Good for you, Jim. This is exciting news!

Ha ha!

As a teenager I hated mushrooms. My Aunt made me promise whenever served mushrooms I would always try one. She said I would one day get used to the taste and love them.

Sure enough, when around 21 years old this happened. Thank you again, Aunt Peggy!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Linda. It's odd how are tastes change over the years - or don't. I like vegetables a lot more now, but still can't stand even the smell of liver, especially beef liver. The texture & taste have always seemed practically poisonous to me. Marg likes it & loves chicken livers, but is kind enough to cook them only when I'm not around. Just the smell turns my stomach which is pretty amazing considering some of the things I've eaten. I've never been shy about trying new & different foods.

message 7454: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments The only vegetable I hated a a child were Parsnips. They aren't so bad now but hardly ever eat them, My husband will hardly ever eat rice as he had it too often in the service.

message 7455: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I had never heard of pizza as a child and had never eaten anything with garlic in it. Actually had never heard of it. I ate my first slice of pizza given to me by a neighbor when I was twenty seven. There were no pizza parlors in our city.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I remember watching my grandmother make her own pizza. It was delicious!

message 7457: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, are you Italian? The first taste of pizza for me was also delicious and it was made by my Italian neighbor. It was much later when I was in my forties that I first tasted lasagna and that too was introduced to me by an Italian neighbor.

We would eat beef liver at least 1x yearly. Somehow we haven't eaten beef liver in over 10 years. Liver and onions used to make my mouth water.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Before going off to work today, my husband and I are going for a walk by the lake. A short walk. Look at the foliage colors. Then we'll start attacking the leaves which have fallen. Backyard is practically covered! Warm day. Task should be somewhat enjoyable.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I am having tech problems and cannot stay connected to the Internet for long. So I may not be able to participate fully here. My emails are affected too. My kids are working on the problem.

message 7461: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We had our first frost this morning. I had to scrape my windshield. On the plus side, it was super clear so I could see so many stars it was incredible. The day has warmed up so that I don't need a jacket any more. Hopefully I'll get a ride in this evening.

On the downside, there is something dead & disgusting around that the dogs keep rolling in. We usually seem to find out they found it during meals when they cuddle up to beg. Not pleasant!

A skunk has taken up residence under Josh & Erin's garage. Both their dogs have been sprayed recently. Marg found Molly had been sprayed yesterday morning when Erin dropped her off. Apparently they ran out the dog door & then Erin called them to follow her as she drove up the road to our house where they spend the day. She let them in the back gate & left, but Marg made her return to wash her dog. We'll set up a trap for the skunk tomorrow night. In the meantime, the back yard is off limits.

Good luck with the tech issues, Joy.

Nina | 6069 comments We are expecting frost Saturday night but hopefully no skunks to go with it. My son lives in San Diego the home of the perfect weather; usually, but this week it hit 105 degrees.

message 7463: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Good luck Joy, such things are truly exsasparating..

message 7464: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments At least you don't have hedge balls. What a terrible nuisance they are.

message 7465: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Hedge balls = Osage orange, one of my favorite woods to turn when it is green. It is absolutely gorgeous, but extremely hard. Very much like Black locust, just an orange color where the locust is green. They are one of the few woods that I'll actually polish with 400 grit sandpaper. Just a bit of wax & they shine.

message 7466: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) COLD rain. It's 35 & wet. Shiver. No yard work for me today & I have a lot to do. On the plus side, maybe it will discourage & wash away whatever dead thing the dogs have been rolling in. Lily came in last night slimed again. Marg didn't smell it, but as soon as Lily got near me, I almost retched. Luckily, she's easy to wash in my shower stall.

message 7467: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Ugh! Lily & I went out front & I nipped into the shop to drop off my coffee while she made a quick tour around it. I came out to see her running back to the house. I asked her what was going on & then my nose told me - skunk! She'd caught it right in the face & mouth, too.

Oy! She got another shower & all is OK now, I think. Not sure as my nose has taken a vacation to hell...
:(

message 7468: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Not a fun time. Would smelling salts work?

message 7469: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The problem with skunk smell is how pervasive it is. Vicks helps a little, but for days the reek will haunt us, especially after we've been out of the house & step back into it. Wet skunked dog is the worst. The skunk smell is also around & in my shop, but I can't figure out exactly where it's coming from. Everywhere & nowhere. A haunting stink.
:(

message 7470: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Pip got skunked about an hour ago in our hay barn of all places. I think it happened just as he ducked into the barn & he got it full in the face. We're putting Visine in his eyes every half hour, but they're still weeping a lot.

I've put the trap in there baited with a dog biscuit & peanut butter. The kids didn't get the skunk under their garage last night & were hoping to have another go tonight, but protecting the hay is more important. When Pip got sprayed, the horses & goats who were 15 yards away outside the barn took off at a dead run for the opposite side of the field, so if any bales get sprayed, they won't eat them. Not only that, but I'll have to pull them out of the stack & toss them - a lot of work.

I've about had it with skunks. This is war.

message 7471: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Skunks! I only like to see them from a far far distance.

Sorry Pip is having eye issues form the skunk. Hopefully his eyes will clear up.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments There are flood and wind warnings in several counties - plus the Berkshires in MA and the NY Catskills and Adirondacks.

High Winds starting at 6pm tonight. Need to get our flashights etc nearby just in case.

Nina | 6069 comments Frustrating. Hard to live with these things but worse to live without them.

message 7475: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Hope all stays OK at your end. Linda, take care.

message 7476: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Power went out two times and for less than a minute each time. We were awoken at 3am when we heard branches falling on the roof. Then they sounded like branches rolling. Turns out just bunches and bunches of pine cones fell onto the roof.

Driveway only had twigs. We were spared!

message 7477: by Jim (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments A decent bowling night. First game under average by 5. Second game unfortunately got under 100. Decided I needed to get serious.

Third game got a Turkey - which is 3 strikes in a row - to get a final game of 178. Terrific.

My average is only 117 (should be 127 but didn't bowl on league last year just acted as a sub).

Now I know to concentrate concentrate concentrate

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments We had very light snowflurries in Omaha Nebraska last night. Very cold--25 degrees and windy.

I fear a cold and snowy winter this year.

message 7482: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Strange weather here; it was in the thirties early this morning and expected to be seventy on Sunday.

message 7483: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We have the same weather. Yesterday was weird. It was damp all day, no real accumulation, just drizzle now & then, about 50. Felt really cold, though. It was like that all day & when I went into the shop about 4pm. When I came out about 6:30pm, it felt a lot warmer. I thought the temp must have gone up into the 60s, but it was only 56. Very strange, but welcome.

It was still 56 when I left the house about 4:30am. The temp hadn't moved a lick, but still drizzles here & there. Feels warm.

Nina | 6069 comments Our oldest great grandson, Shanen, is a Junior at Fordham University NYC and often rollerblades down the bike track that was the scene of terror last week. We were all concerned about him until he let everyone know he was OK. His mother commented, "How do you keep your kids safe these days?" I don't know the answer.

message 7486: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Good-by to our proposed seventy degree weather tomorrow as of now it is supposed to be in the fifties. Glad I planted my tulip bulbs this afternoon.

message 7487: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We should have the 70 degree weather today & I hope to get all my clippings picked up & the lawn mowed a last time. I finally got the Rose of Sharon pruned so we can see back to the goats' pen & barn a little better. There's a lot more gardening to do, but it might not get done. I never did remember to prune the weigela this year. Too late now. I need to transplant & seed some of the bank gardens, too.

message 7488: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, we must have common likes in gardening because at the house we lived in for twenty eight years we had a favorite Weigela bush and several Rose of Sharon. I miss them.

message 7489: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Never heard of a Weigela bush. Love Rose of Sharon.
My dirt is too acid to grow much.

message 7490: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Weigela bushes are a lot like forsythia, except they have pink & white flowers. I almost lost one of mine to some sort of fungus 4 or 5 years ago when it was about 4 or 5 years old. I pruned 3/4 of it back to nubs & tore all the dead stuff out of it. Now it's as big as its brother again. Since I didn't prune either this year (Like forsythia, they should be pruned once the blooms die, although they bloom a few weeks later.) both are huge, probably 7' tall & over twice that in diameter. Hope we don't get any freezing rain or wet snow this year or they'll get torn up.

message 7491: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Thanks, Jim.

Yellow forsythia are one of the first signs of spring. Pink and white flowered Weigela bushes are probably very pretty.

message 7492: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Cold this morning. Only 24degrees. No wind which is good. Going from high 60's to under 30 degrees gave my sinuses a whirl. 6 days of a sore throat and sneezing. Yes, I'm complaining. Thought it was headed out last night and this morning seems like I'm starting all over. Oh well. That's my story for today.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments My husband stepped out to get some milk. Also came home with ice cream. Yippee. Should feel nice on my throat.

Nina | 6069 comments Try Camomile seems I spelled that wrong but anyway that tea helped me when I had your symptoms about ten days ago. Get well soon, hopefully.

message 7497: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, hope your computer days with trouble are behind you. I know the feeling. I got my DNA report yesterday and couldn't open it. I had to read it on my husband's computer and finally after an hour or so he finally got it up on my computer. These now are both working.. Yours and mine.

message 7498: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Linda, I too, was once feeling better and then not good again but I rested one day/not easy I know and finally started feeling better again. Hope that is how yours works.

message 7499: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Frustration; first I couldn't get my DNA and then my husband worked very long and sent my google account back into my old account and for some reason that meant I could download my DNA and then when I tried to get into Goodreads, Facebook etc I had to sign up all over again but they let me. Then I got to my gmail account and they wouldn't let me do it until I did my password. Unfortunately I had accidentally thrown out the page with all my passwords. Yes, stupid. So was a big hassle so he finally got my gmail account and then we were worried we'd not be able to get back into my DNA but we finally did. Now time for bed. I can't face my computer any longer.

message 7500: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Sorry to read about computer woes. They're frustrating. I know.

Sorry to read that you're sick, Linda. It's been cold here too, but we've been bouncing up & down. A couple of mornings were well below freezing (25?) & today it suddenly bounced up to 50. It's tough to dress for.
