What are U doing today? (Ongoing thread)
What am I doing today? I am helping my wife with planning details for two--yes, TWO--weddings this summer. My daughters are going to be marrying two great guys, so it is a very joyous--albeit hectic--time.
I'm taking a break from the ongoing wedding plans. I just posted a new entry on my goodreads blog--The Silo: A Mother's Intuition. https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog...
Best.

2 weddings in one season? Ugh. At least my kids spaced them out by a couple of years or more. The oldest one is planning to get married again Halloween 2018. She wants a fancy wedding, he doesn't. I'm with him. They've owned a house together for 6 years. Next year they'll be automatically married via common law, anyway. They should use the money to put solar cells on the house or pay down the mortgage - something useful. Oh well, their call.
Speaking of weddings I was to go to catch a plane to go to Greece to a wedding along with my daughter and her husband. It was the wedding of my husband's nephew/daughter's first cousin. The plan was a neighbor of my daughter's was to bring her and my son in law to our house and my husband was to come for work and take all three of us to the airport. After the daughter and son in law arrived and we were all getting organized I heard the doorbell and when I answered it the man who picks up our trash was standing there and asking me if the last suitcase on the drive was to go into the truck and when I screamed "NO" he took off as did the truck with my son in law's belongings/passport, ticket, camera..NO, he did have his passport in his pocket but no ticket and money so off we went in my car chasing the truck and when it stopped we tried going through the trash to no avail. We went back home in time for my husband to come and he couldn't believe the story. Well, we went to the airport and tried calling our travel agent to try and get another ticket but she was on half time and then as we are standing in line hoping she can get another ticket the man in front of me was so disturbed by our situation that he, being a pilot called and had the plane delayed and then our agent said to pay for a ticket to Chicago and she'd see if she could get the ticket to Greece sent there. This went on and on as my daughter and son in law had to leave the plane in the terminal to try and get the ticket and almost missed that plane taking off.
They never got the ticket to Greece so my son in law had to pay. He had in the meantime had to cancel his discover card. Never leave your bag on a driveway is the lesson we learned. But, a few months later our Kansas City Star travel section had a contest to see who had the worst travel horror story and guess who won.
When the editor called to tell me she had picked my story she said she hoped I wouldn't be insulted but they all laughed when they read my descriptions..I did get seventy five dollars/wouldn't cover the cost to go to Athens however.
Nina, the IS a horror story! Here's another. My cousin and his wife were in Europe and she lost her pocketbook with all their valuables. They had to come home.
Time to rest after hosting a luncheon for twelve. This is for my garden club so I put a DVD on in my garden room of a tour of a garden in all seasons. Quite lovely. Then turned on my fountain so they could listen to gurgling water falls as they ate cheese grits, blueberry cream cheese Poviticia bread, cinnamon rolls, apple strudel and chicken, cheese wrap arounds and sliced cantelope. Then sparkling apple cider. My azaleas and clematis were pretty today and the temp was in the seventies and no rain so I was lucky.
Glad the luncheon went well, Nina.Bad news for the poor killdeer. They're down to 2 eggs. I guess a snake has been snacking. The well isn't far away & Lily has been sniffing around the rocks around it a lot. She purely hates snakes. I looked, but couldn't find it, not that I'd do anything to it unless it was poisonous.
I'm with Lily as I too hate snakes but we did have almost a pet black snake at our property at the Lake as he/she always laid exactly in the same spot under our oak tree and we named him Albert. But my husband had to kill the copperhead with a shovel.

How many years apart are your daughters?
I'm back home from a long weekend. Counted 44 hawks on way up and down thruway. No new sightings of birds at the Montezuma - http://friendsofmontezuma.org/ - still enjoy going there though.Niagara Falls was busy including the Clifton Hills district - https://www.topofcliftonhill.com/. We took a short walk then headed over to the casino for our free dinner. Slots were cooperative allowing us to keep our money for awhile to enjoy the games and play.
Relaxing trip. Good to be away great to be back home.
Sounds like a fun trip, Linda. That's a lot of hawks, but I often see 3 or 4 just on my way home from work now. They're pretty, but it makes having chickens or other fowl not worth it. A chicken house is expensive enough, but needing to deal with a run of any sort just ruins it for me. Mom's finally given up, too.

Sounds like fun, Linda. Once on my birthday I went to a birdwatcher's event at our local park and it learned a lot; at least at the time.

I gave each one a pair of garden gloves as they left.
I took the day off to get some things done around the place, but didn't get nearly as much done as I wanted. While I did a lot of little chores, the big deal was transplanting road-side lilies on the north fence of the yard, a small clump every couple of feet for about 75', I guess. A lot, anyway. The most amazing thing was how easy it was to dig all of them up out of the goats' paddock. There are tons in there even though they trim them pretty often. That took all morning & I spent the afternoon watering them & mowing the yard. The hose doesn't reach down that far, so instead of getting another hose, I just used buckets. Mowing took about 2.5 hours, more than usual since the grass got so tall & thick in just 5 days. It should continue to grow like crazy as the next 4 or 5 days are calling for showers on & off.

No hummingbirds yet. This weekend staying home to get household and yard work started. Probably not getting it done as rain is expected. Will be good to get a good stab at raking the yard.
Did some raking this morning and was able to get the hosta bed cleaned up. Now I'm sweating! Happy Birthday, Nina.
Mom sent me a care package of Phystogia (obedient plan or false dragonhead,) & fall blooming anemone. I got them all planted & the gardens along the road weeded. Went to the Shelbyville Master Gardeners' sale & picked up a BIG tomato plant (2'+ tall) for $10 & another smaller one. Got them planted, too. Can't recall the varieties, but sandwich sized tomatoes. Good day, if a bit warm.
Today, I'll be catching up on paperwork. Our cable tv provider has changed and are offering new packages. My health insurance changed and I need to review their process. More along those lines. Last week we just bought a new utensil basket for our dishwasher. Friday, after running the dishwasher all the dishes were very wet and not very well cleaned. Turns out the temperature is not getting very hot. My husband believes he can fix this but we aren't certain at what costs. We are trying to avoid buying a new dishwasher. Yes, I'm being stubborn. Let's see what happens (perhaps I should check out new dishwashers online today so I'm prepared).
Looks nice outdoors right now. Only around 40 degrees. I'll wait till it warms up before sitting out on the deck.
Good luck with the dishwasher problem. I will have to say our new from three years ago dishwasher gets the dishes sparkling clean but they are wet after supposedly being finished drying. So who knows.
Hubby had the dishwasher on the floor (yes turned over) in order to see the circuit board. Not able to repair. Darn. Went to Lowe's. Then headed to Sears. Wanted a Bosh dishwasher but learned they don't have heated drying. Ended up buying a Kenmore with a top tray for utensils and heated drying.
I'll be washing dishes until May 9. Could have gotten delivery May 6 but we will be away for the weekend.
Oh well. We tried to avoid buying a new one.
I think you made a good choice, Linda. Hope you are happy with it. Jim I don;t know what an obedient plant looks like. Post a picture when it blooms. Sounds interesting. Tomato plant must look grand at that height.
The obedient plant is also called 'false dragonhead' & its proper name is Physostegia virginiana. It gets 3'-4' tall with lots of small blooms up the stalk.

Lovely color.

Spotted a ladder-backed woodpecker outside work window today. Surprised to see this species here as they reside in California east to west Oklahoma and south through Mexico. No hummingbirds yet. Who can blame them with the thunderstorms of yesterday and the coolness of today.
That was one frighteningly loud thunder storm last night! It did a lot of damage around Cambridge, NY. I was so afraid there'd be an outage in our area. I guess we were luckier than Cambridge.
The ladder-back is black and white similar to other woodpeckers except that instead of spots of white they have barred backs or ladder-backs. Similar to the Red-Bellied Woodpecker. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/L...

Wanted clothes and shoes nearby in case we had to leave the house. Somehow, I fell asleep even with all the noise.
Thanks, Linda for posting the woodpecker photo and now I do recognize it but didn't know it's correct name. I have a word for you Joy. It was in an essay in NYT magazine on April 30th. You probably already know the meaning but I didn't and was interesting what I found out. The word is "frenemy." "Flr two days in Abidjan on the Ivory coast she found herself both frenemy and fixer to Nina Simone." The meaning is one who pretends t be a friend but is actually an enemy or a person with whom one is friendly despite a fundamental dislike or rivalry. Also, Disney once made a teen comedy titled, "Frenemies."
I also keep a flashlight handy. Safer than candles. Also when I posted on Facebook that I was reading my Kindle by flashlight my grandson sent me an early birthday present in case of another outage/a paper white kindle. It has lights.

Our dog gets anxious when he sees us going out. He refuses to go outside to the yard but will willingly get into the car in the driveway. This is all a form of separation anxiety.
