It's a grown-up take on "Lord of the Flies."

A Navy carrier is marooned on a tropical island. Not sure what's up with the rest of the world, but apparently they're not rescued for quite a while (if ever?). The novel follows the men and women as they devolve and become more and more aggressive and uncivilized.

A friend described this novel to me around 1998; not sure when it was written.

It sounds like Lord of the Flies, except this book only has boys in it.

Any chance this could actually be The Last Ship? I don't remember the 'devolving' part, but they do end up on a tropical island with no chance of rescue.
