OPEN HOUSE
We just shake hands at meeting
With many that come nigh,
We nod the head in greeting
To many that go by;
But welcome thru the gateway
Our few old friends and true;
Our hearts leap up and straightway
There's open house for you, old friend,
There's open house for you.

Here's a pic of the poem in a frame. I found it on E-Bay:
CLICK ON THUMBNAIL.I originally saw the poem in a frame at a friend's house over 10 or 15 years ago. The link under the poem leads to "The Bay View Magazine" published in 1914!
I LOVE that poem! It manages to say so much.
Marg was going to a show today when her truck threw a shoe. (OK, it was a front wheel bearing that went out, but I thought that sounded better.) Luckily, she only got about 10 miles away when it did it, but she had to keep going another couple of miles before she could stop at a church parking lot. Not only was it the first place to turn around, but it was the first one that had a cell phone signal. It's over 90, so she was stuck. Our trailer is a 5th wheel, so she was desperately calling around to see who could tow it home when I got there. It took her a while to get me since I was out spraying the fields & had just come in for lunch & a well deserved drink. I just drove it home at about 15mph the whole way while she followed in my truck. My next door neighbor says he'll fix it tomorrow.
Jim wrote: "Marg was going to a show today when her truck threw a shoe. (OK, it was a front wheel bearing that went out, but I thought that sounded better.) Hope the truck can be fixed with no problem. Not a good day for Marg!
One time (before cell phones) Ed and I were each driving two different cars through an area of NY we were unfamiliar with. It was in the sticks, a rural area. We were keeping contact via some sort of radio device he had. Well, we lost track of one another and he drove on ahead, out of radio range. I didn't know where I was so I just sat in a closed gas station until Ed drove around and got into radio range. I had to describe where I was and he finally found me. It was dark and lonely.
As I look back, I'm glad he retraced his steps and didn't just keep driving. I don't know what I would have done. I wouldn't want to go through that again!
Another time we were in two cars and one broke down. We were in the midst of moving to our retirement home from downstate to upstate. I left Ed on side of the parkway (on the grass) in the broken-down car and I had to search through the country-side for a repair station with a spare part which Ed knew he needed to fix the car. I found a gas station which had the spare part. The owner dug it out of a box of junk. He gave it to me free as a retirement gift. There are some really nice people out there! Besides, I probably looked very forlorn and upset. It was so stressful.
I forget that 'show' can have other meanings, but it is always a horse show in this household. She was taking Cutter down to Lakeside Arena. Yes, Marg was pretty stressed out, especially since she couldn't get a hold of me. I don't carry my cell phone on me while working around the farm as I don't want to talk to anyone & am afraid I'll break or lose it. I had just sat down when she called & I said, "Good timing, I just got in."
She practically growled, "I've been calling a LOT!"
I'm still not going to carry my cell phone. I'm on call 24x7 & have been for over 15 years. For the past 5 years, it hasn't been bad since the company I work for is small & very laid back, but the decade before that had enough calls to last me & Marg a lifetime. We'd have plans for the day & she'd wake up to a note that said I had to run into the office at 4am on a Sunday & would be gone all day. Another time I got a call at 6pm, just a few hours after I got home from work, & wound up not getting home until noon the next day.
So there are times when I'm just not available except by leaving a message. I generally check every couple of hours, which is often enough, IMO. The world isn't going to end in a couple of hours, but my sanity might.
;-)
I figured it was a horse show! :)Sounds like you're "on call" like a doctor!
Now I know why we can never get through to our son directly. He too is on call for the same reason.
All his calls go to his voice messages.
Many IT people are on call all the time, Joy. My son seems to rarely stop working. Personally, I want to know if there is a network issue, otherwise leave me alone. I figure I'm customer service. It's my job to make sure everyone else can work & make money to pay me, but if a printer jams, that is not the end of the world. Send me an email & print to another one.
Jim wrote: "Many IT people are on call all the time, Joy. My son seems to rarely stop working. Personally, I want to know if there is a network issue, otherwise leave me alone. I figure I'm customer service..."There must be some annoying frustrations in that vein, Jim.
Our son gets calls even while he's on vacation. Thank goodness they can get cell phone calls nowadays even while camping on the islands (if they're in a good spot for reception).

Glad you liked the poem, Nina. It's one of my favorites about friends.
We're going to print the picture and frame it for ourselves.
Walmart has some nice small frames.
I often frame my favorite quotes in mini-frames. They're part of my "clutter". :)
Just posted a book review on Amazon that they requested me to do. "The Crossroads Cafe," by Deborah Smith. Not the best book I have read but it was different and entertaining.

Mike wrote: "Today I'm going to school, coming home, chores, xbox, reading, writing, reading, maybe more xbox, or more writing"Mike, perhaps you might post a sample of your writing at your Goodreads writing area. You'll find it under the "Explore" tab at the top of the page. See "Creative Writing/my writing".
Or something like that. :)
Please let us know when you post a sample at your Goodreads area described above. Thanks.
Yes, I 'd be interested to read what you write when you're ready to share, Mike.I just proofread for a friend. Only one correction. Nice.
Now I want to enjoy the day, take the dog out, read, whatever. I've declared it a free day and I will do no cleaning. At all.
Yea, I probably will do that later. Thank you, Joy H. for telling me how to put it on here, because I did not know

Well, Mike, you sure know how to put the hook in! Now you've got me curious... :)
I'm so glad that you were able to post the sample. Little by little we learn to navigate Goodreads. :) Takes time.
Mike, I see it's he summary of the back cover. I'm assuming this book will be in print soon? Once it's been published, you can set up a goodreads author page to get more interest in your work.I'd like to read this book if it's in hardcopy format. Can you let me know when it's published?
Thanks, all. I came home, ate, then went to sleep for almost 4 hours in the middle day. I guess I do have a cold or something. No yard work, it's too wet & chilly. The temp is around 60, I think. That feels really cold after the 90's last week.

I believe in sleep. :)

This cold is still kicking my butt. I did very little today. Only mowed half the lawn before getting tuckered. I do need to get some small trees off the fence tomorrow morning. Erin is going to help. She wants to learn to use a chainsaw, anyway. Should be interesting.;-)
When my chidren were young and had various cold and flu like symptons, our pediatrician whom I trusted implicitly said the acid in the oranges worked against the get well forces trying to get you better. So it was 7-up and lots of crushed ice. By the way, someone a few years ago told my husband to take Elderberry extract a teaspoon in milk every day and you would avoid colds. so far it has worked. Strangely, where we are able to get it is at the KU store that sells University of Kansas souvineers. If you are interested look on Google for it. Hope something works; hard to be miserable.
Found this about Elderberry:http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplem...

Interesting.
I don't get colds often & they're a virus, so there's nothing for it but to let them run their course & not to over-do in the meantime. I have a lot on the list that has to be done, but will pace myself. The fence line has to be cleared, the lawn mowed, & the fish pond pump fixed. Anything after that is gravy. I'm feeling better this morning. Thanks all.
The fence line is cleared & we got four new rails for the jumps out of it. Erin did good on the chainsaw.
Sometime today (a few hours from now) my husband and I are going to be re-arranging our computer connections. So if I'm AWOL for a short time, that will be why.
The re-arrangement of connections will probably take only a few hours, if we're lucky.
If we're not lucky, carry on! :)
I hope to be online as ASAP.
Mom used to make the best Elderberry jelly. I have some bushes that try to grow here, but it usually gets too dry every summer & they die before the fruit ripens.I meant we cut all the trees off the fence line, Joy. It's now clear of debris.
As you can see, I'm back. No problem re-connecting, thank goodness.Does the fence line mean there's a fence there? Silly question, but why would there be trees along a fence? I'm just trying to picture it. Maybe fence line means simply a borderline?
Nina wrote: "So far it seems to help my husband avoid colds in the winter."Nina, that reminds me of the story that goes something like this: "They've figured out a way to keep elephants out of the Grand Canyon. It must be working because there aren't any elephants in the Grand Canyon. LOL
Yes, there is a fence with a cleared area on both sides going through the woods. A bunch of small trees blew down across it, so they needed to be cut off it - cleared. The fence & the fence line (area around the fence) need to be kept clear. If you don't, you can't get in to fix it if the fence gets broken. Also, vines & such will drag a fence down just through their weight. They'll rot or rust it, too.
Joy, He used to get a terrible cold each winter after Christmas and for the past several years he has had ony one and he was run down a bit so his immune system was not what he should have been. It is also supposed to help lower blood sugar for diabetics. He hasn't seen any improvement in that area since taking it. For a couple of years the place where he bought it didn't carry it any longer and during that time the colds returned. so who knows but so far so good.
Jim wrote: "Yes, there is a fence with a cleared area on both sides going through the woods. A bunch of small trees blew down across it, so they needed to be cut off it - cleared. The fence & the fence line ..."Ah, I see. Thanks, Jim. I don't have much experience with fences. :) Also, I didn't realize that trees had blown down across the fence.
Why is the fence there? Is it your property line?
Nina wrote: "... For a couple of years the place where he bought it didn't carry it any longer and during that time the colds returned. ..."I see. That makes more sense then, Nina. Hope he stays well.
The fence is there to keep the animals in, just like all of them. We don't have any decorative fences. It's close to the property line, about 10' my side of it. I generally like fences closer than that, but there's a small pond that the property line splits just north of there & we kept the fence on my side of the pond.
Jim, I'm glad you're feeling better! On the question of orange juice (and other citrus fruits/juices) for colds, I have a different opinion than Nina's doctor --though he'd undoubtedly point out that he has an M.D. degree and I don't! :-) Vitamin C is an acid, but there's a fair body of scientific opinion that suggests that it helps, rather than hinders, the body in fighting colds and other illnesses. My experience with using it to fight colds has been pretty positive.I felt queasy and feverish most of the day yesterday myself --Deborah had a bad siege of the same thing on Sunday, so Barb and I both apparently caught it from her. But it seems to be one of those 24-hour bugs; I'd already arranged, last night, to take a sick day today, but my fever had broken by morning and I've felt pretty well today. And my Internet connection, which was down all day, is now back up and running! Hooray!
Glad you're feeling better, Werner. Personally, I think most of the cold remedies help mentally more than physically. Over the years I've had people swear vitamin C, zinc, echanasia (sp?) & all manner of nifty things fixed them up. I've tried a few & never thought anything helped more than some rest & staying hydrated. I have to say that a glass of orange juice does go down well when I'm feeling bad, but so does hot tea, with or without lemon. More often, I just drink water, though.
I had a GREAT ride on Chip tonight. Took him out bareback & jumped 4 or 5 fences - one was 2'6", not huge, but pretty good for the two of us without a saddle. He cantered over them all & the we went into the pond. Boy, does he ever like that! He walked right in & beat the water up with his front hooves, slapping at it like crazy & then stopped for a bit to blow bubbles. I'll have to get pictures next time. Unfortunately, the pond is getting low or I'd take him swimming.

In the movie, "True Women" there's a scene with a horse swimming across the river/stream to bring a rope to the other side so that a raft-ferry could be set up. He had a rider on his back. The rider slid off into the water and went under for a while. The horse kept swimming. Interesting scene. I guess horses can swim just like dogs can. :)
Werner wrote: "... I felt queasy and feverish most of the day yesterday myself ... I've felt pretty well today. And my Internet connection, which was down all day, is now back up and running! Hooray! ..."Werner, all in all, it wasn't a good day for you. :) Glad things have improved.
