I'll get this out and start on it tonight. I've been kind of leery of it but this is going to give me that kick in the pants that I need to get started on it.
Me too..on both counts. I'll start tonight..and I've had reservations, but the movie coming out (and my brother reading it) gave me the pants kickin'! ;) Clink! Here's hoping it's a page-turner!~
I certainly hope so. The Twilight books aren't the worst that I've ever read (I've only read the first two) but I struggled to get through New Moon.
Good to hear. I neglected to get this started, however I did manage to find it and select a bookmark for it!! Other than that, I couldn't keep my eyes open last night and was in bed by 9:30!
I've read it, it's an okay, fun read. Definitely better than Twilight. But I have to question Meyer's weird idea of love.
I'll have to read a bit more to see if I can gather what you're getting at Fatin? So far, at least in my estimation...she's just trying to get back to them...I'm only on like page 120. And...I guess if Twilight is any indication...she's got a wee bit of a strange idea of love...:)
Only 20 pages or so in, but first impression seems to be better than the two Twilight novels that I've read. I was disappointed to see that she went with first person again. I thought that the Prologue, which wasn't in first person, had better flow than when she writes in first person.
May not want to read until you hit about page 40:)It actually confuses me in some parts...because she talks in first person..then she switches to third person when she's talking about Melanie...then switches back to first person, but it's still Melanie...it took me a bit to get used to it, and I still have to pay attention at times when they are "having a conversation" as to who is saying what...BUT..saying that, I do think this is better written than Twilight. Hmm..now I'm curious..which came first? I'll have to go check that out.
...and I wanna know more about the 'Kevin event' :)
Making some progress here. I agree that the switching back and forth while staying in first person is a bit muddled at times, but I think that that does help to illustrate that they are two individuals inhabiting the same mind and body.Overall, I am getting used to the first person thing again. It always takes me a bit to ease into this style of book and now that I'm in the groove, so to speak, it's going a bit more smoothly now. I am enjoying the storyline thus far and my overall impression is similar to other experiences that I've had with Meyer: great overall concept, a bit too much on the sappy romance side for me (but I'm not exactly her target audience), and a few side concepts that she uses to flesh out the details of her novels that I find to be a little bit of a stretch. I do like the writing in this novel a bit better than what I have read thus far with the Twilight series, I feel that she has developed in her craft.
*What I mean about the wonky details that make me roll my eyes a bit are: (view spoiler)
I agree. With the juvenile (your 'spoiler' explanation) bit...not so much really even getting the romance thing here...I'm sure it's coming...I feel it, it's there, she's foreshadowing...and (view spoiler)I was on a mission to see which one she wrote first the other day, but never made it that far...So was this AFTER the Twilight series?
It does push me through however, and I like the story line much more than I thought I would..I'm not all that big on "Alien" books. But...I do think she (meaning Miss Meyer) could have been a tad more imaginative when coming up with the alien type body or "souls"...instead of (view spoiler)
...and I like Jeb! He's great. My house MY rules!~
As far as I have been able to discern, The Host was written post-Twilight. I also can't figure out (and maybe I just haven't gotten to any scenes that are violent or steamy enough) how this is really any more adult than the Twilight series. Being that this has been hailed as her move to adult fiction. Seems pretty much the same to me.
I didn't realize that. They are all in our library's YA section:) I agree...unless it gets really different from here on out, I would say so far has been less violent (and certainly less steamy) than Twilight.
Ok..so far I've figured out she wrote it post Twilight...and..I don't know where you are currently...and I don't want to spoil things...but, ugh! Getting a wee bit annoyed..then I have fun, then it's compelling...then I'm annoyed and bored again...it's quite roller-coaster with my emotions, but not for the reasons you'd think! ;) But IT IS a most interesting love triangle...or should I say Quadrangle??? !!! :D
..and on page 440ish...I'm still not seeing how this is any more 'adult' in nature than the Twilight series...unless I'm supposed to count the fact that there are a ton more characters in this book over the age of 17???
I'm sure that I'm quite a bit behind you. I'm on 122 of 619 in the hardback version. Somewhere in Chapter 13.Oh, and if it's about mostly adults, then it must be for adults, right?
Finally finished this one, I did like it. I really didn't have a problem with the slower parts, there was always something going on that was compelling enough to keep me reading it.
Great! I liked it too. I did feel it was slow in parts, but I was always interested...so that means she did a good job, in my opinion. It wasn't my typical read..but it was nice to step outta the box!
It is THICK! I was a little put-off in the past by the sheer size of this book. But...it was good. If you're at the half-way point..push through, I think you'll like where it goes! Don't give up! And, in my opinion it goes a bit faster toward the end! Have fun!
Did you see that there is a challenge involved with this book and the soon to be released film? You could win a Kindle Fire HD by just doing a couple of things.
Yup. I went with a friend a few days ago. The book wasn't exactly action packed...and neither was the movie. It followed the book pretty closely, but it was kind of boring. We were the only two in the theater, if that's any indication. :)

I've heard it's better written than her Twilight series..so, we shall see.
If you've already read it and want to comment, please do so (please mark any spoilers! Thanks:)
...and we're off!
