In the chapter called "Ruthie," (view spoiler)

Erin (erinecarroll) | 0 comments I think that Hattie feels as though she can not bear to leave one more child behind and in the end her children trump her love affair.

Lauren Collier Her children. Plain and simple, she couldn't abandon them. Also Lawrence isn't so much different from August. He loves to gamble, and frequently goes to night clubs. The only difference is that he has the money. I think Hattie realizes that, and the fact that her life really wouldn't be that much different.

Rebecca Lolly I second your comment. I think she realizes the grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence.

What do you think Hattie would do differently if she had a second chance, Rebecca and Lolly?

April (ajoys) I agree with Lolly and Rebecca. Hattie realized that being with Lawrence was not going to making her life any better or happier, she would just have different problems. I think many time in our lives we all tend to make the mistake that Hattie made. We think that thing will be better if they are different but usually there are just different and sometime even more problems.

I honestly have no idea because it seems like, Hattie's perspective at least, during this time period a lot of married men went out at night leaving their wives at home and did whatever they pleased. And from August's flashbacks during the chapter on Ruthie it seemed like Hattie really did care for August. I think both Hattie and August grew a part when the thing that connected them (the twins) was no longer there.

Aguedalandia | 24 comments I think that what made Hattie go back to August was fear. Fear to de unknown, to fail again with another man and end up were she was with August, a loveless relationship.

She would have her children eventually, but she knew that the situation may bother Lawrence, after all he wasn't the father, or maybe he will not want them. All they had was passion. Lawrence didn't know Hattie like August. Things were bad with August, but they knew each other.

I think Hattie would choose a love that is not just centered around passion but a love with a real emotional lasting and sustaining connection. I think she had that potential with Lawrence and passion is important. However I think with the lose like was mentioned I don't think they could go back and I think she lost her second chance probably very involuntarily.

LiteraryMarie Hattie realizes that it is better to continue living with the familiar August, than to live an unknown life with Lawrence. Both men would leave her alone at night. It was better to stay married to August than to fail at a second relationship. Hattie also considered her children. Where would the children benefit? Ultimately, at home with their father.

Ella: 1954
"I don't want Ella to go no more then you do..."

I am one of many people given up by a biological mother- so that I could have a better life, and so that she could have a more manageable one. I was told by my biological mother that she didn't want to go on welfare and poverty was great with two newborn babies. I love my mom who raised me and I wouldn't want anything other then what I was given- "HER". Hattie has a life, everyone has wants, goals and dreams. People overwhelm themselves in life and it doesn't make them a bad person. When a mother makes a difficult decision to uplift her child's life in anyway- this is responsible, brave and loving. What should be remembered is that every life has it's own mind and heart. With this thought, even a loving decision to escape the low depth's of poverty or some other human trouble may have consequences that are not favorable and need to be accepted. Sometimes bravery doesn't reward a person with the jewel they expect. -M.

In the chapter 'Ruthie:1951' I think that in her mind Hattie is weighting the pros vs. cons, in regards to her relationship with August and Lawrence. She is trying to determine which bad apple is best.

Lorrie (lorrier) | 39 comments I was given up for adoption in 1951. I loved my mother who raised me. She was my gift given me by my birth mother. It was a difficult decision for her and it wasn't always easy being adopted. In the end, it was all good and for the best. I applaud Hattie for doing what she had to do. It was time.

April | 9 comments I think "Alice" was my favorite chapter. I started to think, "This doesn't make sense! What is going on?" Then I had my ah ha moment....."She's lost her mind! The poor thing has lost her mind and this is what it feels like to lose it!" I loved it! I want to have lunch with Alice, invite her shopping, and add her to my Christmas card list! I want to know more and more and more about Alice.
