What if?

When I started writing fiction stories and novels, it basically came from one question, what if? I would ask what if this would happen or what if that and it would evolve into something? But I'm curious am I the only one does this? It seems people plan out a book beofore writing and I just start wrting with a thought.

what if is a great way to start a thought process anda then a dialogue. I don't know how else you would write fiction.
