Discuss the brooding captain and his duties here!

Lucy Qhuay Ok, so who knows me knows that I love the quiet brooding hero but can I just talk about how much Chaol pissed me off?
I really didn't like how Chaol kept "reminding" us that Celaena is an assassin and judging her, talking as if she was such a lowlife. As if he was better than her.
Excuse me, but he doesn't know the circumstances that made an assassin of Celaena.
I think that we all know that she went through pretty awful things and that she is not an assassin by choice.
Plus, it is not like Chaol hasn't killed people in his line of duty. I'm sure he has.
If it weren't for that, I would be totally head over heels for him but things as they are, I think he needs to change his behaviour.

Totally!

I mean, as much as I love Chaol (its kinda hard not to, in my opinion!), he really needs to concentrate on building their friendship and being less judgemental and moody.
Like come on - the ball scene? SHE ASKED YOU TO DANCE, dude!! She was being nice! And he totally shot her down. Not to mention that not only does he often make judgmental statements about her being an assassin, but he also lets that carry on into her as a woman as well.
If I were Celaena...a punching might have been in order :)
And his mood swings (don't get me started on them!). He's horrid to her at the ball, grudgingly nice during training and then staring up at her balcony and getting jealous of Dorian...
Make up your mind, Chaol!

How can you talk thus about my lovely Chaol, Lucy?! XD

Emma.Leigh (jokersdaughter) I loved Chaol to he was awesome, but he did get on my nerves a lot and he should gotten to know her instead of reminding her she was an assassin and then getting jealous over Dorian.

Exactly!
Chaol is way too prejudiced, judgemental and moody!
We already know Celaena is an assassin, for pity's sake. We don't need to be constantly reminded of that!
If the idea of killing people horrified him such, he wouldn't be Captain and he wouldn't be the one who forced her to present herself before the Prince so that she was force to compete to be the king's assassin.
As a Captain, he has already killed people and he is going to do so again in the future. And forcing her to present herself to the king, he is, not only forcing her to present her services to a despicable man that is definitley going to do more harm than good, but also making one more "lowlife" walk in the open.
And he appears to love to humiliate people. Can you forget that he made her kneel like a beggar?
And, like you said, his judgemental and prejudiced behaviour carries on to Celaena as a person and woman.
She's an assassin, therefore she's a lowlife, thus a not good enough woman.
Excuse me, but after all this he doesn't even have the right to feel jealous of Dorian!

True. Chaol is awesome (love him to bits) but what I don't like is how everyone keeps reminding her that she's an assassin.

Because...she knows she's one?!

It's like someone reminding you that you're a teenager. Every day. And using that as their reasoning behind everything. "You can't come with us because you're a teenager," "You're untrustworthy because you're a teenager." Hello?! I know I'm a teenager. I am highly aware of the fact. Thank you for rubbing it in. Same with Celaena. Except assassins get more of a bad rep.

Melissa I feel like if they're relationship changes then he'll eventually stop reminding her of that fact and become a better person in the process. Or maybe he'll just get bitter when she chooses the guy who doesn't rub her face in every little thing she does wrong.

Very true, Mel. I think Celaena brings out the better qualities in him - their hug scene near the end of the book was so adorable! Who knows who she'll choose...but I think Chaol and Celaena have the capacity to be really good friends if he treats her right, regardless of whether or not they venture into romantic territory.

I feel the same, Choal just needs to see that while Celaena excels at being an assassin she didn't choose to become one. She was kinda forced into it, but he hasn't taken the time to realize that which puts a huge strain on their relationship.

Cassandra | 3 comments Judgmental Chaol did get on my nerves but hopefully he'll change and if not a punching is in order by our favorite heroine.

Cassandra (The Book & Movie Dimension blogger) wrote: "Judgmental Chaol did get on my nerves but hopefully he'll change and if not a punching is in order by our favorite heroine."

*laughs* I'm sure Celaena would be more than happy to do the honours!

Sydney she.her (bewberry) In the beginning I think Chaol was just doing his job as Captain of the Guard. Not trusting Celaena in the beginning was because she was sent to prison and was a criminal, he didn't know her past and that she was actually betrayed by the person who raised her. Celaena was just another criminal in his eyes.
Now, when Celaena, Chaol, and Dorrian are all living in the castle and the competition is going on, I thought that Chaol wasn't necessarily reminding Celaena she is Adarlan's Greatest Assassin, but reminding himself. Because, he, as Captain of the Guard, should not be developing feelings for someone who has done things that are against the law (What would that say about his judgment as the Captain? If the criminal has a pretty face then all crimes are forgotten?).
Now I did find it irritating when he would reject Celaena (*cough* the ball *cough*) but again I thought it was all to protect his title, I mean he gave up his title of "Lord" and likes being the Captain, I just don't think he wants to lose it. (It's all about what your title is back in those times)
And it said in the book that Chaol has never killed anyone by his own hand. The first time he ever killed anyone is at the end of the book, that's why he is so distraught and doesn't carry his sword at the end of the novel.
Hopefully in the second novel Chaol will treat Celaena differently, now that she's the King's Champion. (Not that he was mean to her the entire novel.)
(Though I really don't want these romances to ruin Chaol and Dorrian's friendship.)

Melissa That's the thing with love triangles isn't it, you want the girl to end up with a certain guy but if the guys were friends in the beginning you don't want a girl to come between them.

Always the case - and I feel that's so slack on the guys. I mean, they had such a concrete friendship to begin with, and you'd hate for it to be ruined because of one girl. I've seen this in so many YA books, and it's so sad. I hope Chaol and Dorian's friendship remains strong throughout the books :D

They could fight it out...but I have a feeling Chaol would win hands-down. Or he'd let Dorian win. So either way it wouldn't be a fair fight! I agree with WordlesslyAmazed; suck it up boys and work things out. Don't let it ruin your friendship.

Dorian needs a girl with spunk who can put him in his place. That's why Dorian and Nehemia, for me, are such a good match. She'd keep his ego in check!

Chaol needs someone who understand his loyal and strong nature - the emotion behind the stoic mask - as well as someone who teaches him how to live, how to have a little fun and to live life. Celaena makes him smile and brings out the happier side of him.

That's true - I think (if they ever were to) there would need to be a lot more development for it to be possible. As things stand now, they're barely acquaintances. Nehemia is closest to Celaena out of everyone, and she seems to be a strong independent young woman who would be opposed to marrying quickly or for the sake of political convenience.

Michelle (misah) | 14 comments Yeah, I'd be devastated if this would be the end...too sad. We'll have at least four years of waiting, longing, long reading-nights and discussions :-)
I am looking forward to the Chaol and Dorian-friendship in Book 3.
I think Chaol will become an even more interesting character - not only in a romantic way, but regarding the fate of Adarlan and regarding Dorian, Celeana and their secrets he'll have to keep (I really hope, Dorian tells him about his magic and Chaoll will be a supporting friend to him)

Sarvy | 14 comments ^Agreed! I realized that I'm already exhausted of the whole Team Chaol/Team Dorian. It's like "Hey guys! What about their friendship!? =(" I hope their friendship gets fleshed out in the later books cause I feel like ever since they met Celaena, they've been rather cold/distant from each other =\

Or at least they need to have a sit down chat about where they both stand in regards to her. Stop the misunderstandings and the jealousy! Although you could argue that would make the story boring and realistic =P

Allie | 31 comments I agree! I would love to see more Dorian and Chaol friendship. I hope they get some time together in book 3 :)

To be fair, that was before she found out the truth of the situation. SO...it's not like she has a good track record of friends who didn't lie and deceive her.

Sophie (warpedline) | 6 comments For all the people saying Chaol was too judgemental on Celaena at first (well, through most of the first book)

Even if it's wrong to be judgemental, i think he had a point.

Say, if a murderer had just been released from jail, and was now coming to live with you, you would be wary of them, would you not? You wouldn't bother asking them why they killed the person because honestly- they KILLED someone- and you would probably be terrified. Chaol doesn't ask about her background or reasons or whatever, and Celaena acts so cocky anyway- he had every right to think she enjoyed killing people, and thus, he would treat her as a criminal.

I think Chaol is amazing. He reminds me so much of Sam, and I love how he doesn't fall for Celaena straight away. How he gradually lets her break down his walls, rather than insta-love like with Dorian. There's just something about him.
I really don't like pushy, needy guys (Like Dorian, sometimes) that kind of pine after a girl. I like it when a man can do things himself, but how he will go that extra mile to show a girl that he feels like he needs her.

So yeah. Team Chaol and *sob* Team Sam.

@H99 - I have to agree. Celaena is an enigma - to everyone. She has a reputation as one of the best assassins ever, has already proven herself to be capable of besting other skilled fighters, has taken on a rather gruesome and horrible job for the king and everyone knows that she'd rather be anywhere but at the palace.

Therefore it totally makes sense that any person of good sense would be judgmental and/ cautious before pursuing a friendship or, in Chaol's case, a relationship with her.
