Nina | 6069 comments It's lovely. Who's it for? Next on your list; sweaters for the Jack Russells? nina

message 1602: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Jim, the only reason I thought of camo-color was because soon as I saw it, it looked like something Eric's grandfather would wear while hunting.

message 1603: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Nina, I don't know who it is for. I'm starting another one tonight. I might send it up with my son for his girl friend or my mother. I don't know if Mom wears a scarf, though. I don't.

Erin said it would be nice if I gave it to her, but I just taught her to knit, so she can make her own. She said that is a mean way of looking at it. I pointed out that I was her father & it's part of the job description - make children self-sufficient & be mean enough to drive them out on their own. She thinks I have it down pat.
;-)

You're perfectly right with the colors, Jackie. The only people I know that hunt are a few macho guy friends who would probably think I was queer if I gave them a scarf I knitted, though.
;-)

message 1604: by Werner (new)

Werner Looks great, Jim; good job! Thanks for sharing the picture.

message 1605: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Werner.

I bust out laughing when I read that, Jim.

message 1608: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Totten (katherine42) | 199 comments I'm impressed.

message 1609: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thank you, Katherine.

Does anyone else here knit or crochet? It's really not that hard (at least not on the SIMPLE level that I'm at) & a wonderful way to keep your hands busy. Costs about $3 for a ball of yarn, the same for standard needles, so it's a very cheap way to stay busy.

message 1610: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Totten (katherine42) | 199 comments I personally don't have the mind set to knit, crochet, embrodier, etc. I had a hard time making pot holders in Girl Scouts! When my best friend in grade school started knitting, I did try. Couldn't stand it when I had to rip out all the stitches. My friend now makes sweaters and socks from shearing the sheep to the finished product.
I guess when I'm not cooking, my hands are most active holding a book. But I still get to wear the socks my friend knits.

message 1611: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Your comment about chasing the kids out on their own brought a smile. You sound like a softie underneath the grim knitter. nina ps I wrote the wrong title the other day, "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo," not, the girl with the Golden tatoo. It starts out good. Has anybody out there read it? nina

message 1612: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Actually, I threw my youngest boy out of the house & was putting all his stuff on the side of the road when my wife asked me to put it in the back of the truck. That was closer, so I did. The oldest one took off as soon as he could & neither has a room any more. The girl still has a room, but has an apartment at college with her boyfriend.

I am a softie, but I don't believe in ruining my kids by being one to them. They all had to learn skills & do chores. All of them can sew a button back on, iron their clothes, cook basic meals & clean well. Whether they do or not now is their business.

Today started out very poorly. Son James, the eldest, forgot his license at our house. He's a brilliant child, but could lose his butt if it wasn't attached. So, I had to drive past work & into Louisville to pick him up & get him to the airport on time. It's pouring rain & I no sooner got on to the highway than I got stuck in traffic due to an accident for 20 minutes. The fish we had for dinner last night was screaming to get out, too. Ugh.

The day should get better though. Few people are here & there isn't much on my plate. I may take a half day.

message 1613: by Werner (new)

Werner Jim, hope your day does improve! Hang in there.

Nina, most of us probably figured that "golden" in your earlier post was just a typo (I did). I haven't read the book or seen the movie myself, and from what I've read about them, don't want to. Lisbet sounds, in some ways, like a type of heroine I can readily respect and admire; but I think Larsson emphasizes graphic sexual abuse way beyond what I could stand reading or seeing.

Nina | 6069 comments I saw a pleasant movie last night; great acting with Joan Ploughright as main character. Set in London.
"Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont." I once saw Joan Ploughright in a play on the London stage. when she came out before uttering a word, the audience gave her a standing ovation. nina

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Sounds like a good one, Nina. I've put it on my Netflix queue.
"Mrs Palfrey at The Claremont" (2005)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421229/
"All but abandoned by her family in a London retirement hotel, an elderly woman strikes up a curious friendship with a young writer."

In 1993, Joan Plowright won a Golden Globe award for "Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture" [for: "Enchanted April" (1992) (also for: "Stalin" (1992) (TV)].

Below is Plowright's award page at IMDb:

At IMDb, I found this interesting bit of trivia:
Personal Quotes: "I have always resented the comments that it was I who was the homewrecker of Larry's marriage to Vivien Leigh. Danny Kaye was attached to Larry far earlier than I."
Bio: Spouse - Laurence Olivier (1961-1989) (his death) 3 children

Excerpt:
"Joan Ann Plowright, Lady Olivier, DBE (born 1929), better known as Dame Joan Plowright, is an English actress. She is best known for her role as Mrs. Fisher in Enchanted April for which she won a Golden Globe and received an Academy Award nomination. Nina | 6069 comments Thanks, Joy, for all the info on Joan P. I printed out the movies she played in and thought I would check some out for Netflix. I, too, didn't know she was married to Laurence Olivier. nina

message 1617: by Werner (new)

Werner Nina, re The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, several of my Goodreads friends liked it (and most of those that did gave it four or five stars). So I didn't mean for my comment above to sound dismissive or critical (and I hope it didn't!). Diverse tastes add a lot of the fun to Goodreads; so just because I doubt if a book would be my cup of tea doesn't mean it shouldn't be yours. (After all, we all know that in some areas, I'm a bit of a wuss. :-) )

message 1618: by Mary JL (new)

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments Today, I am confined to the house. By the weather, of course!

Yesterday, we had 62 degrees. Right now we have 18degrees, with wind. Also, earlier snow, freezing rain AND sleet.

Some people will probably go out tonight for New Year's Eve. You will not catch me out after dark with so much ice--not the way people drive around here.

Fortunately, I have quite a bit of Stephen King's "Under The Dome" to finish, so tonight will be a nice long reading binge!

To all in the group--have a Happy and Safe New Year!

message 1619: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Totten (katherine42) | 199 comments John and I will go out for an early dinner, then come home and watch the New Year fireworks from our window. They are easily visable from downtown Saratoga since the winter trees are leafless.
Tomorrow we go to the convent. My husband's sister is a Sister and we usually have New Years Day dinner with her. The staff puts on two meals: a brunch on one side of the diningroom, and a dinner on the other side. Lovely meal, lovely time.

Happy New Year to all!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Greetings! Wishing a happy and healthy 2011 to all!

message 1621: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments This day started with a Bang rather then ending with one; loud thunder, lightening and rain on the roof and skylight. Now, lots of bright sun but a cold wind coming tonight. In the meantime, I wish my friends at Goodreads a Happy New Year along with lots of good reading in 2011 nina

message 1622: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We hit 62 today!!! I'm going out with the dogs for a walk in the woods.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We have 37.4 degrees at 4:56 PM. At least it's above freezing for a change!

message 1624: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Pride goeth before a fall. We enjoyed our 60 degrees yesterday and tonight it will fall to nine degrees. Brrr. Poor birds, nina

message 1625: by Nina (last edited Dec 31, 2010 04:31PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Instead of out celebrating I will be in Sweden under my covers withThe Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. And NOT with the author, Stieg Larsson, who is probably in heaven. nina

message 1626: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Happy New Year, everyone.

message 1627: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Our temperature is falling, too. I'm off to bed if I can shift the girls around enough to give me room Molly, Lily & Amber are all piled together. Seems almost a shame to disturb them.

We (Marg, Erin & I) played a few games of dominoes tonight. That's fun. We manage to get laughing at each other often. Nice way to spend an evening. I'll see you all next year...

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Just got home from our local Wood Theater where we enjoyed a wonderful New Year's Eve musical variety show with the talented Laura Roth:
"Laura Roth's Family New Years Eve"
http://woodtheater.tix.com/Event.asp?...
"Spend New Year's Eve with the great star of Cabaret, Theater, Comedic Revues and The Wood Theater as she returns to Glens Falls to entertain on New Years Eve 2010. Joining Laura will her daughter Tina Roth and an array of family talent teaming accomplished native Glens Falls area performers with their talented parents, aunts and uncles in a glittering afternoon of Cabaret, Comedy and Broadway Music."

So much musical talent! It was a great treat.

Now we will have a cocktail while we wait for the ball to come down at midnight in Times Square.
Happy New Year to all!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'm watching CNN with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin, as we wait to see the New Year in. What an ODD combination they make. But it works!

message 1637: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm awake now, have been for while. It's about 5:30 now. I slept through midnight. I guess the rain kept all the neighbors from shooting. It's 54 & raining pretty good now.

On the schedule for today is to take down all the Xmas stuff & pack it in the barn. We'll do a good cleaning of the house, too.

message 1638: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, are you in the Eastern Time Zone like we are? I imagine so. Just wondering.

Don't remind me about putting all the Christmas stuff away. :)
Usually I wait until "Little Christmas", Jan. 6.
See detailed explanation at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_C...
"... It is the traditional end of the Christmas season and the last day of the Christmas holidays for both primary and secondary schools in Ireland."

For me, it's really just an excuse for procrastinating the job. :)

message 1640: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 01, 2011 08:43AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Just in case you hate to see the holiday end, here's a wonderful review on YouTube to make it last a little bit longer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA1SWH...
This is what I call "recollection in tranquillity". Now that it's over and we can all relax, we can enjoy it even more. Even though the song is an oldie, the wonderful way it's sung here (by the Roger Wagner Choral) makes it new all over again, especially with the well-chosen pictures to go along with it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

message 1641: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just had to give Lily a bath outside with Pert shampoo. She decided to go swimming & got all yucky with mud & such. Luckily we have hot & cold water outside the barn for washing the horses. Still, it wasn't any fun for either of us at 50 degrees. Better than the last time the dogs got into a skunk & I had to was Molly off. Then it was in the 20's, I think.

Lily has such a short coat, I don't know how she stays so warm except through sheer energy. Why she decided to go for a swim when the ice finally got off the pond yesterday is beyond me. That water is COLD.

I burned up all our old tax & bank records in the burn barrel. I've been meaning to get around to it for a while - maybe 5 or 6 years - so there was a lot to burn. It's nice to get all those bags out of my closet. I had all the bills, bank statements & tax records going back to 1997, each year half filling a grocery bag. Tossing the papers in was a blast through the past watching old debts that are paid off, old vehicle papers & such all go up in smoke.

message 1642: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Oh, yes, I'm on Eastern, but right on the western edge. The line actually bumps west around Louisville. We're a good 45 minutes behind Mom in MD as far as sunrise & sunset goes. Sometimes dawn is breaking for her when we're talking in the morning - usually Sundays when I sleep in or in the summer.

message 1643: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, that time difference for dawn is interesting. Of course, if the sun has to rise over a mountain, that would delay the dawn a bit in any case. I assume there's no mountain for you or for your mom. When we camp on the Lake George islands, the mountains do delay the sunrise.

message 1644: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) No mountains, just the way the earth turns. We're about 400 miles west of you all.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Haven't seen it, Nina, but I'm looking forward to seeing it when Netflix releases it.
"The King's Speech" (2010):

message 1648: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's 19 degrees out. Brrr... I miss our brief fling with spring. The first of the credit card bills for the Xmas rush has come in - Ugh! Not a good start to the day.

Yesterday I made a set of 1" diameter knitting needles. I'm going to try to crochet a Broomstick Lace Scarf today. It requires a regular crochet needle & a big knitting needle.

It is so cool that there are videos readily available to teach all this stuff! Not only are there millions of patterns available for free on the Internet along with instructions, but they are filled with arcane abbreviations & are often confusing. Watching the actual stitches being made makes it so clear that I think anyone could do it. Here's the video that a friend showed me for this project:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzzlVM...

message 1649: by Werner (new)

Werner Nina, I haven't seen The King's Speech myself, but my library director saw a trailer for it, and is very excited about seeing it ASAP. (She's an avid British history buff, and a fan of British royalty and all things English.)

message 1650: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 02, 2011 07:23AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, knitted scarves are very popular these days. I notice them everywhere. My sister made me a couple of boas which are more decorative than warm, but they are an attractive addition to an outfit. Some are sparkly and really dress up a plain coat or dress. Some of the yarns look like feathers.
