Is this group ever active? Do you ever talk about the books she writes as Barbara Michaels?

Hi Cassie - I think I was the last person to send any quuestions to this group. I am personally obsessed with the Amelia Peabody series. I have only read one book by Barbra Michaels. Which of her series is your favorite?
I like the Georgetown Series best, I think. But I love most of her Barbara Michaels stand alone books too. I'm not a big fan of Amelia Peabody. Not sure, just never got into them. I wish she would write more as Barbara Michaels. I was hoping this was a more active group. I joined a Barbara Michaels group and it wasn't active at all.
I love the Amelia Peabody series, too (especially "Crocodile on the Sandbank" and some of the more recent ones with Ramses and Nefret). I must confess, I've never read any of her Barbara Michaels books--what are they about?
I love both Barbara Michaels and Elizabeth Peters and was very disappointed when she stopped writing as BM. I do love Elizabeth Peters though, but wish she would write another Vicky Bliss novel!! That was my favorite series and the Amelia Peabody one has just taken over. In the beginning, EP would alternate and Amelia Peabody with another one, be it Jaqueline Kirby or Vicky Bliss or a random novel. Then it just became all Peabody, all the time. I imagine it is becuase her publishers made her focus on that, but i am disappointed just the same.
I love the Amelia Peabody series, but now that she and Emerson are getting up in age, I am seriously hoping that she turns back to Vicky!
No I was not kidding...I guess I'm out of the loop...I thought Babara Michaels was a romance writer...duh. Of course, when you 'don't read books unless there's a dead body in them' as my son says, you don't pick up a lot of information.
Barbara Michaels is NOT *said with mock disgust* a romance writer. Her books have a tad bit of romance but they are definitely not romance books. She writes mysteries-many with a supernatural twist.
I keep hoping she will write one more book to let Ameila and Emerson take sail and explain what Ramses and Nefret's baby turns out to be.
idk what gender Nefret and Ramses's baby was, but I know that he/she (sorta) plays a role in another EP series . . .;)
Do you know which series? Also - I wanted to tell you - I tried one of the Rhyes Bowen - Molly Murphey books and I really liked it. Written in the same time period so you kind of pick up some information about living at that time. You might enjoy them also.
I'll look into those!the series is the Vicky Bliss series. I don't want to say any more, because it might ruin the surprise @ the end of the series.
Nefret and Ramses had twins, didn't they? And Barbara Micheals is in the romance section of my library...so sorry!!!Have you guys read any Joan Hess? She writes 2 series, 1 about a small town in Ark...Maggody and another about a mother and daughter in a college town (Claire Malloy)...both VERY funny! The last Claire Malloy takes them all to Egypt and there is a credit to Elizabeth Peters in the book!
hmmm . . . no, I haven't read them.yes, I did read Laughter of Dead Kings! I liked all of the connections to other EP books.
If you love Amelia you should try these two...I loved them!Silent in the Grave
Silent in the Sancuary
Deanna Raybourn
EXCELLENT

What did you want to chat about?"just curious. never been in a book group, let alone in a chat room of a book group. thought i'd try it out. unfortunately i'm about to leave for awhile, so i don't have time for much more than this. maybe later. thanks for responding!
Heehee...we are as active as a group for an 83 year old writer can be...she has slowed down on her writing lately!
I'm in a group dedicated to Norah Lofts who has been dead for quite some time and that group is pretty darn active.

Hmm... she's NOTHING like Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters... "A Wayside Tavern" is really good. She also wrote several books about the English Queens. She wrote "Concubine" about Anne Boleyn, and "The King's Pleasure" about Catherine. A lot of her books tell the stories of people who live in a certain place and she spans several generations. Does that make sense?
Yes - sounds intersting, I will start with A Wayside Tavery. I love books that take place in a the past. Thank you.
You can also try "The Town House" which is the first in her "House Trilogy" which is popular among her fans.
I know this isn't really related to the topic, but there is a part in Seeing a Large Cat I just recently re-read. I was reading the Manuscript H section where Nefret bandaged Ramses's rib wound, when I came across something Ramses said: "J'ai fait mieux depuis"I was wondering if anyone else had caugt the absolutely adorable meaning of this ;)

T..."I personally love the Amelia Peabody series, and I don't care that Amelia and Emerson are getting up on age! I don't think it was her publishers who made her focus on Amelia; I think she just loved doing it. Most writers, who are actually good writers, try to follow their hearts and not their publisher's ideas. I'm a writer, so I know this. Elizabeth Peters even proves this: For "Curse of the Pharoahs" and "The Mummy Case" she was told by her publisher she had to stop picking mythical names like "Lion in the Valley" and pick regular names. But after those two books (Curse and Mummy), she switched back to names like "Deeds of the Disturber" and such. It just shows how she mostly follows her own heart, not her publisher's. Also, I think Amelia is more interesting. (Just my opinion!) For one, I'm an unofficial Egyptologist, so the series really attracts me. Also, I'm more interested in the Victorian era than modern times. I like Peter's references to Jane Austen's works and such. And I love the long romance between Amelia and Emerson. I think the characters are much more colorful than in her other books, and the series draws me in more. In her other books, it's the feisty female and the ignorant male all the time. In the Amelia books, there's a wide range of different characters, and new ones are always appearing. The series is very long, so we get to know and love the characters really well.

I agree, Brenna. I'd like a little vignette for between CotS and CotP, or somewhere that fits in time wise with early CotP. I miss the interactions with servants that disappeared as time went on (quite historically accurately, too, but I wish they could have kept on regardless.) I think any series has a bit more lightheartedness available to it in the pre-WWI era, which also makes me yearn for a bit more earlier settings.
Yes. I adored the servants, Kate! Didn't you love...um...Gosh, can't I remember his name? Um....I don't know, I'm having a mind blank and I'm too lazy to get up and look at the book....The one who accompanied them to Egypt during "The Mummy Case".

He was very funny. But my personal favorite is Gargery, The Emersons' butler. What a hoot he was!!
