Isabella (All Da Ladies Luv Leo) Thomas The closest I have seen is the Lord of the Rings movie, which I liked the same as the book.

HAS there ever been a better movie?

message 2: by Ak (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ak The Firm. Da Vinci Code.

Ryan Kiernan I think the shawshank redemption movie is better than the book it is based on

Sophie Hmm... not that I can think of. The thing that annoys me about this is though....*scenario*

Person - *watches movie* "Wow! That was amazing!"

Me - "You should read the book then! The book is way better than the movie."

Person - "You're weird! Who read's books? Watching the movie is easier!"

Me - "But movies miss out all the good stuff and the books are ALWAYS better than the movie."

Person - "Whatever."

*Me screaming and pulling my hair out in frustration*

That is what annoys me about book adaptions.

Sarah I wish people would stop saying that the book was better than the movie. Directors put just the amount of work into there movies as authors do in books. It is a little rude. the movies are very useful to the books in many ways too. Be happy they exist.

I'm not saying the the movies are bad (exept the Percy Jackson movie becouse that was terrible) I'm just saying that the books are better.

Marisa The Perks of Being a Wallflower is better as a movie in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I loved the book, but it needed a more wrapped up ending. The movie provided that ending and I was very happy with it.

It was good if you haven't read the book. I think of it more like 'if it happened agian'.

Meryl People will probably flay me for this, but I thought The Hunger Games movie was better than the book.

I think Jennifer Lawrence made me like Katniss more than the book.

I think part of the reason is that the movie really drove home the point of the utter brutality and callousness of the Capitol citizens about watching children murder each other, as well as the brutality of the Capitol for continuing the Games year after year.

The film was more visceral for me.

I THOUGHT SO TOO!!!!!!! YOU ARE SOOO AWESOME!!!!

Meryl Blueturtles wrote: I THOUGHT SO TOO!!!!!!! YOU ARE SOOO AWESOME!!!!

:-)

Thanks, Blueturtles. Do you also think that the first book was the best of the three?

Sarah Well i liked the first but the second one was realy great. I wanted to slap her during the third one. That made me stop reading them.

Sally People are gonna hate me for this one, but...
Dune - in fact both the David Lynch version and the John Harrison SyFy version were better than the book

Meryl Nah. Tastes differ. I disagree about the Lynch movie, although the SyFy series was pretty good.

Sophie Blueturtles wrote: "Well i liked the first but the second one was realy great. I wanted to slap her during the third one. That made me stop reading them."

So true. The first was the best, the second was still good, but it all went downhill from there :(

Sarah I don't know that movie. Well, I got to go whatch BATMAN now. Because... you know... HE'S BATMAN!!!!

Except for the end of the third book. I did like how she ended things with Peeta and Katniss.

Sarah DON"T TELL ME WHAT HAPPENS!!!

Rel Movies that were better than the books hmm I know some that were almost like the books the Bourne Series

True. But for me, that was one of the few high points in that particular book. Shame :(

Rachel I think the Narnia movies are better than the books. But that's just me.
There's also one other book that I know of, but I can never remember what it is.

Nichola Ak wrote: "The Firm. Da Vinci Code."

I haven't seen or read the Firm but IMHO The Da Vinci Code film was absolutely awful compared to the book. The only film I can think which was better than the book, and I'm probably going to get flamed for this, was the last Twilight film. The book had a terrible ending, the Film was marginally better.

message 26: by Greg (new) - rated it 5 stars

Greg I thought Steven Spielberg's Jaws was better than the Peter Benchley novel.

I can't attest to that because I haven't seen the last film. Though judging by the trailers it did look better.

Ragnheiður I like The Princess Bride movie better than the book, also Under the Tuscan Sun and The Power of One, but those are exceptions. I usually like the book better than the movie.

Josiane Claremont Yeah, I agree with you guys. Definitely, the best I've seen were

The Lord of the Rings (but there is NO WAY IN **** you can get me to read/watch The Hobbit...horrible thing)
The Hunger Games (sort of...)
Narnia (definitely!)
I Am Number Four (sort of...)

The book and the movie of Hoot was pretty much on par; I honestly can't decide which was better.

Izzy Jurassic Park. Come on, the film was pretty good. The CGI alone is impressive.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree with the Lord of the Rings. I started the book and couldn't get through it.

MJ Ak wrote: "The Firm. Da Vinci Code."

I have a friend who teaches a popular culture class at a local college. She uses "The Firm" in her class and tells her students NOT to watch the movie instead of reading the book for her class because the movie has a different ending than the book. Inevitably, she gets one or two students who don't listen and she can tell when they hand in their papers.

message 33: by Kala (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kala I thought the movie version of The Notebook was better than the novel. I liked the book, just thought the movie was absolutely beautiful and made the characters more loveable.

NomadicPlatypus I love William Peter Blatty's book, but I think William Friedkin's movie of "The Exorcist" did more for the story. That's probably because Blatty wrote the screenplay and produced the movie, too !

Kathleen Gulo The City of Ember was better than the book, it sped up the pace of the story and the visualization made the concept alot more appealing as a story.

The same goes for the Spiderwick Chronicles, the movie for which cut out more than an entire book, which I would say the authors should have done.

Can't think of any others at the moment, but I don't think that movies have a duty to be faithful to the books of which they are based. Most of the time when I hear complaints about movies, it is because they don't follow the book. The movie is an adaptation, the director and producer's vision of how the story should be told. True, the book version might be better alot of the time, but "different" doesn't constitute "bad."

message 36: by Matthijs (last edited Jan 05, 2013 09:31PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Matthijs Contact. Probably my favourite movie. I thought by focussing on six people in the book instead of one person in the movie it was far less exciting and took away some of the doubt and ambiguity. The movie made the case about faith and science much stronger.

Also Jody Foster ;)

Why didn't you like the Hobbit? I've read Fellowship of the Ring and personally the Hobbit is much easier for me to read and I actually enjoy reading it. It's much more understandable, I guess you could say. But once you get through a Tolkien book you feel awesome.

Um, if we count Comics, Kick-Ass the film was way better than the comic for me. All my friends liked the comic better, but I thought the movie adaptation was amazing. The comic was extremely loose and somewhat boring. And Big Daddy's backstory was altered, in the film he redeemed himself, per say. Bit Kick-Ass 2 the comic was amazing, I wonder how the movie will play out, seeing as the comic is extremely inappropriate.

message 38: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Taylor I like the movie adaptation of Stardust better than the book. Also, the movie Secret of Moonacre is much better than the book it was adapted from, The Little White Horse. Those are the only two I can think of though.

Brittney The Bridges of Madison County was much better in a movie than the book. Eastwood changed the story in important ways to improve it. I know many people don't care for the movie because they are used to seeing Eastwood playing a different character, but I really like seeing him playing a more sensitive character.

message 40: by Jenn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jenn O'Brien The Jane Austen Book Club was much better than the book. You explored more of the characters than their single chapters.

Sparrowlicious Stardust. I liked that one better than the book but then again, I heard there was also a comic adaption which was also different. Then again, Neil Gaiman appearently approved the changes from book to script so that was okay, I guess?

This thread would not have been complete until someone mentioned Stardust. The movie was way better.
I prefer the Lord of the Rings movie to the books, I feel the books lack the drama and action of the movie.
The Princess Bride is another movie which is just slightly better than the book.

Sarah The Notebook and Message In A Bottle. I've always thought the movies were better than the original source.

Rahul Nath The Godfather. Marlon Brando + Al Pacino > Mario Puzo.

✿Claire✿ The Hunt for Red October is a brilliant film but I think I gave up on the book partway in. It was definitely not Tom Clancy's finest work, in fact I think it's one of his early books. Having said that, I know there was a lot of rewriting when they made the film which obviously improved it!

Breaking Dawn part 2 I'm torn. Once I figured out that Carlisle didn't get shredded and burnt I enjoyed the ending so I think I'd have to watch it again to decide but they were both good, book and film

message 46: by Stephen (last edited Jan 07, 2013 02:30AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Stephen There are a number of movies that were better than the book but often that's because they're actually expansions on a book or story with a novel idea. Two of the best examples I can think of are Dexter and Brokeback Mountain

Check out this list for a few other people's opinions...

Rahul Nath Oh yes, The Silence of the Lambs. Surprised no one has mentioned it yet.

Rahul Nath And Bridge to Terrabithia. The book was good, the movie was brilliant.

Sarah Rahul wrote: "Oh yes, The Silence of the Lambs. Surprised no one has mentioned it yet."

I thought the book was pretty good too. It's on par with the film. Though of course, in the movies you get to see Anthony Hopkins slithery performance as Hannibal but I don't think the book was inferior in any way with the film.

Rahul Nath Yes, the book was great but the movie just blew me away :D I may be biased here since Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins can do no wrong in my book, but I felt it was slightly better. Sir Anthony made Hannibal even more menacing than he possibly could be.
