UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Why do you read? To escape? To learn? To pass the time? What's in it for you?

I love to read! The only time I don't enjoy it is when I feel forced to read something I don't want to read, or if I am not feeling well. Most of my reading is escapist, by and large. However, I view reading as an educational endeavor as well, even when I'm reading escapist literature. Through reading a story, I can get a view of someone else's life and their world. That expands my own understanding outside of my own world and view of life. Long answer.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Long answer.... Great answer!

The reason I chose this question is that lately I've not been feeling well, which means more down time which means more reading time. That's a good thing, especially when it's my main source of enjoyment.

Escapist reading is my preference. I read cookbooks when I need to, or educational materials if I must, but I don't get the same pleasure that I get from spending a few days being seduced by a Highland laird, or being mated by a vampire.... Those that give me a chance to dream, that let me go places I'd not otherwise get to go.... those are my favorites.

I think that reading is one of the pleasures that you can indulge in when you aren't physically able to do anything else. It takes you out of your physical discomfort as well.

I normally read more prolifically when I'm sick. It's just when my eyes/head is bothering me and the dizziness is bad that it's hard to read. But I have to be honest and admit that reading was a defense mechanism when things were tough and I needed an escape, and it made me even more of a voracious reader through positive reinforcement.

Oh and yes....reading romance or a good fantasy/action novel is definitely more fulfilling than reading a textbook!

PepperP0t i enjoy the other worlds and people of reading. (unless its something I have to read then it is no fun, its just words). Anytime is the perfect time to read.

Megan (thebookhunter) | 21 comments I guess you could say I am an escapest but I just enjoy emmersing myself into the lives of the characters. What type of reading it is has a lot to do with what I read. As you say Danielle; cookbooks are more educational and not generally as fun to read. However if I am reading a historical or paranormal I want something that is completely different than my life and something that would never happen (unless time travel is real and I just not thinking so). That is when I just want to be entertained. If I go contemp, I want to be entertained here as well but I also want to live vicariously through the characters in a 'what if that was me' senerio (generally) and that is more escapist.

That is a really long answer to say that basicall I like to be entertained by books. But def not pass the time, it goes way to fast when I read, lol.

Andrea Jackson (paperbackdiva) | 181 comments I love escapist reading, romance, paranormal, science fiction. That's the vast majority of my reading. My goal is relaxation and entertainment. But I read some non-fiction in topics that interest me. I read a lot of books on writing. I like some history for research. I like some science books written for the layman. When I was in high school, I remember I had to have something, anything, to read in the bathroom. I'm not quite that bad anymore.

Jenny | 39 comments Why do I read?
Well I read the newpapers or magazine to learn about something and keep myself in the loop of what is happening around me locally, nationally and internationally.

Reading for work well unforunately is just something that needs to happen and I do what I need to do. I don't have to do a lot of reading for work thankfully.

But books they are my drug of choice, like a junkie that gets sent on a trip from taking whatever they are hooked on, well I'm hooked on books. (I had a friend refer to me as her book pusher) I get to see the highlands of Scotland, or the hustle of New York or Altanta, or the outback of Australia. Books give me that chance to see all these things based on the description of what the author is telling me, but I can picture it in my head.
I love my movies and tv shows, but they don't give me the chance to let my imagination run and see these characters in my head.
They are my escape from the stresses of real like and let be (at least in my head) that kick ass heroine.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish YES! Books are an addiction for me, too! My drug of choice! And there are so many ways to get my fix.... Historical, contemporary, erotic, paranormal... All give me a high in one way or another! They help me leave the chaos of the real world behind and give me peace, for as long as I'm lost in the story.

Jenny | 39 comments You are so right UniquelyMoi. What I read will totally depend on what appeals to me at that moment. And allows me to get sweeped into the lives of the characters. I think that's why I tend to like the PNR, CR, UF and action novels. I don't tend to read horrors, or classics or even Oparah's Book Club stuff. Nothing wrong with those just not what appeals to me.

Jessica (studioeastrat) | 511 comments I read to escape the world around me and I read because it is the way I deal with stress. I am a pretty cool cat when it comes to real life situations but, I have really strong emotions about what I am reading most of the time. I think that, that is the way that I deal with the stress of real life and getting all hot and bothered about what I am reading is a safe way for me to get rid of stress from the real world.

I could not agree more. Reading for me is the best way to unwind after a busy day. Its so relaxing , letting my imagination take me to all the places the author describes. I love it , most of the woman and some of the men in my family are the same way. We all love our stories.

Some people have crack. Some people have whiskey. Some people have donuts. I have books. Sigh! Well, and chocolate!

Sunny☼ (sunny2) | 146 comments Escapism is definately numero uno, entertainment two, mood enhancer number three( unfailingly I'm in a better mood after reading) but also curiosity number four. Especially when reading a series. What happened to this plot line, that character, as time passed and so on. That is what draws me back to a book or to a series time after time..curiosity.

Gwen (gwenk) | 161 comments I've always read for escapism and I still do. The fact that I can escape to another world for a few hours and get a little relief from the heavy things in the world is wonderful. Great characters, situations, interesting locales and a good story always draw me in. Authors do some really great research and that is always a way to learn something new, which I love! :)

Yeah. I love when I can learn something new from a book, because the author took the time to do some research on their subject.
