ABANDONED. Trying to find title of a thriller book about a giant invisible sphere

That's about all I can remember really!

I read this book about ten years ago after getting it out of my local library so could possibly have been published in the late 90s or early 00s. I vageuly remember the cover being black and purple or a very dark blue. It was an adult thriller novel about this giant invisible sphere that would roll around crushing everything in it's path. The main character was a woman (I think) and at some point she gets abducted by some group of people trying to trap and control this sphere.

It's been driving me crazy and I'd love to know if anyone else has read this. I'm not sure why I care, I don't think I enjoyed it that much!

This might be a book called Under the Dome by Stephen King. I havent read the book but this sound similar.
