Katrina Passick Lumsden (shutterbird13) | 1 comments Hello, all. Just thought I'd stop in and post since I was invited and joined and all.

Am I a masochistic reader? Well, I read all three Fifty Shades books and hated every minute of it...so that's a big yes. I grew up watching Mystery Science Theater 3000, so I guess I see the point in subjecting myself to things I think are awful. Sometimes I even enjoy it!

So basics; I'm 31, married, have a 13-year-old son, love animals and reading and writing and photography and a boatload of other stuff, and I have a mouth like a sailor, but I can generally keep it under control. I also really like spaghetti.

Rachael Hello. I'm Rachael...32 years old. I have an 11 year old daughter and a wonderful husband. I'm absolutely 100% addicted to reading.....I love all kinds of books but I'm particularly drawn to the more emotional, dark, angsty ones.

message 115: by Mo (new)

Mo (thescarletsiren) Hi all! I'm new here! I can't tell you how happy I was to stumble on to this group. I've only recently come to realize how much I LOVE angst-y emotional books. I love the happy, fluffy ones, too, but the darker books really stick with me for some reason.

When I can tear myself away from the Kindle, I am a mom of 4 and wife to one. I can't wait to get to know you all, and get some recommendations!

message 120: by Danny (new)

Danny Tyran (danny_) | 15 comments Male
37
Working at home (revision and correction of essays, thesis, papers, etc. in French only)
I wrote 3 BDSM books:
Esclave à l'entraînement
Conseil de discipline
L'enlèvement
and I am writing others. One is finished, but the publisher told me that it will probably be online only in June. :(
Native language: French (so excuse my bad English)
I am bi and SM (mainly masochist, sadist by proxy)
I once had a Master and a Mistress (his wife)
I once had a male and a female slave (separately)
I live now with Paul, my partner since 2002 and I still love him. He is a sub, but not masochistic at all. :(

For my books:
I love thrillers (Stephen Hunter, Robert Crais,...), SciFi (all the books of the old guard as Asimov, Simak, Heinlein, Masterton,...). I have already read books written by Stephen King and by Dan Brown, but I am less fond of them now.
I have read books written by French authors (from France) like Proust, Sartre, Balzac, Camus, De Beauvoir,..., and by Quebeckers like Robert Lalonde, Michel Tremblay, Agnès Guitard, Réjean Ducharme, Louis Hémon, etc.

I love hardcore BDSM stories:
Humiliator
The Good Sadist
The Story of Tol
Master's Dungeon CDE that is a collection of the books of Alex Morgan in the series Master's Dungeon
The 120 Days of Sodom and Other Writings written by Marquis de Sade
...
But I also love softer stories:
Falls Chance Ranch
Above the Dungeon and its sequel: Out of the Dungeon
Power Play: Awakening (I did not like so much the first book of the series: Resistance)

Often, I prefer male BDSM authors like Jack Brighton, Ty Marton, Alex Morgan, Jack Rowan, Kyle Stone, John Preston, David Stein,... Maybe this is because they dare to show their true SM nature more than women. Often, in women's books, the stories are more sentimental. Not that I do not like nice sentiments, but I already have these in my real life. That is why what I am looking for in books is thrill and hardcore BDSM.

But I have read women's books that were really great too. I read lately Bound: Forget me knot. The author is a woman and I still loved it. ;) I hope that there will be a sequel.

Optimist ♰King's Wench♰ Any chance your books will be available in English? My French is not good enough to read & understand the nuances sad to say. Thanks for sharing your bio. I saw where you're doing the February Alpha Dom challenge & one of your book options was Dark Soul Vol. 1. Just finished it & the Vol. 2. Edge play so you might like it; heavy mafia theme.

E (imagineas) | 2 comments I'll be honest I'm not much into the erotic books. But I do love books like SC Stephen's Thoughtless. Lol I feel left out.

Optimist ♰King's Wench♰ Estefany wrote: "I'll be honest I'm not much into the erotic books. But I do love books like SC Stephen's Thoughtless. Lol I feel left out."

Don't be. A masochistic read can be anything from sci-fy to mystery to non-fiction to erotica & all points in between. Just because you're not into romance/erotic novels doesn't mean you're not a masochistic reader. I believe Clarifina mentioned Truth in the invite email which isn't erotic at all. There might be some confusion with the name of this group & its relation to actual BDSM.

If you have about $10000 to give for a poor French writer, I could find someone to translate them. But I do not think that they will be translated soon. I am o.k. to read in English. I can make myself understood when I write (with many mistakes). But I cannot translate books. So...

For Dark Sould, it is in my list of To Read books. :) Thanks for the suggestion.

Optimist ♰King's Wench♰ Danny wrote: "I stand beside my mailbox right now. ;)"

I do hope you're wearing a jacket & maybe brought something to read, some snacks couldn't hurt, maybe a sleeping bag but not to worry it'll be there! Trust me. ;)

message 137: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, since since I've already slipped a toe or two into the water, I guess it's time to swim!

I'm Jen, age 41, from Montreal, Canada. E-books and audiobooks have brought me back to reading for pleasure (I was a voracious reader as a child, always had my nose in a book or magazine).

I like stories that teach you something about yourself, tales that have a deeper meaning beyond the mundane requirements of plot, and narratives that put character development at the centre of the world the author has created.

i dislike long descriptive passages (especially about the weather!), plot twists that make no sense or seem to wrap things up in a nice little bow, and characters who don't grow or learn at all, or who seem to move artificially in directions imposed by other characters or by the author. I'm currently experimenting with a series (Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan) in an effort to try something completely new. I also tend to have multiple books on the go simultaneously (which drives my colleagues crazy!)

I look forward to great conversations :)

@Jennifer-not jealous. At all. Where the hell are you Antarctica? -40????
