Joy, Jim, Linda, and Nina,I'm very interested in taking a trip to see one of the settings to my book, and that is Glens Falls. I would like to combine it with seeing Fall color. It is my understanding that the best color is in early October. Is that correct? I was wondering if any of you would be willing to guide me to see the many sights that I mentioned in my book. Any takers?
Jake, yes the fall colors are great. I am not be interested in serving as a guide but perhaps the Chamber of Commerce would be of help.
Joy, Thanks for responding. I'll remember, I hope, to give the Chamber a try. For your information, I placed my question 3 times because it seemed as though the first two hadn't gone through. Have a wonderful 4th.

Late September early October is a good time for fall foliage. Downtown Glens Falls - Glen Street you will find nice shops, Wood Theatre, Crandall Library, Hyde Collection and more. Be sure and stop and see Lake George - both east and west sides and the tourist area with a tour on one of the tour boats for a good informative foliage tour.
I agree with Joy - contact the Chamber of Commerce for Glens Falls and Lake George.

Linda, Thank you. I also would like to see some old historic buildings. It was my understanding that there was a blacksmith shop, a beautiful church with a wall of stained glass, the old paper company building near the feeder canal, and the Civil War monument. Of course I want to see the falls and I also want to visit the cemetery and peruse some of the old gravestones. Would you know if the museum does any living history portrayals in the cemetery? Also, the cave from Last of the Mohicans and Forts Henry and Edward if they still exist.
Your setting sounds so lovely and interesting Joy and I can barely imagine it as I did go up the Hudson River all the way to Canada and have been about the state of NY even though not specifically at Glen Falls. I thought your pictures I've seen of your surroundings were beautiful. Have a nice summer enjoying them..

Finch Pruyn is the paper mill in Glens Falls. You want to see Coopers Cave which is across the bridge in Glens Falls.
Fort William Henry (a beautiful hotel with Fort and more) is on Route 9 heading north, in the Village of Lake George.
I do not know if the museum does any living history portrayals.
Today is lovely so far. Quite cool. Being home more I've had the opportunity to witness Red Bellied Woodpecker feeding 2 babies and the Down Woodpecker doing the same. Because of this, we put out suet. One cake was gone in less than 2 days. Once the baby feeding stops we will also stop putting out the suet. For now, I'm enjoying nature.
Oh, want to mention that my book reading is coming along slowly. My head's been buried in things to do in my area (farmer's markets, free music shows at night, fireworks dates and times). Also have a magazine on Finger Lakes Wine Country. I don't particularly like to go to wine tastings; only gone to 2 over the last several years. Didn't find it enjoyable but could have been the venue.
Of interest - found a soaring museum in Elmira and a aviation museum in Hammondsport. I like going to the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge in Seneca Falls which is along the way.
Next, planning a trip to Maine near Kennenbunkport, Wells, and Ogunquit. Need to research more before looking for accommodations. Love sitting by the water relaxing and eating fish. Yum yum. Anyone been to this area?

That's neat! We put out suet cakes because the can they're in leaked & they started to mold, but the raccoon stole the whole feeder & cake. Also broke my biggest tree lily. We usually don't feed them in the summer because they melt, anyway. Marg has been putting out a different kind of seed cake with less fat in it. The woodpeckers love it, too. The one on the front porch is gone in a couple of days. Seems to always have one on it.
Years ago our hummingbird feeders would "disappear" in the middle of the night only to find the feeder at the edge of the yard just before the woods. We ended up bringing in the hummingbird feeders around 9pm and put them back out at 5am. No raccoons bothering the feeders yet this year. Yes, the suet cakes can melt. Not hot enough yet. Once the baby feeding stops we will stop putting out the suet cakes. For now, we will continue to enjoy watching the parents feed their babies!

I ma being lazy--the joys of being retired. Iam staying in the house all the rest of today and tomorrow. Seriously,v the projected high for today is99 degrees in Omaha! I do what must be done before noon if possible and stay in as the heat builds. Since I do not drive, it is MUCH too hot to think of walking!

Mary JL - it's a beauty of a day here - 75 degrees, dry and sunny. I myself stay indoors noon to about 3 unless I can find shade. I would stay indoors at 99 degrees.
Be sure and stay hydrated. Watermelon is good for a hot day.

Not a beautiful day here/upper nineties. HOT. and I've been to three grocery stores. I am having jello tonight with peaches and bananas and whipped cream along with leftovers. Remember the saying "There's always room for jello."

We're just in the low 90s, but the humidity is high & the sun is super bright, so it's just awful out. Any work makes me sweat buckets. Ugh. I should be cleaning the house since Mom is coming next week. I did fix some flooring tonight, but didn't get to vacuuming.

Stand on her tippy toes and swipe her hand on the top of the refrigerator. First time this happened Mom had dust on her hands. Never again, though!
Rainy rainy day today. Cool in the high 60's. A nice relief after the 90's of yesterday. Planned on staining our Adirondack Chairs today - will have to wait for a non rainy day (left the chairs out in the elements yesterday).

Super! Let's hope. They say the heat index is around 100 degrees. Sure feels like it.
A funny morning. Got up & Pip did, too. He went out & started barking to beat the band, so I ran to the back door, turned on the light, & grabbed the handheld flood light. Between the canopy & the hibiscus which are huge, I couldn't see well, so I moved over toward the back steps & something flew by my head. It didn't go inside, did it?I looked around, but Pip had stopped barking so I guess whatever critter got away. Came back in the house & looked around. Didn't see anything at first, so I walked over to my coffee maker & poured a cup. Heard something above me & looked up to see a wren was perched on top of the cabinets. It flew into the living room.
I got my butterfly net, closed my bedroom door & thought about closing Marg's, but decided I'd definitely wake her up. James was asleep in the guest room with the door closed, so I proceeded hunt the wren with the net. The third time the wren flew away from the kitchen cabinets, I managed to get it. I released it outside after closing the door fully. It glared at me for a couple of seconds & flew off into the night.
Marg was up by then sniggering at me. She said the sight of me prancing back & forth swinging the net & muttering curses was too funny to sleep through. Then she went back to bed since it wasn't 5am yet. I have to say that wren's are even better than coffee for waking a person up, though.

Poor little wren. Glad you caught him.
I prefer coffee to chasing a wren around my kitchen for waking me up in the morning.

Tell Marge, it brought perhaps not a laugh to me but a smile. And yes, my daughter has had skunked dogs and they are no fun and we once had a raccoon in our fireplace mantle looking straight at the chimney sweep.
I picked Mom up at the airport yesterday leaving work about 45 minutes early. I really like the ability to see the flight info. The flight was about 45 minutes late, but I was able to see that & leave work accordingly. I waited about 3 minutes for her to come out of the terminal.We got home about 3pm, barely got settled in when Brando & family showed up a little after 4pm. They brought their dog, a big Lab named Tech (a joke), & things got chaotic. Mom & I made up Garden Lasagna - basically lasagna made with zucchini instead of pasta. It's quick, easy, & fed the crew well. Colin sat in the high chair my great grandfather made at the table. The chair is 120 years old now.
Then we went out & Colin got worn out having fun meeting goats, horses, & taking a tractor ride. I let him drive for a while but he's not a very good driver yet. 3.5 years old & still hasn't figured out how to steer a tractor. Maybe some day.

I love the idea of a 120 year old high chair. I doubt any made now will last that long.
Just got back from a mini vacation to Elmira (National Soaring Museum) and Hammondsport (Curtiss Aviation Museum).Both were very good.

To take a flight on the soaring museum costs $96.00. We chose to watch instead of partake. Someday, maybe.
We were in the Finger Lakes area - nice ride through farms and open scenery. Drove by Lake Keuka and Seneca Lake.

Anyone know if there are any B&Bs open for business in Glens Falls? I'm ideally looking for one in a Victorian home. The one l find online doesn't answer my calls or emails.
When Jim mentioned his mother looking to see if the refrigerator top was clean it got me thinking and not only did I scrub the top of the fridge I, today, washed down forty kitchen cabinet doors and twenty drawers and five pantry doors besides cleaning many kitchen shutters on windows. Next week I'll clean off all the refrigerator shelves. See what you started Jim?
That's very ambitious Nina. Today, after going for a short ride to a local lake up north, I was good for nothing. Sinus headache. All plans of any cleaning, sorting, etc. went to H_ _ _ !!

Woke up feeling fine! Thanks for the good wishes. So hate being useless. Can't even read!! Raining. Low humidity today. Thank goodness. Doing housework this morning. Afternoon for doing some crafts.
