Nina | 6069 comments I fear this book is the same/very very wordy and I might not be able to stick to it. Just lost my password page. What next?

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Taking my new kayak out tomorrow. My paddles arrived by mail today; ordered them online.

Husband will go fishing. I will kayak within his view. Small lake. Packing a picnic lunch, some hot coffee.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Have fun. We're going to have Irma dumping some much needed rain, I hope. Winds aren't supposed to be bad & they're only projecting a couple of inches. We got 5" out of Harvey & that soaked in immediately, barely any mud.

message 7354: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Wish we could have the rain/only high clouds for us and it has been 15 days since rain. It seems to either pour or not at all

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments A very belated but heartfelt wish to all of you that your weekend was enjoyable.

I was going to have a big reading binge on the Labor Day weekend. I broke my reading glasses on Friday, September 1st & had to go without until September 5th.

Nothing makes you want to read more than not being able to!

Tried reading with a pocket magnifier butvit was too cumbersome.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Bad break, Mary. :)

Thanks for the good wishes.

message 7357: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That stinks, Mary. I'm lucky since I get my reading glasses in 3 packs from the drug store & always keep extras around. I need to since I tend to lose & destroy them on a fairly regular basis. I used to get them from an optometrist, but now that my eyes have finished the big "40 year old" change (which took until I was 50) they've evened out.

Oh dear, Mary. I have spare over-the-counter reading glasses that still work for me even though I need regular glasses which I now use all day long.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments First trip with my new kayak went very well. Calm lake. Launched a few times for practice and did well.

Saw a family of red-headed Mergansers, a family of Mallards. Then, to my surprise and quite unexpected for this Lake - I was paddling past a small island and in front of me were 2 Loons. So excited. Unfortunately I did not have a camera with me as I left it on shore.

Years ago, I participated on a yearly basis for about 10 years in the Loon Census. This involved being on a body of water at 8am and reporting any sightings of loons seen during the period of 8am to 9am.

Great day!

message 7360: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Very cool, Linda. It's a shame you didn't get the picture, but sometimes it's best to leave the camera behind. I find that I miss a lot when I'm trying to take pictures rather than enjoy the scenery.

message 7361: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Yes, and this time I did want to focus on my surroundings and the new kayak. I have the picture of the 2 loons stored in my memory. Anyhow I do have LOTS of pictures of loons but not from this particular lake.

message 7362: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Sounds good Linda. Enjoy your boat/kayak.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Oh, and I'd like to mention I can add another bird to my list of sightings.

First, a hummingbird flew past me Tuesday. Quickly went to find the feeders, clean them and put back up. Now, glad I did this task.

Last night, I looked out the window and there was a bird at the bird bath drinking water. Wasn't a chickadee which is the only bird to drink from the feeder. This bird went to the hummingbird feeder and was drinking from each open hole and then drinking from the well. He flew over to the 2nd feeder and did the same thing then went back to the other feeder.

This bird was around for a good 3 minutes that I had time to study his coloring. Looked him up at the bird was a black-throated blue warbler. Exciting for me! Logged in my bird book!

message 7364: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Cool!

message 7366: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Interesting, Linda and glad you added some info on this bird, Joy as I'd not only never seen one but had not even heard of it.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments This is to let you know that we're having trouble with our e-mail program via Time-Warner (now known as Spectrum).

So we won't be getting any email or notices from Goodreads until it is fixed. Meanwhile, I won't be checking into Goodreads until our email is fixed.

Spectrum said it would take 3 to 5 days to get back to me about fixing our email.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Marg & Erin took the truck & trailer up to Columbus, OH to look at a new horse yesterday. It's a 4 hour trip each way. They left before 7am & broke down about 30 miles from home, no horse, thankfully. We have 'Horse & Rider', something like AAA, except specifically for dealing with trucks, trailers, & horses. They did a good job & got everyone home by 8:30pm. Marg came home with one truck towing the trailer & the guy did a good job parking the trailer. Erin rode with the tow truck carrying the pickup.

We'll have to pay for a second tow to the mechanic tomorrow. The truck started bucking, so it sounds like either the rear or transfer case went out on it. Whichever, I'm sure it's going to be expensive to fix, but we'll have to even though the truck is getting up there. It's a 2005 with 80K miles on it, but new trucks are crazy expensive especially since we need an extended cab, 4WD, an 8' bed, & the ability to tow a 7500 lb trailer. It's not even worth looking at used pickups. They hold their value too well.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, please let us know when you get a new horse.
Have you chosen a name for it yet?

message 7371: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Hope the email is fixed soon, Joy. No, we never pick a name for a horse until we've gotten it. Not sure we're going to now, although Marg is out looking at 2 more today. But how could you name something before knowing it? Of course, she did a rotten job with Indy. She should have left his name as Dennis, as in Dennis the Menace.

message 7372: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments How many horses to you currently own, Jim?

message 7373: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Just 3, Joy. Topaz is actually Erin's, but he lives here with Indy & Chip. We've had up to 5, 6 briefly, but that's too many.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Three is enough! There's a funny YouTube clip which Jerry Seinfeld does about horses. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIXAc...

message 7375: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks. Unfortunately, he has never tickled my funny bone. There are a lot of funny horse videos out there, but I suspect what horse people find funny is quite different than the rest of humanity.
;)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Bad news this morning. A friend's kid, who spent enough time with us that it was hard to tell whose kid he was, died last night when a car pulled out in front of his motorcycle. His girlfriend, who has 2 small kids, is in Shock Trauma & not expected to live. He just turned 40. His parents are great people, but he struggled with a heroin addiction for years & finally seemed to have his act together the past 5 or so. My boys, who have always thought of him as a brother, are pretty shaken up, especially the youngest who was closest to him.

I haven't told my daughter yet. It's going to hit her really hard since her husband commutes to & from work on a motorcycle regularly.

A word of caution with Spectrum - watch your bills every month. They arbitrarily raise the rates. A few Class Action lawsuits (through Attorney General's office) against them regarding internet speed, blah blah blah.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments You all may recall that I resigned from my full-time position at the end of June. Guess what??! I am going back part-time a couple of days a week starting in October. Instead of being on the road visiting with clients I'll be working in the office with my main role as an Inquiry Specialist.

Now, I'll just drive to the office and back home. Previously I'd drive to the office and then could be driving from point A to B to C (and sometimes more) amounting to 75 to 100 miles in a day not counting the mileage to and from work.

Will be a nice welcome change.

message 7383: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Congrats, I guess, Linda. It's funny how often that happens. A friend of ours retired & wound up going back part time for quite a while. We have a couple of people here working part time because we can't find anyone to fill their position.

Nina | 6069 comments Not a new book, but I think a very important one I just finished reading should be on everyone's list TR. "The Book Thief," and I imagine you have already read it Joy and reviewed it and if so post it so I can see what you think.

Nina | 6069 comments Today I am glad to be among the living but not so sure about that a week ago as I had a terrible virus and was literally laid low. Now I am just grateful I could once again feel up to walking around the block and watering some of my flowers and just enjoy not being sick. Have so much to be grateful for even reading a book again and not rushing off for the awful urges of sickness. Hope none of you come across this bug. I once had a poem published that started, "Oh, flu why cans't thou flee, for I have had enough of thee."

message 7393: by Mary JL (new)

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments I would like to say I was out frolicking in the nice fall weather. But I can't! Omaha has a temperature right now of 92 degrees F and a heat index of 101!!!!!!!

So, I am in the house reading. There are worse fates.

However, having either heat or cold keep you inside can be boring after a while. It is supposed to be extra hot all weekend with a cold front and welcome rain Monday afternoon.

message 7394: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We hit 90 yesterday & it was hot again today. I'm planning on mowing the fields this weekend plus we're getting a delivery of hay tomorrow morning. It will be most of what we need, 230 bales of the 300 we'll need. I spent yesterday afternoon making sure the barn is ready.

message 7395: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, tomorrow autumn is coming even in ninety degrees. It will be eighty nine here tomorrow but cool air is expected by the middle of next week and probably will make it's way to Ky.

message 7396: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We've been having an Indian Summer here.

message 7397: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The hay is all in before the heat of the day started, too. He lost one bale on the road & they're light bales, so we'll get another 131 one evening this week or next Saturday morning. The hay is gorgeous, but very fine with a fair amount of clover, so the bales are also loose. If they weren't, we'd lose too many to mold before they'd finished breathing. We only stacked them 5-6 high, but will probably lose a few anyway. The art of baled hay is more complicated than most realize, but this young guy (30-35?) seems to have it down.

He brought his brother & son. The son is about 10 or 12 & pitched right in as best he could, generally pulling bales forward from the top of the trailer to one of us. Josh helped too, so even though we couldn't get the big trailer into the barn, it wasn't a big deal stacking the back.

I got the log jumps stacked back up before they got here. I don't know who got mad at them, but someone pawed big chunks out of them & flattened one jump completely.

Josh & I filled the horse barn with hay, just a couple of dozen bales, but still nice to have done. We got all the jumps & rails stacked back in the barn for the winter, too. It's still too wet to mow, so I came in to get brunch. Hopefully it will be dry enough to mow by the time I'm done. I kind of doubt it, though. Really heavy dew again. I guess I can weed or spend a little time in the shop.

Thank you everyone. Sounds fun to me - 4 hours goes by so quickly. Be able to have breakfast and lunch with hubby before I head out. He'll start dinner prep. Some extra cash each week. All good stuff.

message 7399: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Today, going to take a ride by a sort of local lake/beach for lunch. Outdoor sitting under shade.

Nina, I hope you are feeling back to your regular self. Mary - let's hope for a lower heat index today.

Jim and isn't there a difference between hay and straw? So much to learn about hay. I know it makes me sneeze!

message 7400: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Linda, hay is food, straw is bedding. Hay is typically meadow/orchard grass, timothy, or alfalfa while straw is the stems of rye, wheat, or barely after the grain has been threshed off. Straw used to be a lot cheaper than hay, but now it can be a bit more so we use wood chips for bedding.
