For those of you who have read LOTR, if you were forced to read one or the other, which one of the two would you want to read?

I obviously haven't read LOTR, so I can't really comment, except to say that I don't think anything could be better than The Hobbit.

I've read both, all in order. I can't imagine reading one without the other, but I was 12 & 13 at the time of first reads. They go together so well.
I prefer the writing style of LOTR, but as to which I would prefer to read at a given moment, it depends on my mood, and how much time I have on my hands. LOTR really needs to be read 1 volume after another after another.
I would read LOTR. I think it is because it really is a whole world of it's own. I have several editions. A leather bound edition, and an illistrated edition that matches the Hobbit edition I have for our groups icon this month.
I would choose LOTR, like Fishpond because it's more in depth. I'm not as into the good-guys-and-dragons fairy story as I am into the power of the mythology, and the stories of Men and Elves.
If I were stuck on a desert island with one or the other, I'd choose LOTR, but in general, I love the Hobbit too much to abandon it.
The Hobbit is great for the ADHD crowd because each chapter is almost a story in and of itself. I read it aloud each year to my students. I also think The Hobbit was written to be heard. LOTR is a wonderfully woven tale of fantasy that no "reader" should leave this world without experiencing. If you read fantasy often, I'd dive into the Trilogy (followed by Nine Princes in Amber-Zelazny and The Eye of the World extravaganza- Jordan). If you are new to fantasy, go with The Hobbit. It never disappoints. Any news on the movie version?
I would choose The Hobbit but mainly because when I tried to read the first LOTR I couldn't get through it, even though I love the movies so much I just couldn't get through the first book.
Angie wrote: "What do you think of the movie being made into two movies?"It depends how they're going to distribute the story. I've read the Hobbit 8 times, but not for a while, so I don't remember exactly what happens. I do remember enough to wonder where a good place to divide would be, and I can't think of one.
If you look on imdb.com, they have a cast list that includes Galadriel, Legolas, and Arwen, even though they never appear in the book.
I think right after Beorn's house would make a good stopping point. You get Gollum, Wargs, a cool rescue and then bread and honey. Yummmmmm
