Carren Kay | 953 comments You have to remember that Claire was married to Frank for 7 or 8 years. She was very conflicted.

If I were much younger, no I wouldn't leave Jamie. But I've been married for 34 years, with three kids and a great husband. I'm not leaving him.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Yeah, I mean we as readers got more of the story between Jamie and Claire so of course it would be hard for us to imagine leaving her.

But we didn't get to read CLaire meeting Frank, and their first few years together before the war. I mean, they stayed together despite the war and I felt that they loved each other. And in the end she made the right choice.

I thought it was perfect that she debated. It showed the depth of her character.

Erica (butterflygirl1975) | 99 comments It wasn't just Frank...it was also her own time. Remember what she told him? "The hot baths almost won." She admitted throughout Outlander that this time really appealed to her and I think she really enjoyed being a healer but at the same time, I think she missed her own time. I don't blame her for thoroughly thinking about it. I would have thought less of her if she had not. And really, how else would she have truly realized that Jamie was her future if she hadn't point blank had the choice that he gave her? That whole scene made me cry the first time I read it...so unbelievable.

message 4: by Heather in FL (new)

Heather in FL (heather_fl) I thought that part of the reason she wanted to go back was because she knew things would be bad at Culloden (not sure if that's spelled right... I listened to them, lol) and she presumed Jamie would die. Plus, she was pregnant and had already lost a baby, so she'd have a better chance of bringing Jamie's baby into the world going back where there was better medicine. I could be wrong, though... I think it was still a tough decision, but those things tipped her to going back. It's also why she didn't ever think to look for him for 20 years once she got back.

message 6: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments The first time Jamie took Claire to Craigh na Duhn she wasn't pregnant. So I don't think worrying about a baby was on her mind at that time.

And this thread isn't marked as a spoiler thread, so I'm going to do that now. Please make sure you look out for spoilers when you type. Many members haven't read all the books and may just be starting out.

message 7: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (delta108) | 63 comments Claire was looking at certain death if she stayed. She knew how the battle would end and that the leaders of the clans (which included Jamie) would be hung. Even if she stayed, she would be tried for treason and would have to give birth in prison.

Also due to also almost dying from her first delivery, she most likely would have died during delivery or from infection after delivery. Her baby would have been given to an orphanage and later a workhouse.

Would she be with Jamie if she stayed? Even if she lived through the birth and prison, it would years before she would be free.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments That's true, the second time at the end of Dragonfly in Amber she had no choice.

I think though, they're talking about the first time he took here there, right after she was almost hung for witchcraft.

I totally forgot about the *very* first time... and I agree with gertt that the thing with Jamie was still very new at that point. Relatively speaking.

Nicole (kytanathebold) | 5 comments Oh.. I know I would have! And not strickly for the reason that I had a husband to go back to. Cars, running hot water, tooth brushes, real medicine, a simple bed with a mattress... all of those things would have made me take a pause!!
