Hi all, my name's Jen and I started this group because I love 'foodie' books, collecting recipes, and baking.

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi all,
I'm Wendy and its partly Jen's fault I found a love for foodie books. (Hehe) I too, love baking and cooking.

J.A. Belfield (jabelfield) | 24 comments Hey all. I'm here because I love *eating* food *snort* and because Jen is awesome so how could I say no? If I'm honest, my man: Mr B cooks a whole heap more than I do, but that's mostly because he comes home to find I haven't cooked thanks to my head being stuck in my laptop all day long. Besides, I prefer baking to cooking. :o)

My hubs cooks more than I do too lol. I'm mostly a baker.

Yep, cakes and cookies is my thing. :D

Wall-to-wall books - wendy Hi - I am ItsJUSTme - Wendy (not the same Wendy as above :-)
I have a book blog here - http://wall-to-wall-books.blogspot.com/
I do review a few cookbooks here and there.
I actually do not like to cook or bake!
But I love cookbooks! I guess it just makes it more fun.
I also love to read fiction about cafe's, coffee chops, diners, bakeries, etc.

message 13: by Anna (new)

Anna Hi! I am so glad to be here. I'm Anna! My hubby is also the main cook in my family, but I do like to bake some when I get the chance. I'm hoping to get some good recipe and ideas here, and of course- get some great foodie book suggestions. :)

message 20: by David (new)

David Ottenstein (dwotter) | 2 comments Hello everybody. I joined because I recently got into baking. I've been cooking almost my whole life, but baking really seemed beyond me until just recently. I remember one of the comments I got after trying to make a chocolate cake, someone (in my family, no less!) said "That cake was so dry I'll be farting dust for a week."

I think I'm getting better. At least my wife is honest about the successes and the failures.

Hi David, Welcome to the group! Don't worry, I'm sure we've all had less than appetizing results here and there...I know I have!

Amanda | 15 comments Hello Everyone,
I looked over the introductions initially so I figured I'd introduce myself. I'm Amanda, been friends with Jen for years and like some of you my husband does the bulk of the cooking and baking (thanks to his mom's recipes). I'm a great taste tester :) I'm enjoying reading all the comments and cooking/baking ideas. Hopefully I can share some of our recipes and someone else can enjoy them too.

message 25: by Jim (new)

Jim Wills (strabaneboy) | 7 comments Greetings, Jen and all,

I've been cooking and baking just about all my life. My mother was an excellent baker but, sadly, a horrible cook, so my brothers and I had to defend ourselves.

For the past twelve years, I've been baking and cooking in a wood-fired oven that I built brick by brick. In fact, in good weather (not just yet where I am), the kitchen oven rarely gets used at all. Turned pro ten years ago.

My latest fave is Farinata from Genoa: easy and quick to make and very tasty, plus adaptable. I've got literally tons of bread and savory recipes to share.

Welcome, Welcome!!

I never officially welcomed you to the group Amanda...shame on me ;)
But I'm glad you joined!

message 28: by Judith (new)

Judith Post | 116 comments Jim, you turned pro?? My daughter, the nurse, has a significant other who's a chef and his friend is a bread maker. Supplies a lot of the restaurants in the city. Are you one or the other? I love the foodtv show Extra Virgin--the husband made his own outdoor, stone oven. Made me jealous. I've never heard of faranita. What is it? A bread?

message 29: by Jim (new)

Jim Wills (strabaneboy) | 7 comments Judith,

The pro part is on the baking side. I like to cook, but two of my brothers are pros on the chef side.

Farinata (called Socca across the border in France) is a bit difficult to classify. There's no rising agent, though, so it can't be called a bread. It's more like a giant pancake or thick crepe. It's quick, easy to make and tasty. I'll post a recipe here or email it if you like.

message 30: by Judith (new)

Judith Post | 116 comments I love crepes. And when the boys are here, we make huge Sunday brunches. A recipe would great! If you post it here, everyone can share. Would it go with a frittata?

message 31: by Jim (new)

Jim Wills (strabaneboy) | 7 comments Sure, with frittata would be fine, or by itself with a bit of tomato jam. Chick pea flour can be found in health food stores or bulk suppliers. It can go off pretty quickly, so store any leftover flour, airtight, in the freezer. There are many variants on the web, some with sage, some with Kalamatas, etc.

Farinata, by Mark Bittman, New York Times

1 cup chickpea flour
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon, at least, ground black pepper
4 to 6 tablespoons really good olive oil
½ large onion, thinly sliced, optional
1 tablespoon fresh rosemary leaves, chopped, optional
If using, sweat the onion and rosemary in oil first.

1. Heat oven to 450 degrees. Put a well-seasoned or nonstick 12-inch pizza pan or cast-iron skillet in oven (or line a cake pan with oiled parchment). Sift chickpea flour into a bowl; add salt and pepper; then slowly add 1 cup lukewarm water, whisk or use an immersion blender to eliminate lumps. Stir in 2 tablespoons olive oil. Cover, and let sit while oven heats, or as long as 12 hours. Batter should be about the consistency of heavy cream.

2. If using onion and rosemary, stir them into batter. Pour 2 tablespoons oil into heated pan, and swirl to cover pan evenly. Pour in batter, and bake 12 to 15 minutes, or until pancake is firm and edges set. Heat broiler, and brush top of farinata with 1 or 2 tablespoons of oil if it looks dry.

3. Set the farinata a few inches away from broiler for a few minutes, just long enough to brown it spottily. Cut it into wedges, and serve hot, or at least warm.

Yield: 4 to 6 appetizer servings.

Judith Post | 116 comments Thank you, Jim!! My Friday night friend is allergic to wheat and milk. When it's my Friday to cook, I try to make fun things for her that our husbands would like, too. This would be perfect!

message 33: by Jim (new)

Jim Wills (strabaneboy) | 7 comments Cheers, Judith. I think you'll find the flavor unusual and quite interesting. Let me know how you get on.

message 34: by Judith (new)

Judith Post | 116 comments Thanks. I've already bought everything for this Friday--I'm making a fruit stuffed pork loin and a sweet potato casserole, but I'll remember it for next time.

message 37: by Tina (new)

Tina Culbertson (tinaculbertson) I just joined so...hello! I have been writing a foodie type blog for a few years and recently (about year ago) started a site called Novel Meals. I write reviews of book and cook or bake something inspired from the reading. It's been a fun outlet.

I look forward to visiting others in this group and mkaing like minded friends.

I've been a slacker, though. Still haven't completed the yeast bread challenge, but I've been trying out tons of new recipes for everything else!

Omg! Do you have a Shiba Inu!!? <3

One of your blog headers looks like a shiba and one looks like a shiba mix.

message 43: by Tina (new)

Tina Culbertson (tinaculbertson) Yes! The book blog has our 9 year old male, Kobe, and the food one has our 11 year old cream shiba Aja.
Oh my...they RULE the house!

They are both full shibas and both are from a rescue group.

I always love finding other shiba people because most will look at you strange when you say what breed they are lol.

Judith Post | 116 comments Went to your blogs and loved both. I just love the idea of a food blog that's tied to novels. I always enjoy it when an author puts food in a story.

I just checked him out. So cute! I love the breed but they can be so stubborn. We get the same reaction when someone asks what breed of dog they are..."a shiba inu" is met with a blank stare and sometimes "a whata whata???"

Haha yeah I get the blank stare a lot too. And they are definitely stubborn!! And I swear Kirby has selective hearing.

Although he does listen to me a lot more than my husband hehe. We take him out to our fenced yard through the basement and some days hubs can call for him for a few minutes before kirb will finally decide to come back upstairs. He always follows me upstairs with no problems. Lol.
