Nina | 6069 comments What about "greens" as I used to love to eat them when traveling in the south. Are they ordinarily eaten in KY?

message 7802: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Collard greens are often on menus here in KY. I haven't seen beet greens on the menu, though. Used to eat both, but never cared much for them. I prefer spinach with vinegar or swiss chard.

message 7803: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments When my mother would cook dandelion greens she fix them with bacon and then add vinegar to the grease and a bit of brown sugar. I really liked them.

message 7804: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I've had them like that, also collard greens with fatback. My first serious love, Linda, lived in rural North Carolina & we ate at her grandmother's a lot. She used to cook greens that way. She put fatback in all sorts of things, though. It was a bit much in some things like hominy.

message 7805: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I grew up eating hominy with scrambled eggs. Probably cooked in bacon grease.

message 7806: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) "cooked in bacon grease" is good, but her use of fatback made it more like "cooked bacon grease". Too much of a good thing at times.

message 7807: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I am not sure of fatback. Where is it's origin?

message 7808: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's just bacon fat, no meat.

message 7809: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments No fun;humid and in the nineties today, tomorrow and most of next week. Means I do everything outside early. Hope my flowers survive the heat.

message 7810: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Sounds like uncomfortable weather. We have clouds here and the temp is 79 F. At least it's comfortable.

Hope your heat wave lets up, Nina!

message 7811: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We hit 90 today before lunch, but I still got a lot of little chores done. The big, dead ash tree is cut off the path in the woods along with a smaller one & a small maple. I picked up some more rocks for the fish pond which is doing well. Haven't put them down yet, though. Instead I went for a ride with the girls. Chip is no longer jumping due to progressive navicular, but we did have a good splash & swim in the pond.

message 7812: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The "good splash" sounds like fun.

Too bad about Chip. (I looked up the word "navicular". It said: " a disease affecting the navicular bone, or the adjacent parts, in a horse's foot."

(Webster's 1913 Dictionary !!!)

message 7813: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments How serious is Chip's disease?

message 7814: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments How old is Chip? How about a photo?

message 7815: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) He turned 11 the first of this month, Joy.

Navicular will eventually lame him so badly that we'll have to put him down. It's a conformation issue that we found out about long after we bought him. Both his sister & father had the issue, although precisely what that is isn't known. I think the navicular bone is the 2d bone up, just above the coffin bone which is the lowest in the hoof. A lot of nerves & connective tissue run past it, so something in there isn't happy. Could be arthritis-like or something. We've been fixing it with special shoeing & I don't know how long he has left. Another few years, I guess.

My profile pic is a picture of us splashing in the pond. Josh did take a video of us swimming today. I'll upload it to Facebook on Tuesday. Our Internet is too slow here at home.

message 7816: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, it's too bad about Chip's problem. I hope he's not in too much pain.

message 7817: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments That is what caused my daughter's horse to be put down. They did try some new medicine and other methods but nothing worked for him, unfortunately. Sorry your horse has this problem but perhaps he'll be lucky and outlive it.

message 7818: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Joy, when he gets in too much pain, we'll put him down. A horse that can't walk around in reasonable comfort is just in hell. We don't torture anything.

Nina, thanks, but he won't outlive it. He gets some bute or Previcox on bad days, but that has to be doled out sparingly. Both are like aspirin & can cause stomach upset if too much is taken. Some people will 'nerve' a horse so they don't feel the pain, but it's a chancy operation. It doesn't always work right. I think they can easily cut a motor nerve. Even when it does work right, they have a numb foot which means they can damage themselves badly. No hoof, no horse is an old, true saying. They're super dependent on them & they're very complicated.

Half of the top of my foot is numb & I've gotten into trouble because of it. I've burned it & not noticed then got an infection because it was deeper than I thought. Ditto with a couple of cuts. I can only imagine the trouble a horse would get into. I've heard some stories & they're too horrible to repeat.

message 7819: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I understand. It's always hard but it's best for the horse.

message 7820: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Putting any animal down is hard. I had taken my cat to our local vet so many times with his various ailments that they even offered me a job and at seventy years of age I was flattered even if I didn't accept their offer. And when I had to finally make the last trip there the vet cried before putting Rover to sleep.

message 7821: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Tell me again how many horses you have besides Chip

message 7822: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It is tough to put down a horse. We'll likely get something to replace him since it's nice to have 4 horses/ponies around so we can all ride, but we'll cross that bridge when we have to. Might get something smaller. I don't need a lot of horse as I ride infrequently. Too much to do.

We have 2 other horses: Erin's old OTTB Topaz & a new OTTB Tango. We also have Marg's new pony Pumpkin. I think he's a pony, but he's close to being a horse. Just under 14.2h. Chip is just over that at 14.3h, I think. Pumpkin is a QH & Chip is an App, so both can be considered horses, if you're so inclined.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks, Jim,

message 7824: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Nice to get the update on your horse farm/ hope you are having a nice holiday. I think back when it wasn't ever Memorial Day; but called Decoration Day and it wasn't for veterans but for families to visit their own in cemeteries sometimes carrying flowers in canning jars filled with water. Veterans were honored on Armistice Day; not Veteran's day. Why the change? Yes, we still have Veteran's day but isn't that special day enough?

message 7825: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Hope you have Chip a few more years before making the hard choice.

message 7826: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited May 28, 2018 12:47PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I found the following online:
==========================================
"Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military — in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served — not only those who died — have sacrificed and done their duty."

"In 1938, Congress approved a bill that made Nov. 11 an annual legal holiday known as “Armistice Day” that would honor the cause of world peace, but it was primarily used to honor World War I veterans. In 1954, after World War II, the law was amended, the word “Armistice” was changed to “Veterans” and Nov. 11 became a day to honor veterans of all American wars."

FROM: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/a...

I also found the following:
"The preferred name for the holiday gradually changed from "Decoration Day" to "Memorial Day," which was first used in 1882. Memorial Day did not become the more common name until after World War II, and was not declared the official name by Federal law until 1967."

ALSO: [FROM WIKI] "The preferred name for the holiday gradually changed from "Decoration Day" to "Memorial Day," which was first used in 1882. Memorial Day did not become the more common name until after World War II, and was not declared the official name by Federal law until 1967. On June 28, 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved four holidays, including Memorial Day, from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May. The law took effect at the federal level in 1971. After some initial confusion and unwillingness to comply, all 50 states adopted Congress' change of date within a few years."

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, about VETERAN'S DAY AND MEMORIAL DAY, also see:
https://www.cnn.com/2014/11/10/living...

message 7828: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I read how Decoration day became Memorial day and that was interesting but it still doesn't explain why veterans were never mentioned except maybe after the Civil War with the Union commander starting the decorating of their graves. Up until the last few yeas it was a time for families to honor their own dead family members and now all is about veterans; no mention of people going to the cemetery and I guess it still seems strange to me that the emphasis in totally on veterans now. It has definitely changed the theme of the day. I have nothing against of course honoring our vets but can't it be done on Veterans day like it once was done? Apparently not.

message 7829: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Here's a video of Chip & I playing in the pond along with Pumpkin & Marg. It's about 1m30s.
https://www.facebook.com/jim.maclachl...

Erin is on Tango who wouldn't go near the pond, although he did settle down enough to eat some grass. At first he was just horrified that we'd even contemplate going into the pond. He's a young OTTB, so generally jumps mud puddles.

message 7830: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments OTTB = Off Track Thoroughbred

Looks like Chip's having fun! Also looks like he's swimming part of the way. Thanks, Jim, for the video!

message 7831: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments What a pleasant sight to see on our very hot day here. It is the second hottest May on record. Glad Chip is having fun.

message 7832: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) You're welcome. Being able to play like that makes all the farm work worth it.

message 7833: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I loved seeing the video as it was such showing a fun time and we all need that to let us know it's OK just to relax and have the spirit move us.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Nina wrote: "I am glad I'm not living in Maryland."

If you mean the flooding in Ellicot City, they flood pretty often. The way they've built around all the streams & such makes it unsurprising. Louisville floods more often since it's right on the Ohio. People have a child-like faith in flood walls & normal water levels.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Hi all

Today we are going to a barbecue - son of my husband's house. Nice to have someone else do the cooking and entertaining. Just a short 20-minute ride.

Temperature is just right for us. low 70's with nice breezes.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Have a nice t time, Linda. It's a lovely day.

message 7840: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Finally, a nice day here too. Not over eighty degrees. A blessing after all our ninety plus days.

message 7841: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I went to the Ren Faire this morning. It was fun. Spent $100 on half a dozen cement statues to put around the fish pond. A few gnomes - one is riding a rabbit. Another fairy, but she's sitting. Unfortunately, the damn thing has developed a slow leak & I can't figure out where. The pond was down 3" this morning, but we've had enough rain that I can't find any wet patches. It's all wet. I hope I don't have to take apart too much if/when I figure out where the leak is.

I finally got around to publishing Horses and Farms For Fiction Writers. A lot of autobiography in it since I used examples from my life & our horses. Pics, too. You all will have already read some of it. If anyone wants a copy & would leave me a review, message me here. Let me know what format you want & your email address & I'll send it to you.

Hopefully it will do as well as my Inkle Loom Design Construction book. That's been a surprise. It has been selling a dozen copies a month since I put it out there & I haven't marketed it at all. I thought a dozen would be all it sold. I've had a chance to chat with some interesting people about it, too.

message 7842: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I'm glad to see you had some success with your writing.

Hope you can solve the "slow leak" problem without too much trouble.

The gnome riding a rabbit sounds cute! I love gnomes!

message 7843: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I, too, love gnomes. Please take a photo of them after you get your pond problem solved and congratulations of publishing your book. It sounds intriguing.

message 7844: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I put up a couple of pictures of the new fish pond. The water is a bit murky as I'm still trying to track down that slow leak. Thought I had it, but it turned out it was just the stream wasn't running very fast due to a filter that needed cleaning. Sigh.

Anyway, here's the view from the front porch.

Here's the view from the lane.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Very pretty. A lovely spot! Thanks for the pics, Jim!
Love those gnomes! :) A happy place for them.

message 7846: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I think I'm going to replace the ugly black waterfall with a tall fairy. Have to see if The Boss OKs it, though.

message 7847: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I too love the gnomes and really like the pool design of the stones surrounding it. Thanks for the pictures; hard to imagine it otherwise.

message 7848: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, all. It's been a lot of work & probably will be for a while. Fiddling stuff right now. I took the hose out of the waterfall & set it further down the stream in an attempt to find the slow leak. I spent an hour looking for it earlier today. I thought I'd given it enough time to settle in before finalizing the landscaping. Apparently not. If I have to do any work now, it's going to be a major pain.
