This is my current fiction reading. I picked up Stegner's "Angle of Repose" a couple years ago and liked it a lot. This one is as good. The copywriting on the dustjacket makes it sound like a cross between "Tobacco Road" and "The Grapes of Wrath," but it isn't. Stegner is a good writer of big books.

I also liked "Angle of Repose" the best so far. BRCM was good, but not great. Just today I started "The Spectator Bird," which begins, as usual, with his fine prose.
I loved Crossing to Safety and moved on to his Collected Stories. Various portions of BRCM were published as the short stories so that when I started reading it, it was like I already knew these people. Angle of Repose is also great.
