Please could you remove 'Portraits', 'The Blending of Two', and 'Private Moments' from 'Charlotte Frost's books' on my author page. They're by a different Charlotte Frost, not me.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments Done. Your author page should now be accurate.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments Now, I have a question for other librarians about the stories I just moved. I found similar works by a "Charlotte^^Frost" and moved there; I think they should be deleted but wanted to check before erasing book data.

At the very least the images uploaded as book covers are just the web page banner and should go.

Reason I am sure should be deleted is that while the works have links to read online, I do not see any download links for an ebook or any links to print edition. So, I am thinking is online fanfiction versus published work. Site hosting stories says " archives" and everything seems to be for online reading.

Only reason I hesitate, descriptions do mention being published in some fanzines I was not familiar with. If the fanzines something okay to be on goodreads, maybe stories are part of another work?

As online only reads, sure I know the answer but not going to go around deleting books without checking. This fanfiction certainly not book length. Librarian adding was adding other fanfiction. Isn't the general rule that to be considered a published ebook it needs to be downloadable in ebook form versus only available to read online?

The "bookcovers" that all looked alike to me and were taken from website banner:
Convalescing by Charlotte Frost on Convalescing
Private Moments by Charlotte Frost on Private Moments
The Blending of Two by Charlotte Frost on The Blending of Two …possibly headed into intellectual property issues as pretty sure all the Star Trek images belong to Paramount, Pocket Books and the widow Roddenberry (they're probably looser with fanfiction versus commercial use but still do not look like bookcovers to me)

No, nothing you did wrong. Whoever entered the "books" typed in you as the author ignoring the popup about authors with same names.

I know authors have librarian status over their own books; but, there are a few edits blocked from doing to prevent stuff like overwriting book covers, deleting books already shelved by members, etc.

If more like this show up on your author page, can always post here again. Or try to edit to change author name. Where ^ is a space, you are "Charlotte^Frost" and the author of the Star Trek fanfiction is "Charlotte^^Frost"—that will move the book versus deleting if it let's you edit the author field. Not your responsibility and perfectly okay to just post here; but, you can try if you like.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments Okay Paula.

For the next time I encounter, is it policy that works and articles that can be read online only (versus downloading in ebook format) don't belong as books on goodreads? (I'll keep an eye out to see if Rivka takes down web banner used as cover).

Books In Bloom (booksinbloom) | 3 comments Can you tell me how to move the other books from this profile?
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

Her only book is Just Breathe. The ^^.. does that mean spaces or do we actually enter the symbols. Thanks.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments ^ means spaces. See http://www.goodreads.com/author/simil... to tell if one of the other Heather Allens should be the author.

So long as not a goodreads author, you can "edit data" for the author profile, click "similar names" righthand side and it will show all the likely suspects. (Not the same as similar authors; have to be editing profile before seeing "similar names").

Editing author field to add the extra space will move the books to author Heather^^Allen profile.

See disambiguating authors in manual at http://www.goodreads.com/librarian_ma...

The genres of those books are different enough that some might even belong to a third Heather but I'm not familiar with any of them to know for sure.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments I'm a bit confused, too. Maybe someone could lock this thread so more author profile book problems would go on a new thread? I get a little nervous once someone says staff or Rivka handling and thread gets added to. Don't want to leave requests hanging; but, don't want to interfere with staff edits or decisions either. (i know that has to be staff for Mr. Denney's problem because regular librarians don't get around changing profiles once claimed).

And, Banjomike, what do you think about my original question...if a work is only available for online reading on a dedicated web site/page, does it get a goodreads entry as being a published ebook?

message 10: by Banjomike (last edited Jan 12, 2013 05:06PM) (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments Rivka+Staff == Don't touch.
In this case it might also have meant "don't discuss" which is why I queried it.

Fanfic is a problem not least because it is, by definition, using copyrighted characters and settings that belong to someone else. Usually someone successful. This thread touches on removing fanfic:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

There have been Goodreads Authors whose only works have been fanfic so it would seem that the genre is not banned, just not encouraged. But any fanfic that uses cover art (or chunks of text) from the official books/movies would be putting GR into a difficult position.

Online-only reading is NOT Goodreads material. Available as PDF/epub, probably is. Maybe.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments These are definitely online only. I wasn't wanting to delete because fanfiction, but because not published in ebook or any downloadable formats.

I'll keep an eye out for an answer on which message(s) on this thread staff is handling; but, I am really wanting to delete those cover images that are clearly not a bookcover and needing flagging for intellectual property issues.

And the author of fanfiction has more online stories and posts that might be getting added (wrongly on the original poster's thread) if the Star Trek ones are allowed so librarian notes likely a good idea to clarify.

Personally, if I thought the fanfiction should be added on the basis a part of published anthology works in the print fanzine, I would have also made sure to add the fanzine. Odd that only online versions of stories from a hardcopy publication and not the publication itself…moot point but just odd that he online but not the hardcopy works were being added.

Stories published on site other than GR, whether downloadable or not, are usually fine. As long as they are complete works (not in-process), and not add-ons to another work ("extras").

message 13: by Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) (last edited Jan 13, 2013 07:29PM) (new)

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments What about the cover images? Not a book title, author name, or cover of some anthology they appeared in—graphic is just the web page banner.

So, should all the read-only-online stories on that fanfiction archive site and their author websites be added? Even if they read less like a story than a blog post?

Currently, no format is specified on some, ebook on others. What do we use? Ebook (I really don't think is an ebook)? Or is there an "other" we specify for online posts? Each story consisted of text on a single dedicated url page off the main website. Maybe "Online text"? It wasn't clear to me in the manual.

The covers are definitely not real covers. I see no reason to keep them.

If readers want to add individual fics, that's usually ok. But why would we make a project of adding every fic on a given archive?

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments I didn't want to make a project of it. I was just asking if all the online-only story pages were okay to add.
