Outread Aubrey! Challenge discussion
What are you reading?
I think I need to read this, Varon.
I'm still reading when I can. Death Comes to Pemberly, a John Piper book, the name of which I can't recall, as well as a few others that I have with me.I've been reading Chautona Havig's weekly "episodes" of Diaries of a Decluttering Junkie too, but they're so short, I haven't listed them.
I'm on a busy schedule - changing houses every few weeks, while I help friends out as a sort of assistant Nanny/Housekeeper. Leaves little time for reading - especially when I'm trying to finish my book too. But I'm working on it! :D
It was really good. I love it when I read a secular book and can recommend it without feeling compelled to warn anyone about any of the content. :)
Here's a hint, you review racers. The book goes up on Goodreads before it's published, giving Aubrey an unfair advantage, but it doesn't go up on Amazon until after it's published, so often times the first review slot stays open over there for a while. (HINT: Amazon reviews are cool!)
All that aside, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Now you have to wait six months for the next one, mwahahaha!
I've been doing more book promotion lately than anything else, but in the process of promoting my book I read a book about promoting books, so it's all good.

Yes Ma'am. Just went and did so. And (haha!) it was the first one. :P And I slid in the first review on Dreams and Shadows while I was at it. Thanks for the nudge, Katie. I know Amazon reviews are important and always like to give them, but they often slip my mind.
Just finished Crime of Fashion by Chautona Havig. Good mystery, and I really enjoyed the book. Probably as much as the first one. :D
I got to hear The Ransom of Red Chief by O. Henry read aloud last night. It was really hilarious! O. Henry really was a master with words in that story!

O. Henry is one of my absolute favorite authors. His Complete Works are among the books-I'd-want-with-me-on-a-desert-island.I wasn't racing anybody, but I did get in the first review of Firmament: In His Image! Also just finished A Secret Gift: How One Man's Kindness & a Trove of Letters Revealed the Hidden History of the Great Depression, a really fascinating, poignant book.
Hey, people! Since you've, y'know, been doing a lot of reading this year, want to participate in a survey about reading habits?
My friend Leah (yes, that Leah over there) is running a (short and sweet) survey on her review blog. You should go help her out. If you won't do it for me, do it for the giveaway--she's giving away three books (including one of Katie's, if you haven't jumped on that series bandwagon yet) to random participants!

Thanks for the shout out, Aubrey. :) And, just to clarify, I'm actually only giving away one book, but the winner can choose from three options. ;)
(That's what I get for not reading the rules very closely and just jumping to the survey, lol.)
You may want to check out the "Grand Prize" thread... maybe...
And October's giveaways are also up! https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... Giving away the first books in both of Molly Evangeline's YA series, with matching bookmarks made by the author herself!

I've been reading the same book for like, forever. I took a break to read The Song Of Achilles which is, essentially, published fan fiction.
Published fanfiction? *interest piqued*
On that note, anyone check out Kindle Worlds? I'm hoping it catches on and they continue to expand their library of worlds. I emailed them about indie authors adding their worlds; their response was generic, but positive...
Anyway, finally sat down and finished reading The Pirate Daughter's Promise, which I'd started over a year ago... read a random short story that was free (saw the author's tweet about it)... marked some stuff read that wasn't listed on Goodreads before... actually doing something worth mentioning in regards to reading for once...

I just discovered they're publishing collected editions of the My Little Pony Micro Series. Since it's my general rule to only add collected editions (with ISBNs) to my "read" shelf (since you're really not supposed to add individual issues anyway), I went and removed all eight single issues from my read shelf and added the collected edition instead. Now it's 7 books easier to outread me for the second grand prize. Aren't I so honest? ;-P (Now even Corey can't say I'm gaming the system by reading manga/comics, so THERE!)
I'm talking about the second grand prize, good sir. To be eligible for that you have to outread me including all the manga and comics I've read. You're currently 24 books behind me on that score. ;)
I think Kindle Worlds is a good thing in giving fanfic a better name in the world BUT I think it'll take away from my favourite aspect of fanfic -- it's not driven by commercial gain so it can literally do anything without hangups about whether it'll sell. Fanfic written for publication would be very different, I reckon.Song of Achilles is just Achilles/Patroclus slash.

Mmm ... there are some fandoms with published fan-fiction already, so we can begin to see the effect if we look. Anyone can already publish fan fiction based on a work in the public domain, which means that there's quite a bit of Pride and Prejudice fan-fiction being sold, but there's also at least five fan sequels (published by a mass-market publisher) to books by H. Beam Piper.
Also, I've on occasion noticed fan-fic authors having made changes to their stories because a contingent of vocal readers left reviews clamoring for it. I doubt commercialism will be any more crass in the fan-fiction community than the gratuitous attention- and review-seeking behavior that already exists. :)
And, as various authors (in blog posts and in books about writing) have pointed out, writing something a certain way because you think that will sell is usually a recipe for writing something that won't sell. (Making a change to appease an editor who has a better sense of the market is a separate matter, but I doubt that'll come up in Kindle Worlds.)
So I haven't even bothered to read Insurgent yet, but I couldn't resist this... And I gotta say, Roth knows how to play her cards. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Jonathan, you may be right. I tend to hang out in small fandoms like the Les Mis and Hamlet fandoms, where the community is genuinely just writing for the hell of it, but I know it's very different from some of the more popular things.
I read today! I was sitting in the dentist's office for hours. He jokingly asked how many books I'd read that day and I was able to say I honestly didn't mind since I NEVER get reading time anymore. And I did get "In His Image" read sometime last week. Not sure how. I think Grace is doing what I'm doing, and writing "episodes." Which makes her 30-some planned book series make a whole lot more sense. ;) I'm also about halfway through Merlin's Blade but... it's slow going on that one. I'd rather read academic science. (Should be no surprise to those who know me.)
I actually finished two books within 24 hours. First, Death Comes to Pemberley by P. D. James. I enjoyed it. Well written, good mystery, and she held to most of the characters in the original Pride and Prejudice pretty well, I thought. I found her very tactful in her descriptions of the deaths and unsavory situations, too. She gave the details that were needed, but nothing beyond. I also finished Jordan Smith's Finding the Core of Your Story this morning. Actually, I started it over two or three days ago - I think I HAD started it in the first half of the year - but I tend to get distracted from Kindle books. I read the first edition once before, so this time I read the second edition. I really liked it! And a real, non-kindle copy is now on my wish-list. :D
Rebekah: Was there any sexual content in Death Comes to Pemberley? It sounds really interesting!I think BBC is actually making a mini-series of it...
Speaking of Corey, I saw the number of books on HIS shelf today - and wow! I'm really glad this is an Outread Aubrey challenge, not Outread Corey. ;)Zoe wrote: "Rebekah: Was there any sexual content in Death Comes to Pemberley? It sounds really interesting!

No, there wasn't. There was mention of an affair, but there wasn't any actual scenes. It's talked about after-the-fact and done very tactfully. I was actually impressed. And it IS very interesting! :)
Finished The Road......................
*laughs* Thanks, Faith! Now to read something else off this stack on my floor...
I bought two anthologies at the convention yesterday, and I'm resisting getting another one...I have too much reading to do as it is!!!
Still trying to wrap my brain around The Man Who was Thursday, after finishing it today... I also finished Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ by John Piper. Great book!
I've been considering reading Passport through Darkness: A True Story of Danger and Second Chances for some time and I just noticed today that it was free on Amazon. Not sure if that's normal or if it's a special, but here's the link if anyone else is interested. http://www.amazon.com/Passport-throug...
Finally finished reading the book about Celtic Women that I've been working my way through for some time. While a fascinating read, I got lost in all the Gaelic names at times - they're all the same when you've no clue how to pronounce them! I need to read up on a bunch of things for a project I'm doing and for a university interview, so I'm not sure if I'll finish Women Warriors next or go on to the Mabinogion. Or maybe the Icelandic Sagas would be more useful...

I was reading volume 1 of Stan Lee's "Starborn" which was fantastic. It starts out the way you think a cosmic superhero story should start out, describing a civilization light years away and one planet's desperate attempt to stop a hive-mind infestation. Then it gets to the third page and you realize they're words typed into Word doc by an office-worker who works on his space opera novel in his spare time. But then members of that hive infestation attack the next day after he got a rejection letter....
