Jim (jimmaclachlan) This is a reply from Joy. She's having trouble.
-------------------

Hi Werner,
I'm having trouble uploading my reply at Goodreads.
So here it is below:

Werner wrote: "... The movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding has its pluses and minuses (like most movies), but one plus was the message, encapsulated in a quote near the end, that where your ethnic heritage is concerned, you should "never let it define you, but always let it be a part of you." ..."

Wow, Werner, that is a great quote. So true and appropriate to our current conversation here. Thank you! I'm going to add it to my quote collection. I'm so glad you saved the quote from the movie. IMDb should add it to their quote section for that movie.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Chrome wouldn't connect for most of the day, now it brings me to the sign in page but keeps reloading so fast that I don't have the chance to sign in. I'm using the awful IE to access GR right now.
A few of my friends can't access the site today either. And from the lack of posts, I would think the problem is wide spread.

message 303: by Werner (last edited Mar 11, 2013 04:11PM) (new)

Werner Until this evening, Goodreads was inaccessible for me, too, both on my home computer and office computer. Both Foxfire and IE "couldn't find the server" or were "unable to display the page." :-(

As I told Joy (by e-mail), that may not be the exact quote (it's been awhile, and I didn't write it down). But if not, it's very close, and that's definitely the gist of it.

message 304: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I'm still getting the reload thing, I have to go over to IE, which is annoying because IE doesn't work with my gmail which is where I receive notifications.
I'm going to leave the page up and let it reload a million times, maybe it'll tire of it and let me sign in. Another thing I don't usually have to do.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Looks like things are back to normal at GR now. Hope so!

message 306: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I was using Firefox (Werner, are you related to Marg?) at work without a problem & am using Chrome now. I had some over capacity messages at one point, but they went away. Joy seemed to connect after a reboot. Perhaps it is a caching issue. Try rebooting.

message 307: by Werner (new)

Werner Nope, no relation to Marg; I just like Firefox. :-) Actually, Goodreads is working just fine on my office computer now, even without a reboot; but thanks for the suggestion, Jim!

message 308: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Seems like I'm the only one who can't get in on Chrome. How annoying. I'll try rebooting though I wish I didn't have to. TY for the suggestion Jim.

message 309: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments It worked. Thanks Jim! Do you know why rebooting fixed it?

message 310: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Caching is my guess, Jackie. Temp files that are stored & seem to be correct but aren't really. A reboot sometimes makes your computer dump them or see them as out dated, so you get new ones.

When in doubt, reboot. You can't believe all the background stuff that can clear up for you. Most people don't reboot enough, me included. Get yourself into the habit of rebooting as you walk by, then logging back in next time you go by. Do it once a day.

For one thing, Flash Player won't update unless you reboot. Always keep it patched. It's gotten a lot better, but I've seen a lot of viruses come through it in the past couple of years from infected ad streams.

----------

Werner, I was poking fun at you because you wrote Foxfire instead of Firefox in #303. Marg calls it that half the time, too.
;-)

Jackie, why don't you like to reboot?

What's good about Chrome?

Jim, does Flash Player update automatically or does a window pop up for that? How can I tell if I have Flash Player?

Werner Jim, thanks for the explanation; I get it now! :-) That's the kind of thing that happens when I type in a hurry. (Don't know what triggered my subconscious to write "Foxfire;" but my library does have the Foxfire books. :-) )

Werner, I confuse words all the time. In fact I keep a list of words and names which confuse me. :) In fact, there's a topic I started in this group about the subject. Here's the link:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

message 316: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Jim wrote: When in doubt, reboot.
Good advice.
Now another question: I shut my computer down completely during the night. Would that clear the caching problems also?

Joy, when I'm busy, I don't like to waste time, rebooting, waiting for things to load. Since I shut down once a day, I think that's enough, I don't want to do it during my computer time.

General question to the group:
Do you shut the computer down at night or do you just let it go into sleep mode?

message 317: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie, I know what you mean about losing time when rebooting, especially if you have a lot of windows/tabs open. When we close them, we can lose track of what we're doing, especially because we're usually doing TEN things at once! LOL

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie wrote: "... General question to the group:

Jackie, to answer your question, sometimes I close down and other times I leave my computer on. I think it's less apt to get invaded if it's closed down. No, Jim?

message 319: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I don't worry about viruses, I have good protection. I shut down because I think it's good for the computer to have some down time. My sister never shuts her's down, ever.

message 320: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 12, 2013 08:22AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie, with the computer, a few seconds down is the same as a few weeks down, I think. Unless you're overheating... The computer only knows "on" or "off". It doesn't matter how long it's off.

Let's ask Jim. :)

message 321: by Werner (new)

Werner Jackie, at home I turn my computer completely off when I'm not using it. At work, our IT department wants us to just restart our computers when we leave, and leave them on with no one logged in; that makes it easier for them to send updates. So that's what I do there; and during my shifts I stay logged in to my office computer (and the reference desk computer, if I'm also working from there) the whole time that I'm at work. That way, my e-mail is continuously updated, and it saves log-in time.

message 322: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Jackie, Flash Player brings up a box after you login to Windows & you need to tell it to update. To find out if you have it, check your installed programs for Adobe Flash Player.

Rebooting daily or shutting down at night is a fine idea. Computer sleep is actually worse than just leaving it on. I don't shutdown nightly or reboot that often, but I've configured my computer, know how to manually empty caches, & when to reboot. Marg doesn't know how to login, though. Special circumstances; computer nerd & "barely able to use computer, but it is very important to her".

Trojans are what you need to worry about the most & an AV scanner won't stop them. They are activated when you either mouse over an infected ad (yes, just roll your mouse pointer over some of them) open a page that's been hacked or click on a popup. If a popup you didn't ask for comes up, you shouldn't click the X at the top right corner nor click on any buttons, even ones that say "close". You should hold down the Alt key & tap the F4 key. It's safer.

--------------

Werner, LOL! I know. I have some of the Fox Fire books, too. Some articles are pretty good. Considering that they're done by a bunch of high school students based on old folks jawing, they're amazingly good.

-------------

Joy, since you'll want to know, check out the Wikipedia page on Fox Fire Magazine here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxfire_...

Their site is here:
http://www.foxfire.org/

It's pretty cool.

message 323: by Jackie (last edited Mar 12, 2013 12:33PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I also have a free real time program for trojans and adware, at the time I got it, it was rated as the best adware protection. I love that it runs in real time, so you can block the infection rather than waiting until you do a scan and then remove it. It's from lavasoft.

I have Adobe Flash Player, I don't remember seeing anything for an update. Do you think I should go to their site and install the newest version?

message 324: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Lavasoft's Adaware? It's OK. Personally, I prefer Spybot which is also free for home use. Since all such protection is basically reactive, Spybot goes a step further by backing up the registry so if you do get bit, you can often roll back.

Yes on the Adobe Flash Player. You may have inadvertently turned it off. There have been at least 3 updates in the past month.

message 325: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Eric uses Spybot.

Adobe Flash Player is in my list of programs in the Control Panel, Active X and Plugin. Is there a way to turn it on? Or should I just go and get the updated version?

Ty for all your computer help, you're knowledgeable and you've helped me a lot.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I don't remember, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I do a lot of things on auto-pilot and then have no memory if I did it or not.

Me too. "Auto-pilot" is a good word for it. There's one pill I'm supposed to take at suppertime. After I finish my supper, I sometimes can't remember if I took the pill or not. So now I try to say to my husband right after I take the pill: "I took my pill." By saying that, we both remember. Sometimes, instead of saying that, I sing: "I took my pill - Oh what a thrill!" That REALLY helps us remember. (lol)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I recently watched two good comedy movies streamed from Netflix, both with Jason Bateman:

"The Switch": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0889573/?...

and "Extract": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1225822/?...

Recommended, especially if you like Jason Bateman.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2091018/?...
The series shows how "the science-fiction imaginings of the writers of the past are now becoming the science realities of our day."

I'm including the series here in our "movies" section because it's available at Amazon Prime as an Instant Video. See their ad here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006...
Scroll down at the above linked page to see the list of episodes for Season One. Included are:
1. Mary Shelley
2. Philip K. Dick
3. H. G. Wells
4. Arthur C. Clarke
5. Isaac Asimov
6. Jules Verne
7. Robert Heinlein
8. George Lucas

The cost per episode is $1.99.
The cost for the entire season one is $12.99.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I see that the "Prophets of Science Fiction" series is currently being re-aired on the Science Channel. Just now they are airing the episode about Isaac Asimov's works.

Of course, Asimov wrote about robots.
There's a new movie out called "Robot & Frank" (2012):
http://dvd.netflix.com/Search?oq=&...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1990314/?...

NETFLIX DESCRIPTION: "Set in the near future, Frank [played by Frank Langella] is given a walking, talking humanoid robot programmed to improve his physical and mental health. What follows is an often hilarious and heartwarming story about finding friends and family in the most unexpected places."

IMDb DESCRIPTION: "Set in the near future, an ex-jewel thief receives a gift from his son: a robot butler programmed to look after him. But soon the two companions try their luck as a heist team."

I've seen them, too. They're not bad, but I thought they varied in quality.
