Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I just finished Magic and Loss (Golgotham #3) by Nancy A. Collins which I highly enjoyed but feels like it may be the last in the series...does anyone know??

I also finished Mate Set (Mating Heat, #1) by Laurann Dohner which was one of those books on my kindle that I do not recall buying so it was an awesome surprise. I will also say that while there are lots of sexy bits the story really held up well .

I have had Deadtown on my tbr forever I think it is still on my bookshelf. What did you think of it?

Also how was Hell Bent? You know I could never get into Magic to the Bone ...I want to like it and then I get about 100 pages in and start looking for something else to read. So I wonder is the writing similar??

Sadly this ended up in my dnf pile. I felt like the story was fairly boring. I almost quit around chapter 5, but kept reading, although I did switch to a different book. Today I went to pick it back up and realized that I just didn't care, not a good thing when you are 200 pages in.

I would still give it a try, maybe go the library route though.

Sara | 860 comments I highly recommend Deadtown (Deadtown, #1) by Nancy Holzner - a very underrated series.

Hell Bent (Broken Magic, #1) by Devon Monk - I loved the book. Some say you can enjoy it without reading the Allie Beckstrom series but I think to have a better understanding of the characters you need to read the Allie books first. The first two books of the Allie series were okay for me but the third book is where it became a mandatory read. The supporting cast expanded at that point and it's also the beginning of Shame and Terric's story. If you want to read Hell Bent without reading the Allie books I would gladly answer any questions.

Now I'm giving Urban Shaman (Walker Papers, #1) by C.E. Murphy a try because my best friend gave it to me and really wants me to read it so we'll see.

I may try the other series and perhaps if I skim a bit it may pick up.

Snarktastic Sonja (snownsew) | 15 comments Ugh. I finished Hell Bent (Broken Magic, #1) by Devon Monk and have no idea what to read now. I have read the first chapter of so many books that don't seem to grab me. I am contemplating First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson #1) by Darynda Jones but am resisting because I have read that there are poorly handled rape references.

I feel as though I am banging my head against a brick wall. Of course, reading withdrawal will do that to you.

I also feel bad because I am WAY behind on reviews . . .

Sara | 860 comments Sandra & Dawn,

Thanks!

Mike,

I went back and forth on Ex-Heroes too but I really enjoyed it - I started the next book in the series as soon as I finished Ex-Heroes. I understand the zombie burnout but it was fun seeing how superheroes would react in a zombie apocalypse. Of course, the heroes in this universe are powered down - there is no Superman, Green Lantern, Doctor Strange, or Mister Fantastic to solve the problem in two minutes.

Raymond Mathiesen (raymondmathiesen) | 16 comments Hypocrites In His Midst: A Story About Flawed Human Beings by Donnell Wilson – Book Review

4.5 out of 5 stars

The long road from street gangs to success…
Wilton Latso is seventy two years old and a grandfather. In the middle of a heated argument with his adult daughter Abbie, Wilton realizes that she has no idea of who he is, where he came from, and why he did the things he did when he was bringing her up. Spontaneously Wilton starts remembering and soon he decides to write down the story of his life. Wilton came from a poor family living in a poor suburb of St. Louis, Missouri in the late 1940’s / early 1950s. In this era of street gangs Wilton is soon introduced to a world of violence, ego and selfishness. Wilton’s parents are staunch Pentecostal Christians, but Wilton doubts that faith from the start. The trouble is that he can see all too clearly his parent’s hypocrisy, particularly his mother’s. Throughout his life Wilton will continue to observe people, noting many to be hollow, offering friendship, espousing beliefs but proving to be fakes.

Donnell Wilson’s Hypocrites In His Midst: A Story About Flawed Human Beings is a fictional autobiography spanning seven decades. It is a story of “redemption” (Ch. 8) in a secular sense. This is a book about trying to “do the right thing” (Ch. 3), though the “right thing” (Ch. 2) is not always obvious or easy to achieve. Wilson’s novel, especially in the first three Parts, is broadly comparable to Nicky Cruz’s real life autobiography Run Baby Run (Logos, 1972), though that book is firmly Christian, while this book is firmly agnostic (Ch. 31). Most of all, this book is about how a person can growing to maturity (or avoid it).

Are these re-reads for you or your first time reading them?

I'm looking forward True (New Species, #11) by Laurann Dohner which comes out next week I think.

message 1387: by Alisa (new)

Alisa I just finished Aden (Vampires in America, #7) by D.B. Reynolds which I enjoyed. Probably the best in the series besides Raphael.

I also finished The Jaguar (Charlie Hood, #5) by T. Jefferson Parker which was really good. I love this author. This book is part of a series (he mostly just does stand alones). It's a mystery/who done it type series. This one focuses on LA cops and DEA and the complex relationship between us and Mexico in relation to the drug cartels and guns sales. BUT he adds a bit of the paranormal w/a character who is a lower level demon and causing havoc throughout. I've never read a series that is mostly murder suspense but with the paranormal thrown in just a bit the way this author does. I highly recommend this series (& really anything this author does) but it must be read in order.
