Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Counting down the days to last day at work in my full-time position. 8 days counting today (don't work on Mondays). At some point, I'll find a part-time job (like 15 hours a week would be ideal though hard to find).

My vacation - 11 days counting weekends - helped get me in the right frame of mind.

Today at work my replacement will be shadowing me on the visits to potential clients.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That must have been great, Nina. It's great to get so many generations together. My grandson is lucky to have his great-great grandmother alive on his mother's side. Ashley, my daughter-in-law, sent us some pictures of the two together recently. I've only met the woman once when the kids got married. She was quite active then, but that was 5 years ago. Apparently she's in a wheel chair now. Shame.

Having the post hole digger on the tractor makes for a lot less work. We'd still be digging a few of those post holes if not for it. The clay soil is incredibly hard. We got 1/2" of rain early Monday morning. By the time we were digging post holes yesterday afternoon, we couldn't tell there had been any. Dry as a bone.

We have 7 more to go. 1 fence post that should be easy, but the rest will be finicky to fill. They're for the 4x4's for their back door deck. All pretty much in the same area with quite a slope to work on plus buried phone & electric wires to stay away from. Shouldn't be a big deal, but it is just one more thing.

Hopefully we'll get them all dug this evening. Then we can rig/weld up a carrier for the tractor to carry & unroll the fence wire. They sell such a thing, but they're expensive & we can't justify buying one. No one rents them, either. Shouldn't be too big an issue, although I don't think we'll get to pulling the wire until this weekend. Then we have gates to move around & put in, not to mention the deck to build. I'm making a 4 day weekend out of the 4th, so hopefully we can wrap it all up by then.

Nina | 6069 comments Interesting to have a great great grandmother for your grandson. When my first great grandson was born his fifth great aunt was still alive and alert and living at home at age 104 and on that birthday the Kansas City Star newspaper came out and took pictures as did the local TV news. It was on one of their nightly news programs.

Very interesting. You are the only person I "know" who can even speak of great greats and fifth great Aunts. Wow!!

Did the President send a letter to the 104-year old? Sometimes they do!!

message 7159: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments No, the president didn't send a letter and they didn't have her on the Smucker's add on the Today show either although her daughter sent in the info. And Jim said his grandson has a great great grandmother. Linda, I was an only child and I have twenty one great grandchildren.

message 7160: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments I was a youngster when my great grandmother died. All grandparents were deceased by the time I was 25.

Jim and Nina - how wonderful to have "great great" relatives. My family is quite small. My sister-in-law has been working on our ancestry / family tree for several years and finding many obstacles. No one around to ask questions.

You certainly keep yourself busy with worthwhile projects. For this weekend I intend of relaxing and figuring out a plan / purpose for each day of my days off of work (don't like labeling this retirement as I do plan on working sometime, somewhere).

Not sure what we will do today. Damp, muggy and expecting more rain.

message 7166: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's a gorgeous day here. 70s, clear & sunny. Not very squishy, either. All the rain soaked right in.

message 7167: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Finally. good weather here also/seventies. yeah!

message 7168: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was a great day & I'm bushed. It was perfect for weeding - sunny, nice breeze, & in the mid 70s. The ground was wet enough that most came right out so I weeded along the road & where I planted the lilies along the north fence of the back yard plus miscellaneous places. I guess I spent all afternoon doing that from noon to 5:30 or so.

In the midst of that I had to fix the fish pond twice. The waterfall wasn't working. The pipe to it was clogged with mud. Later I noticed the water level in the pond was down & I think I traced it to the waterfall leaking through a hole now that its level is higher. Seems the pond liner material is going & a lily had broken through. Ugh. I hope I don't have to tear that out & redo it. That's a lot of work & it would be tough to do now. The entire pond is tightly encircled by thick, tall flowers (cone flowers & lilies) which are at their prime & blooming now.

Nina | 6069 comments In spite of the hard work or I guess because of it your place sounds lovely.

message 7170: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Nina. We think it is. A lot of it is due to the hard work, though.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Joy.

It's 54 degrees here this morning! We opened the house up yesterday morning, so it actually feels chilly inside. Big difference from the high 80s & low 90s we've been dealing with. A lot lower humidity, too.

message 7173: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments 62 degrees here. I too opened some windows to get the nice fresh cool air in the house.

We sat on the back deck, drinking our coffee and watching the backyard birds.

Do you have any daisies, even wild daisies? My favorite flower (weed).

message 7175: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Some daisies, both wild & store-bought. I like them, too. The latter haven't been doing great, but this year seems better. I always get some of the wild ones with the little flowers. Those are weeds around here.

message 7176: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments When first married, my husband would buy me roses on those special occasions. I said save $ and buy daisies with a rose or 2.

We planted some daisies but they didn't take. Our soil is loaded with rocks and lime (lots of pine trees).

I want to get out of the car on highways (I won't don't worry) when there are beautiful daisies passing by.

When we do strawberry picking there are daisies here and there. I've learned to take a scissor with me - the farmers say yes go ahead take some daisies - and they are free!! Pick enough to make a nice bouquet.

Book club read this book several months ago. I thought it was very well-written and a good book. Never ever forget this tragic time.

Glad he's doing well. 91yo God Bless!

Nina | 6069 comments Eye dr says his vision will improve each day for thirty days. Let's hope so. Yes, at ninety one he is still cutting down bushes, cleaning gutters, building and repairing parts of our fence and out walking me/always in front. No one at the hospital could believe his age. In the past he has had three heart attacks and open heart surgery at age seventy. He actually even then looked at least fifteen years younger but says he now feels his age..I don't believe him.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Linda wrote: "Rainy day here. Did backyard bird watching. Luckily spotted a red-bellied woodpecker feeding a young one."

We've been watching a mother feeding a juvenile one in our back yard frequently over the past week or so. We have a big cross with 5 hangers & the young woodpecker walks around on the top while the mother hops down, gets food, & then pops back up to feed it. Very interesting to watch, isn't it?

Do you ever have something you just can't seem to remember? I can't seem to remember the name of the hibiscus flowers which have taken over the side of our back deck. I don't know why but I call them all sorts of weird names. I have just 2 plants, but each is over 6' tall & has so many stalks on it that they spread out over 10' to either side. They're just starting to bloom now, huge purple blooms. Very pretty.

Maybe you will catch a sighting of parents feeding the babies. Keep the camera nearby.

Nina | 6069 comments After the cataract surgery my husband has a black eye and he told our friend's at church this morning I'm the one who gave it to him; however, one many said that's not possible as she's not left handed. "So there," I told him.
