Jim (jimmaclachlan) All good ideas, Joy. Thanks. Yes, I could build any of them, but I think I'll use bits here & there for my own design. Thanks!

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Bought a new but classified as used Subaru 2017. Dealer car with 7,000 miles. Got a good price on car. Said goodbye to the 2008 which we bought at same dealership in 2012. Color: white. Outback. Nice!

On way home we stopped at the Ausable Marsh to see if we could spot an eagle or 2. None out.

We sat in car for a few minutes just looking at Lake Champlain. Took my eyes off the lake for a bit then looked again and saw something large and brown. Fred, what is that over there? He said looks like a dog. We both tried to focus - the animal was sort of bent over and we couldn't really tell.

Then, it flapped it's large tail while it's small hands went up to it's face. A beaver. A very very large beaver. We almost couldn't believe our eyes.

Fred took the camera and stepped outside of the car to take a picture (we got home and they didn't come out too great as something was amiss with the focus on the extended lens).

I've always thought as beavers as small, like the size of a groundhog. Not this beaver. He was huge. Looked up the weight and they range from 45 pounds and have found some up to 95 pounds. Think "our" beaver had to be at least 95 pounds. Huge old beaver. What a sight!

While camping years ago we saw beavers in the water. Yes, they are large! You can hear them when they flap their broad tails on the water.

Super on the car. It's so nice to get that done.

Great seeing the beaver, too. We used to have them around our place & they were tough to see. The closest we'd ever get to them was when they'd swim under us as we went past in a canoe. I think ours were on the smaller end of the scale, but it's tough to tell looking down through the water.

message 6658: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Every time we visit the marsh there is usually something new to see!

Think I'd be scared to see a huge beaver while I'm canoeing! We've seen minx, otter and small beaver. Glad I was on land with this sighting!

Nina | 6069 comments Monday night when our power went out I was in bed reading my story on Kindle by flashlight not knowing there were three tornadoes circling overhead and headed to towns either a few miles away or within twenty miles where one place had damage to five hundred homes and six hundred houses leveled at another and nearby forty three houses damage. Lots of damage to a county airport etc. I will never complain about reading by flashlight again.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Windy last night and again this morning.

Went to drs the other day for a foot issue. Happy to report I had a good blood pressure reading of 116/70. The last 2 years while my Mom was ill and husband had an issue my blood pressure was over 135. Drs were considering putting me on blood pressure medicines.

Time and relaxation solved this one I'm happy to say!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We had a gorgeous day yesterday once it warmed up from a cold morning. Looks like another nice one today, too. Supposed to be a crappy weekend, though. Not sure what we're going to get but it will be cold enough that it could go either way. I don't think an ice storm is on the list though, thankfully.

I took a ride on Chip. He was pokey as could be. Josh & the dogs walked alongside us most of the way. Things got interesting in the woods. There's a dip I generally let him canter down & then up the long hill on the other side, but I wanted to go slow. Josh ran down behind him & the dogs startled him from the other side so we wound up doing some interesting dancing & sliding around until I let him go. He then galloped up the hill. Several times he peeled out on the wet ground. It was fun.

Josh & his dogs left us at the top since that's right next to their house. He was calm, but not as pokey since we were heading back to the barn. As usual, I let the reins go & he walked right up to the mounting block. I started to swing my leg over as he stepped alongside & he stepped on a rock, almost going down on his nose. My foot hit the corner of the mounting block so it flipped & I wound up doing a header into the hard, gravelled ground. Sheesh! My shoulder is a bit sore today, but nothing major. Dumb.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I used some scraps to make a book holder last night - a test for making one for Mom. I tested it on half a dozen books & I think it will work pretty well. The test one doesn't fold up as well as I'd like, although it holds a variety of books better than I think most of those I found online will. At least she generally reads hardback books. Trying to make something work for paperbacks too would be really tough.

I'm making something like this

One problem is that books vary so much in thickness & new ones are very difficult to manage at the very beginning & end when there are just a few pages open. They really want to close. There's a huge variance between a thin, new hardback & an old, thick one. Long, thin page holders hinged on the outer edges of the shelf work far better than if hinged on the inside. Turning them up vertically along the margin of the page holds them open & yet allows changing them with one hand.

The main issue I'm having is folding the holder up into something flat like a book. If I make the back brace low enough that it can lay out until a book is almost flat, the balance can be precarious with a large, heavy book. If high enough, the piece it catches on gets too long. It's a tough balance to find. I'm going to buy a 3/16" brass rod tonight to bend into the back brace & that should do the trick.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I'm sure that, with your ingenuity, your book holder will be a very good one.

The Girl with Seven Names: A North Korean Defector’s Story by Hyeonseo Lee

I have that book in my Kindle library. I bought it for $1.99. Haven't read it yet.

It could've been a lot worse. Very awkward, made more so by the mounting block. I sure hope you meant NOT more sore!
;)

message 6676: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, that was an accidental omission. But, maybe he can get a laugh out of it. Regardless of your politics after reading half way through the North Korean story you have to be grateful for not being born there.

Nina | 6069 comments We're having one of those bad days but could have been worse here. Last night my son in law was in the bathroom at three in the morning when he passed out and fell to the floor/he regained and stood up and fell again hitting his head on the sink and finally struggled back to bed and was in such pain he told my daughter to call 911. It seems his blood pressure dropped almost to zero and his rib was fractured and punctured his lung. My daughter just called and they decided that he has pneumonia and that is why he passed out as he couldn't breathe for a spell and they said if he had remained on the floor rather than falling and hurting himself so she had to call 911 he would probably have died. Otherwise nine one one got to their house in three minutes and began immediately giving him oxygen and something for pain and got his blood pressure up and now he's in the hospital and alive..

Nina | 6069 comments He's under oxygen and his daughter, our granddaughter is a nurse and she is at that hospital and now is in her own office and in charge of all patients records and so can leave her post and she is checking on him all the time. She was even able as far as she was concerned to get the best dr. It seems that he was fortunate that he fell and hurt himself enough that my daughter had to call 911 and as soon as they got there/in three minutes/ they started the oxygen as they now know he had pneumonia and dr told my daughter that if he had stayed in the bathroom he would probably have died as his blood pressure when the ambulance guys got there was almost non existent. So now they are keeping a close watch and doing x-rays of his punctured lung. All the update for tonight. Thanks for caring. nina

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Nina, an ordeal for your daughter and her husband. My neighbor fell backwards when doing the dishes. Seems her blood pressure dropped. Luckily she didn't hurt her head. They never found out why she fell all was OK but did have her check her blood pressure quite often.

Try not to worry too much about them. Say a prayer and keep occupied. That's the hardest part - waiting. Lucky to have a granddaughter who is a nurse and can deliver you information.

Impressive ambulance arrival time - 3 minutes! Bravo for them.

I'll say some prayers. Sending hugs to you.

message 6692: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks. They found out he has pneumonia and if the paramedics hadn't arrived when they did he would have died. He passed out because of a lack of oxygen due to pneumonia. It was a blessing in disguise that he was hurt so bad from the two falls that my daughter called 911. He is now on oxygen in the hospital and they are x-raying his lungs to be sure the puncture hasn't gotten larger..I'll keep you informed.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I spent the morning doing my taxes with tax software for the first time in years. I never used to since I had a tax guy who wasn't much more expensive than the software which made it a lot easier. I'd drop the papers off with him then drop by a week later to sign & give him a check. He's getting up there, so he sold out to H&R Block & the rates doubled. That's just too much. I have to say tax software has come a long way since I last used it over a decade ago. Very easy. Only took me a couple of hours & I'm sure it will be a lot less than than next year.

Last year we had the volunteers at our senior citizen center do our taxes. We plan to do the same this year... already have an appointment. Eddie used to do it himself but he now has vision issues.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's cold this morning. Down to 20 & I forgot to cover the peonies last night. We went out to dinner & a movie, saw "Logan". It was pretty good, but we didn't get home until after 10pm. Late for me since I'm usually asleep by then at the latest since I get up at 4-5am. With springing forward on top of it, my clock is a mess.

I hate DST. I get up early anyway & living on the western edge of the time zone compounds the problem. Marg hates it, too. Just when she's getting some light on her morning bus route, it's snatched away. It's such a dumb idea. The only people that seem to like it live in cities where they don't really need to worry about it since they have artificial lights all over.

It always takes a while getting the animals to adjust to the new time. At least we don't have dairy cows. They can be very fussy about time changes, but even the horses can be tough to deal with. They're ready to come in for feeding at certain times & getting them in early is a PITA. Late usually isn't so bad, although they can be pests then. They'll hang around & kick at the gate to tell us it's past time for their feed & tease the dogs.

However, since my Mom passed last year, I brought her tax stuff to an accountant.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments We got up late this morning as we stayed up late to watch a movie.

Got up at 6:54 but the clocks showed the DST of 7:54. I did change the bedroom clocks before we went to bed.

Sun was shining brightly through the windows and skylights. Cold today. Only 7 degrees. Not sure what we will do today.

Did buy corn beef and cabbage. Add to that some carrots and potatoes. Rye bread and butter. Yum Yum. Maybe I'll read later. Do some Adult Coloring.

Has anyone tried the Adult Coloring books? Very relaxing once you get into it! I have crayons, colored pencils and just recently bought some gel pens. Some of the gel pens are sparkly. This made the coloring relaxing and fun.

message 6699: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Linda, my wife & daughter like the adult coloring books. Marg bought them both horse ones for Xmas. I got Marg a watercolor pencil set to use with hers, but I think she prefers a set of markers. The paper isn't quite right for watercolors. She likes the idea, though. They're like colored pencils, but a bit of water makes them blend like water colors. Anyway, I've never seen so many psychedelic horses!

We're having corn beef, cabbage, & red potatoes next Saturday night to celebrate my birthday which is the day before. For obvious reasons, it's a tradition. My aunt does it also. She's 20 years older than me to the day.

Glad we're not as cold as you. Hope we don't get much snow on Tuesday. Right now they're not calling for much & it shouldn't stick around since the days next week are all supposed to be above freezing.

Nina | 6069 comments Cold here today and had a smattering of snow yesterday and no sign of it today. Bunch of huge bluejays at the feeder this morning. Water frozen in the bird bath so I'll take some hot kettle water out later to thaw it out. I have been given adult coloring books this past year but too busy to do it yet. Still writing memoirs/this time my parents lives and so wish I had asked more. Too late are two sad words. Making navy bean soup and cornbread to eat on this cold afternoon. I have eaten that combination most of my life.
