Prince of Tides......with Lords of Discipline a close second...I have often wondered and would like to ask him if given the chance....What kind of writer would he have been had he not come from such a dysfunctional family ?
Prince of Tides and Beach Music
I loved Prince of Tides and Beach Music. Prince of Tides made a great movie, also.
Definitely BEACH MUSIC! Loved that book! Of course, anything that PAT CONROY writes is well written, with great character development. Always waiting on a new book to come out.
You can't pick a favorite they are all so good.
I loved The Lords of Discipline -- one oft favorite books ever.
A tie between The Water is Wide and The Prince of Tides. I saw the movie Conrack and then read The Water is Wide. I was studying to become a teacher and found it inspiring. The Prince of Tides consumed me. I wasn't sure I was going to like it and I loved it. My family discussed endlessly how they would make a movie of the book and I have to say I think they did an admirable job, but left out some of my favorite characters!
Prince of Tides would be #1; South of Broad #2, and I'm looking forward to what Beach Music will have in store!
The Prince of Tides struck a chord with me that resonates to this day. The "Sins of our fathers" theme, the suggestion that many of us wrestle with reconciling our childhood in order to move forward into who we are truly meant to become was illustrated in such a seamless, fluid way that the book read like a tutorial in how to craft a good story. Definitely my favorite Conroy book, yet I love them all!
I like Beach Music the best, then Prince of Tides, then South of Broad. Those are the only ones I've read so far.
Beach Music for sentimental reasons. My mother was literally reading it as she passed away
Prince of Tides = The Lords of Discipline
Prince of Tides. His descriptions of the profound love between a brother and sister were immeasurable. I gave that book to my little brother when he was alive and well. He kept it on his coffee table. It was one of the best things I ever did.

I was unexpectedly blown away by "The Lords of Discipline." I think I was confusing this one with the old movie "Taps" and was not familiar with this story. I'm reading "My Losing Season" now, after just finishing up "Lords" and "The Boo" before that. "South of Broad" was my first Conroy novel, and I found that astonishingly good as well. After this I only have "Beach Music" left of his published work, but I think "Lords" takes the prize for me so far.

After reading through these posts, Arch, it seems that one is often called out as his best. Conroy has often mentioned what a dark period in his life that writing of Beach Music was for him. Of course he's always used that pain productively. Great stuff, and thanks for the comment.

South of Broad was difficult for me, but I was finally able to get into it after a trip to Charleston, SC.I loved Beach Music, too.

I love Pat Conroy, but South of Broad just didn't do it for me. The characters and story were just unbelievable.
