Tattered Cover Book Store (tatteredcover) | 8 comments Welcome to our "change your links" revolution. We're so glad to have you on board. The next step is to invite your friends on Goodreads to join us in changing their links too. Our links movement on facebook now has over 500 members. We've got some catching up to do.

K.S.R. (kareyshane) Pretend you're telling a kindergartener (me!) how to change the links. I still don't understand!

Hi Karey, I'm Jackie and I'm part of the Tattered Cover GoodReads team. My eyes crossed when I first tried to understand this too (I'm a recovering technophobe), but it turns out it's actually very easy.

First, go to your home page and click on "hi Karey" that's up in the righthand corner. You'll get a small drop down menu--click on "my account". That will open a page with a lot of file tab looking things. The very last one is "book links", click on that. The screen that takes you to has a list on the right hand side that says "customize my links" and shows you what links GoodReads set up for you. There are arrow keys next to each of those links allowing you to move them up or down on the list or remove them completely (special note, Amazon has a contract with GR and can't be removed. The closest you can get is keeping it at the bottom of your list). Then, if you want to add some of your local shops, etc., check the list on the right hand side of the page labled "popular links". You can just click the "add" key and it will move your selection over to your customized list (you'll have to adjust where you want it--it's a bit clunky, but worth it when it means more attention for so many of the great independent or at least smaller stores out there). If you can't find a store you want to add on that list, there is a way to add your own, which is VERY cool.

I hope this helps! Thanks for joining!

Michael (mkindness) Over at www.booksonthenightstand.com we've always linked to Library Thing because they were more indie friendly and had a lot of options, but GoodReads is getting better at this. It may be time for Ann and me to reconsider our links! I especially like that you can change where your pages link to!

We're big fans of your site here at TC. Thanks for joining and helping "the cause"!

Michael (mkindness) I've run into a problem with the links, maybe someone can think of a workaround?

You can customize the order of the sales links for your account. But when you link to a book, you're linking to the general info page of the book, not your view, so it defaults to having Amazon first.

Can anyone think of a way to link to books on Goodreads and have it be your account view?

Just a thought...does anyone know if Authors have any control over the links for their books? Perhaps getting them to change their links is the way to go.

Michael,

We looked into this a while back and learned that the customization of links is always user-specific, so I'm afraid the answer is no, you can't do anything about what links other people see. But, if enough of us move Amazon to the bottom of our lists (you can't actually remove them altogether), perhaps we can convince Goodreads and other sites that it might be worthwhile to decrease their dependency on Amazon and stick to the independent spirit that got them here in the first place.

Thanks for helping to send the message!

Michael (mkindness) I also emailed GR to see if they could do anything. Don't expect so, but thought it didn't hurt to ask!
