jaxnsmom | 8339 comments It's a Love / Hate Thing!

February…Valentine’s Day…love is in the air…or is that the chemical plant down by the river?

The February Toppler is one week long, and will start on February 9th at noon EST and end at noon EST on February 16th. Points will accumulate for your team, and there will be various badges available to each team, with a main badge for the winning team.

A few rules:
1. Books must be started and finished in this time period to qualify for points.

2. You may read any format - paperback, hardcover, ebook, or audiobook for the last two use the page numbers on the first edition that comes up on the GR page.

3. A minimum of 200 pages must be read to earn points. This can be accomplished with one book of 200 pages or more, OR more than one book meeting the task requirement and totaling at least 200 pages.

4. Books can only be used for one task in the Toppler, but can count toward the monthly challenge, the group theme read, and the alphabet yearly challenge if they qualify.

5. You may plan ahead and chose books for the challenge, but you are not restricted to those books. You may swap them out at will.

6. You can do as many different tasks as you want, or do the same task as often as you want.

7. There will be one discussion thread for everyone, and a reporting thread for each group.

8. All tasks are worth 10 points, unless otherwise stated.

There is no requirement to read a certain number of books, even if you only read one, you will earn points for your team! And the teams want members: fast readers, slow readers, people who read for hours on end, people who listen in the car – if you read, WE WANT YOU!

Tasks

You'd Think That People Would Have Had Enough of Silly Love Songs …apparently not. Read a book with a title that would be perfect in a love song, or a song about lust. Try and write a verse (4 lines minimum) for 5 extra points.

First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage, Then Comes Junior in a Baby Carriage Remember that chant? Read a book where everything happens in the traditional order OR where the order is mixed up.

Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Yeah Yeah Read a book where someone does something extreme in the name of love or lust. This can be awe-inspiring or disturbing.

It’s a Nice Day for a White Wedding Read a book with a wedding dress or groom on the cover OR a black evening dress or tuxedo.

If love was a storybook, we'd meet on the very first page. Read a romance book that reminds you of a fairytale. (not necessarily a retelling of a fairytale) OR a horror book that reminds you of a nightmare.

Love at First Sight
I fell in love at first sight. Sometimes, I wish I had taken a second look.
Read a book where a character falls in love at first sight OR a main character is a psychic or medium.

Love at First Bite Read a book where a human and a vampire, werewolf, shape shifter, zombie, ghost, alien, or time traveler fall in love, or lust that turns into love.

First Love Read a YA book where a main character falls in love for the first time OR Puppy Love Read a book where a main character falls in love with an adorable dog, cat, horse, pig... ☺

True Love Read a book where a main character finds their true purpose in life OR Animal Desire Read a book where a main character’s job involves animals other than pets (wildlife rescue, zoo, circus…)

The Heart Wants What the Heart Wants Read a book where a character wants something/someone they cannot obtain.

Valentine’s Day There seem to be several traditional gifts/things to do on Valentine’s Day, so how about some new traditions too?
Flowers
Traditional Read a book with a bouquet of flowers on the cover OR Nontraditional A cover with flowers in a garden or field, and let everyone enjoy nature’s beauty.
Chocolates or Candy – Why mess with a good thing? Read a book with chocolate or candy on the cover, or where they play an important part in the story.
Champagne
Traditional Read a book with champagne on the cover OR Nontraditional A cover with a cocktail or bottle of liquor on the cover, it’s a great time to get together with best friends!

Words of Love Read a romance where a character woos someone OR Love Stinks Forget the romance and read a book with some hot sex!

THE BONUS - This is worth 50 points!
Book Spine Poetry If you haven’t done this before, it’s really fun! Use three book titles that you've read during the Toppler to create a poem. Here's some help on how it works: http://www.alsc.ala.org/blog/2011/03/...
Each team member should try and come up with their own poem, and then each team will select one to represent their team.

I did one earlier this year, and was even able to use the subtitle as the title, Started Early, Took My Dog, The Fat Man: A Tale of North Pole Noir and In The Dead of Winter.

A Tale of North Pole Noir

The Fat Man
Started Early, Took My Dog
In the Dead of Winter

Oh dear, I hope this doesn't cause too much more research. MWAHAHAHAHA

jaxnsmom | 8339 comments We have teams and captains ready to go.

Introducing the two teams:

Words of Love with Captains Connie and Sam

Love Stinks with Captains Almeta and Debra

They're going to be setting up their own sign-up topics, and probably doing some recruitment. I didn't give them any guidelines, so I'd watch out for bribery, flattery, and blackmail. You know the old saying, All's fair in love and war.

This Toppler should be great fun, some of our top readers and most supportive members are leading the teams. I thank them for agreeing to be captains!

Ann (disciple45) Hitting the bookshelves today!

Shanna_redwind | 228 comments So if we have to (reluctantly) put down our own books and read books to the kids at bedtime, can we count those children's books as well? (And add them to a shorter book that we're reading to meet the page requirement?)

Janice (jamasc) | 60942 comments Ooooh, that task looks very interesting!

Yes, a great way to get all your reading to count. Just remember they'll have to meet the task.

message 9: by Ava Catherine (new)

Ava Catherine | 4257 comments I think love is in the air! Time to read that book that lifts your heart. : )
Start checking your shelves and making those golpher piles! Time to gear up for the toppler! ; )

message 10: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60942 comments Oh no! I feel the addiction taking over. To heck with work! To heck with posting rainbow badges... must scour my shelves. ;)

message 11: by AmyK (new)

AmyK (yakyma) | 1045 comments I'm holding off on picking any books until the rest of the tasks are up. Got a couple Ideas for the love songs task (as long as they don't have to be good love songs) You will all just have to put up with my silly rhyming next month Bwahahahaha!

Sounds like the kids will be getting a limited choice that week.

Amy ponders love song ideas for all the children's books in the house

Seroiusly though, if I read 10, 20 page books to Ryan that fit into one task over the course of the week, could i count them as a task? (And do I have to make up songs for all of them if i pick the love songs task?)

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

what impact does being in one team or the other have on the books we choose?

And are team scores weighted so the bogger team doesn't automatically win?

message 16: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4619 comments I'm a little confused too. If we want want to read mushy lovey books we pick one group and if we'er more inclined to reading books where the couple just want to kill each other, we pick the other one?

message 17: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4619 comments Uh oh. I just had a quick look at my books and I think I lean more toward the darker side of love. Hmm, how did that happen?

message 18: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60942 comments I could be wrong, but I suspect the names of the teams don't have anything to do with what types of books you read. But, jaxnsmom is the mastermind and will be the one to make the call.

Yes, they would count. I should make you write a song using all of the titles in the lyrics - what do you think group? ☺ You can use one title for the love song :)

Helen wrote: "what impact does being in one team or the other have on the books we choose?

None! All tasks are open to anyone. The teams are just to add to the fun.

No - having more team members doesn't mean more books will be read, as everyone's speed and time vary.

Roz wrote: "I'm a little confused too. If we want want to read mushy lovey books we pick one group and if we'er more inclined to reading books where the couple just want to kill each other, we pick the other one?"

Did the above answer your question Roz?

message 23: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8339 comments With six tasks currently posted, everyone should be able to find a few possibilities. There will be fourteen tasks in all. Since they're added through editing, there won't be a new post showing, so you'll have to keep checking.

Sorry, no crafts this time. But now I wish I knew someone getting married so I could order some from you and give them as a gift :)
I hope you'll be making some anyway, and post them in the What Have You Made Lately folder!

message 29: by Ava Catherine (last edited Jan 08, 2013 11:12PM) (new)

Ava Catherine | 4257 comments Those are both excellent ideas, Jaxnsmom! : ) Imagine the look on a bride's face when she opened her zombie gift! Oh, priceless! : )

I wish we had one that would dance and jump around like Rus's Kermit the Frog did. Wouldn't that be a hoot? Dancing feltie zombie bride and groom!

Shanna_redwind | 228 comments I signed up with the Words of Love team, but if the teams need equalizing closer to the toppler, I'm willing to jump ship and change teams if needed.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm wondering what bribes might be on offer from the two team captains, you know, to sweeten the deal. >;-)

message 33: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Love Stinks, yeah yeah. Come join us. Our team is going to rock!

message 34: by Debra (last edited Jan 09, 2013 08:51AM) (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Now, keep in mind, you don't have to be a tried-and-true hater of love to come join the Love Stinks team. You will be able to read books that fit any of the the love or hate tasks. I'm a hopeless romantic, myself; have been in a great relationship for a long time. However, I've also been badly burned in the past, so can see the darker side of love. So come join us and experience the lighter AND darker side of love!

message 35: by jaxnsmom (new)

Helen, Words of Love can offer you a week of unforgettable fun and humor. A week like no other! : ) We don't want to reveal all our secrets at once, but we have quite a few! ; )

message 39: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19301 comments Question.

Does it have to be "in love"? Or can it be "in lust" as well?

message 40: by April (new)

April | 970 comments oooooooo.....I like the "in lust" idea!

message 41: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8339 comments The last task is for you lusty babes looking for a stud muffin :D

And I modified some of the tasks that had already been posted by adding a love or lust option.

message 42: by Ava Catherine (last edited Jan 09, 2013 07:20PM) (new)

Ava Catherine | 4257 comments Oh, my! That last one might make me blush...then again maybe not! lol

They all sound like fun tasks, Jaxnsmom! Thanks for all your hard work! : )
We love you!

message 44: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19301 comments Awesome, thanks Jmom. I was wondering how I was going to tell the difference in some books!

Hmm I wonder what Felicia Day's urban fantasy romance goodreads group will be reading in Feb... This may be the week to catch up on all the last couple of months reading for that group.

Lara, Words of Love hopes you will swing by and give us the once over before you choose teams. We would love to have you reading and playing with us! : )
But mainly we are glad you are participating in the toppler. You will have a blast no matter which team you choose. : )

message 48: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2397 comments As a Words of Love team captain I feel I must point out how brilliant we are so here goes:

Want to read a great story then join the Words of Love team where love means more than the usual with stories of family, friends, life and more importantly books (and I'm sure we can fit in a cake or two). So join the Words of Love team for great stories and a great bunch of gossiping reading fiends! And don't forget we welcome those from the darker side of love - we must do with me as a captain ;-)

message 49: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8339 comments I haven't seen any bribes yet. I thought for sure Almeta would have been offering treats since she's gotten so many from Janice. LOL!

I've asked the mods to wait to see how the teams stack up before joining a team. Amy has already been assigned to the team her mom's not on so they can have their own competition :) Cherie -has Amy mentioned that to you yet? After any balancing, I'll fruit machine us other mods onto teams. The mods are just finding this out in this post. Surprise!

message 50: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19301 comments Not the fruit machine again! DON'T MAKE ME GO BACK INTO THAT THING!
