Nina | 6069 comments We go to dentist on Thursday. Hope our report is batter than yours Linda. Always something to worry over. Sorry for yours.

message 7602: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Dentist had to cut the bridge off, didn't pop off after several banging attempts!! Have a temporary bridge. Go back on Tuesday. No steak until after the permanent bridge is received. Mostly eating one one side. Maybe I'll loose a pound or two which is always a good thing!!

Nice sun this morning. Cold though. Doing odds and ends this morning then off to work this afternoon.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The plastic bellows broke on my scroll saw which means the sawdust sits on the line making it tough to see. Bending down to blow it off works, but interrupts the flow. To finish the project I was working on, I jury rigged a connection to my air compressor, but that was definitely a temporary measure since it's loud, way over-powered, & I had to stretch an air hose across the floor of the shop.

My scroll saw is 25 or 30 years old, a 16" Ryobi SC-160, but doesn't have many hours on it. Ryobi doesn't even show it on its site any more. A couple of third parties sell parts for it, but not the bellows which is a cheap little plastic syringe with a spring in it that is pushed by the arm of the saw. It's never been very good. Unless the nozzle was very close to the cut & precisely aimed, it didn't work.

I had the idea to use an aquarium air pump & googled it to see if anyone else had tried it. Oh yeah. Apparently my issue is common. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any idea of what size aquarium pump I should buy & they're so cheap that most don't even come with any sort of rating like cubic inches per minute or something, so it's kind of a moot point, anyway.

The local pet store that is undergoing some remodeling, so out of a lot of stock, but the owner said he thought he had some used ones around. He sold me a tiny one, only a few inches on a side, for $3. I didn't see how I could go wrong at that price & it was a neat place to look around. They have a lot of fish & various reptiles that were fun to look at.

I plugged the pump into a 4 gang box I made up that has a switch & a duplex receptacle in it with a 3' cord I made from a PC power cord. The hose hooked right up & it works far better than the bellows ever did. I just use a different switch to turn the scroll saw on with. If I don't, I'm afraid I'll forget & leave the air pump running. It's super quiet.

Nina, I think Jim meant that he used an aquarium air pump to fix the plastic bellows on his scroll saw, if I understood it correctly. He doesn't have an aquarium. If he did, we would have heard about his fish a long time ago. LOL (Or I would have asked him about his aquarium fish!)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS - As we know by now, Jim is pretty ingenious! A real Rube Goldberg! LOL

(Now I'll have to search for the origin of that reference (Rube Goldberg). LOL

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS - RUBE GOLDBERG was a United States cartoonist who drew intricate diagrams of very complicated and impractical contraptions that accomplished little or nothing (1883-1970).

Not for years. We had 3 when the kids were little. I made one that we raised bull frogs in. A big one had a lot of different freshwater tropical fish & a frog. The 'miniature' African frog turned out to be a pain since he like to eat anything he could fit in his mouth. He grew bigger than he was supposed to & had a BIG mouth. Eating one of the corydoras catfish did him in. They have spines.

I modified another with a swamp shelf in it & stocked it with one of everything from the local streams. It took me ages to get a hog fish, a bottom feeder. I guess I was too excited about it because Erin was enthralled although she was only 3 years old. She proudly told me she fed the fish when I got home from work. She had - an entire shaker full of black pepper. Only a Pumpkin Seed & a crayfish were still alive.

Anyway, between the frog, pepper, & bullfrogs growing up, I lost interest. That was back in the early 90s. I'd kind of like to have one now, but we really don't have a place for one unless I custom build it. They're also a fair amount of work & pretty much a black pit to throw money into. We have horses for that.
;)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I love Rube Goldberg inventions. I've made some for the kids over the years, usually something with ball bearings or marbles. My oldest boy loved to work on them, too.

message 7613: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I think you are a Rube Goldberg in disguise.

message 7614: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments I've never heard of Rube Goldberg.
Going to read Joy's link information to see what I've been missing.

Jim reminds me of a former boss. Name is Eric and he's a software engineer, a teacher at RPI, a musician of sorts, a juggler, a good woodworker, and on an on and on. He's always doing or making something. Even raised chickens for a while - mmmmm fresh chicken eggs are the absolute best.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks! I can't carry a tune or beat, unfortunately. The rest, yes.

message 7619: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, and it actually looked good in that particular setting; not that I'd want one but might look fine in a certain modern living room.

message 7620: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Unusual and interesting. I'd like to know a little bit about the home owner.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments What am I doing today? Going out! Couldn't yesterday due to ice issues.

Nice sunny day. Need to pick up some vegetable broth. Making Rigatoni (gluten free kind) with Butternut squash. A recipe from Giada De Laurentiis. She added shrimp. I've made with shrimp but will pass on this and add sliced grape tomatoes instead. Very creamy and tasty dish.

message 7624: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments No. I've never heard of it.

message 7625: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We have it rather than pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. The recipe is fr om my old Betty Crocker cookbook and I've been making it since around 1960. It calls for cooked strained Butternut Squash.

Very yummy. My husband said let's get some shrimp. Bought a handful of medium count shrimp and cut in half for a nice bit size. Hmmmm hmmm good.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Nina wrote: "Have you ever eaten New England Squash pie? It is simply delicious."

I have never heard of this either. Is there a crust?

message 7629: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I use one Butternut squash cot in four small halves. I place these halves upside down on a cookie sheet with a lid and pour some water in it. I then bake the squash for about an hour on 350 degree over. I check a few times to make sure there is still water in the pan. After they are soft to the touch of a fork piercing the shells, I take them out of the oven and scoop the pulp out and place it in my blender. This smooths the pulp. A work processor would work or any strainer type. I need to end up with three cups of squash. This with added ingredients will yield enough for two pies. And after adding the ingredients this is poured into two unbaked crusts in nine inch pie pans. Here are the added ingredients;

3 cups squash, 1 teaspoon salt, 3 large eggs, 1 cup sugar, 1 half tsp. ginger, 1 tsp. cinnamon, one half tsp. nutmeg, 1 Tablespoon melted butter, 2 cups of evaporated milk. Mix ingredients together and pour into pie crusts; Bake 45 minutes at 425 degree oven temp. Make sure knife comes out clean before you take pies from the oven. serve with real whipped cream when the pies are cool. Enjoy.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Ah, whipped cream too!

message 7631: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Sounds good. Fresh home made whipped cream.

Kitchen must smell marvelous with nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and butternut squash. Have half a glass of wine listening to some nice classical music. Then pie with tea. Then go back and have the other half glass of wine!!

message 7632: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It tastes a bit like pumpkin but a more delicate tasting. Yes, white wine would compliment this/ Blanc d' Blanc or Vouvery.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Butternut squash also makes a nice soup.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Is anyone else going to do the Great Back Yard Bird Count? It's really easy & a lot of fun. I saw a lot more birds a lot better when I did it last year, just 2 times for 15 minutes each. I'm not a real birder, but we spend a fair amount of money feeding them & I have a lot of bird houses up around the farm.

Anyway, it's really easy to do. Go to
http://gbbc.birdcount.org/
create an account & then you can get a list of birds based on your location using your zip code. That list helps identify almost all the birds. For questionable ones (Who can tell the differences between sparrows?) there are easy links to do that, too. Doing this helps out Cornell's Ornithology department, too.

That's a great project, Jim, but I don't see many birds from where I sit.

Nina | 6069 comments I can't believe how Un-user friendly trying to sign in to that bird count is. I went to the new account as you suggested and after filling in my first name and last name and user name(nina) and password the notice comes us that my user name is wrong. I then tried my first name in that slot and that was wrong. What do they mean User name? I have never had this much trouble trying to sign in to something before this.

message 7647: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I guess they want a unique user name, Nina. Think of it as a unique nickname. Try something like protoNina.
