual event for us.

A chilly start today again with temps in the mid 20s, but there's no wind & it's supposed to get up to 50 today.

I am pretty wiped out still. I didn't get up until 6 & only managed 2 hours in the shop before coming back in to crash for 2 hours.

message 7517: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Super song / story - Alice's Restaurant.
Years ago we saw Arlo Guthrie a few days before Thanksgiving and he performed this song. Then for a few years he stopped performing this song.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Another wonderful weather day for late November. Only 20 degrees with nice sun. Looks like a nice fall crisp day. I've only stepped out onto the deck to breathe in some air. Taking it slow this morning. Still in my bathrobe. On my second cup of coffee and then I'll get going with my day.

Sometimes we just need to sit back and luxuriate with all the goodness.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The 2 new horses are settling in. Pumpkin (14.2h, 6yo, QH) & Khan (16h?, 3yo, TB) are rescues from 2 different organizations. After months of looking without anything being available, both were suddenly flooded with horses. I think some time limit ran out on displaced horses from the Florida hurricane earlier this year.

New Vocations halved all of their adoption fees for December, so Khan was only $250. Marg was mostly looking in the $2500 range for something like Khan for months. He does have a suspensory injury, but that seems to be healing well & she's not planning to turn him into a show jumper. He was well vetted & is doing fine.

For over a year, ever since we lost Speedy, she's wanted another pony that anyone can ride, so something like Pumpkin. She was willing to pay up to $1000, but hadn't found anything suitable. Pumpkin was full price from the KY Equine Humane Society, but was still only $600.

Pumpkin, the 14.2h QH fit in without a hitch since he's going to be at the bottom of the pecking order. He's a curiosity, but mostly ignored. OTOH, Khan is a very alpha horse. He's a little bigger than Topaz, was cut very late, & is an energetic TB. Even in the paddock he was showing he was king. He squealed & kicked at the fence. He smelled the piles of poop in the paddock & kicked everyone else's poop piles to pieces then strained to poop on top of them. Not much over the fence action when they sniffed noses, though.

We let him out with just Pumpkin & Khan just checked the place out after a brief sniff. Then we let out Topaz who has been top of the herd for years. It was hilarious & embarrassing! Topaz got an erection as they sniffed each other & put his tail up. He started peeing a little bit often & spread. He looked just like a mare in heat. It was the weirdest thing.

We let them work things out for 15 or 20 minutes & when they'd settled down to just grazing, we let Chip out. Chip immediately got between Topaz & Khan. When Khan tried to approach, Chip chased him away. Topaz is HIS buddy. Khan kicked at Chip a few times & once hit Topaz, but never hit Chip. Chip charged Khan a couple of times & kicked, but no contact.

So now we kind of have 2 herds. They stay about 50 yards apart with Pumpkin mostly sticking to Khan, but no one pays him much mind. We'll have to see how things go. Khan will grow more confident as he settles in so I'm sure he'll try more. I hope Chip & Khan don't get into it too much or hard.

Chip was also cut late & generally won't start anything, but he also won't be bullied. He never backed down from Cutter much & Cutter was a lot bigger, meaner, & fiercer than Khan. Cutter spent a lot of years racing & was in his prime (about 10) when we got Chip. Khan has never raced & is still awfully young. We'll have to see...

message 7521: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Sounds like you got your Christmas early. Have fun with your new additions.

message 7522: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm not sure if horses are Xmas presents, but we got them. Name change - The name 'Khan' wasn't working out, so we're going to call him Tango instead. Since we got 2 at the same time, that makes me want to call the other one Cash, but he's definitely a Pumpkin. I got home & saw him standing in the field. 10 minutes later he was in the exact same place & position. He's also very round.

It seems like everyone settled down. Chip was quite a bit further from Topaz today while Tango & Pumpkin were closer. He wasn't the least concerned. Tango kicked Chip once earlier today. Chip looked at him as if to ask, "What was that?" A little bit later, Tango went after Chip a little more & Chip kicked him in the barrel. Tango will not get anywhere near Chip's hind end now & is exceedingly respectful of him.

Erin rode Tango while I rode Chip around the farm this evening. It was a short ride & Tango was very alert, but not really spooky. It went well, but Tango has a long way to go. He's only 3, so that's not surprising & we're pleased that he's so calm for a young TB. They're mostly a lot of energy with very little brains.

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments Well, we had our first snowflakes in Omaha,Nebraska today. So we had at least 5 days in December with no snow!

Not much snow---it will melt in a few hours. But is is a sign that winter in yet again is sneaking up on us!

of the four seasons, winter is my least favorite.

Had a cat for 14 years and his name was Pumpkin. I like the name - even as a term of endearment!

Indeed this fall has been very crazy weather-wise. We may get light snow showers this weekend. Hey, as long as it doesn't stick.

Last night and night before we had some rain.

Nina | 6069 comments I once had a cat named Rover. When we first got him my husband threw a small rubber ball across the room and "rover" ran and retrieved it; thus that fact and we thought he actually thought he was a dog so his name seemed to fit. Once I had him in a cat box to take to the vet and while in the waiting room the receptionist came out and said, "You can bring Rover in now," and then I heard one of the people in the room say to the man next to her."I swear I heard that dog meow." end of story.

message 7531: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, good names and what lucky horses to find a good home.

message 7532: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Rover for a cat? LOL! Animal names can be fun & revealing. Marg really goofed with Indy. He was definitely a Dennis the Menace. We've had some good names over the years, though.

Uncle Smiley was a pup left by a feral mutt & was half wild his first couple of years with us. He would great everyone by ducking his head & lifting his upper lip in the center as he gazed up. Super nice dog with a lot of personality. Munchkin was our first Jack Russell, so the smallest we'd ever had. He was really a very big dog, just in a small body, though.

message 7533: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments In addition to my cat Pumpkin we had two twin black cats named Lucky and Inky. It's fun to try and come up with a well-fitting and different name for pets.

Uncle Smiley!! Munchkin! Great names.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments What am I doing today? It's Thursday so off to work in the afternoon. This morning getting caught up on household paperwork.

message 7535: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I like the name Munchkin. Our Rover cat really had some funny dog like characteristics like following me outside and when I'd stop at a neighbors home, he'd wait on the porch for me to come back out. He also sat in a chair like a person with legs stretched out. Once when it was very hot outside he came in and sat like that and then let out a big sigh as he seemed so pleased it was cool inside and one of my friends sitting across from him let out a big laugh. He then glared at her and got up and left the room. Don't tell me animals aren't thinking all the time.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Animals can certainly keep us amused. And loved.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Off tomorrow to prepare for company on Saturday. Celebrating my husbands birthday (Christmas Day) and Christmas with his family.

About 17 people total. Will be a little hectic and loud for a day!

message 7539: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Enjoy. James, Lauren, & Hank are coming tomorrow for a few days. James is our oldest, Hank is a dog.

message 7540: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Jim, enjoy your family visit and Hank's!

Tom, boyfriend of my husband's granddaughter, her runs a Canine Academy and also boards dogs. Family members will bring their dogs to the "academy." Tom is known to be a dog whisperer and also is involved with wolves in Colorado.

Our house is too small for 17 people and 5 dogs!

Tom, boyfriend of my husband's granddaughter, runs a canine academy. Trains dogs and has a day care for dogs. Family will bring their dogs to day care. Not enough room in our house for 17 people and 5 dogs. Tom is known as a dog whisperer. Pretty talented. Also goes to Colorado yearly to visit a place with wolves (don't have too much detail on this perhaps I'll learn more on Saturday).

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Joy. We had a good ride yesterday with our kids. I rode Chip, Marg rode Pumpkin, James rode Tango, & Erin rode Topaz. Lauren took pictures & we recreated our horseback kiss from 5 years ago.

It's been fun having them here. They're leaving today & taking our presents for the family in MD with them.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Saturday we had my husbands family over. There were 12 of us total. Most hung out at the kitchen island in our great room (living room / dining area / kitchen). Can be a little hectic while cooking and opening up oven - have to announce - no one move - oven opening and such!

We had a spiral ham. Easy to cook, already cut. Family member made a delicious brussel sprouts cauliflower dish - yummy. We celebrated Christmas and my husband's birthday (born on 12/25).

Fun. A little hectic but nice to be with family. My family live 5 hours away so I won't be seeing them.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments What am I doing today? At work we are having a luncheon for the office workers. Then we are exchanging our Secret Santa gifts. Should be fun. Going into work an hour earlier for the luncheon.

Off tomorrow and don't go back to work until next Wednesday. This part-time working situation is really working out very well for me.
