He's not complaining too much. He's a little sore, but he's handling it well. I don't think he minds wearing them all that much, but he's 9. He thought it was cool that he got to pick different colors for the rubber bands. Lol :)

That's the thing I love about the braces.Picking colours:)I like to experiment with colours,so I choose silly ones sometimes.Right now mine's light purple, but last time it was red, which made my friends call me vampire, since my teeth looked almost like it had blood on them.

Lol XD He went with 4 different colors so his mouth looks a bit like a rainbow right now.

message 2106: by [deleted user] (new)

The rubber bands are the best part! I've had braces on for a year now, and picking the colors always makes me happy :) my first colors were bright pink and yellow. My mouth was just BEAUTIFUL lol XD

message 2107: by Mishma (new)

Mishma Wow,that's cute.Once I did that, and it didn't work out.It freaked out my friends, and I was stuck with 'rainbow teeth' for a month.
They must have told me that nicknames are a side effect of having braces.Though part of me loves those nicknames:)

message 2108: by Jalyn (new)

Jalyn (jalynnie) | 3827 comments @Sarah I think I probably would have picked pink if I ever would have had braces :)

@Mishma there are a lot of kids in my son's class that have braces so I wonder if they do nicknames or if it's so common that they don't really pay attention to the braces. Are there a lot of people your age with braces?

How about you Sarah? Are there a lot of kids your age with braces? I'm wondering if different places recommend braces for different ages.

message 2109: by Mishma (new)

Mishma Not many wear braces here,Jalyn. And they actually recommended me to wear them when I turned 13,because of the growing of cheekbones or something like that. And the nicknames aren't mean or anything. They just like to make a joke from my braces.

message 2110: by Tati (new)

Tati Here in Brazil braces are usually done in teens, after all of the permanent teeth have come in. But that does not prevent kids using headgears or those splints, retainers and the like (don't know the proper name in English, sorry)

message 2111: by Jalyn (new)

Jalyn (jalynnie) | 3827 comments Oh ok. I know the my son might have to do a second stage of braces when he's a little bit older (also around 13), but his orthodontist is hoping that we can avoid a second step by expanding his mouth now as well as the braces. His problem is that his mouth is really small and there just isn't any room for his adult teeth. They took some xrays and one of his adult canine teeth is completely sideways in his gums because it has no room.

message 2112: by Tati (new)

Tati Oh dear, that sounds complicated. I had the opposite problem, one of my teeth simply didn't exist, which left space for the other teeth to wander around

My son will need the headgear also, but thankfully they are giving him 2 months to get used to the braces and retainer before they do the headgear. He only has to wear it when he's sleeping though, which is great. When he is done with his braces he will have to wear a retainer to bed for the rest of his life.

message 2114: by Mishma (new)

Mishma Oh,I just had huge front teeth.

Are his braces temporary or permanent?

message 2116: by Tati (new)

Tati As for retainers, in Brazil they do something interesting, which apparently is not done in the USA. For the lower teeth, they glue a wire in the back of the teeth, so they can't move around. So we only have to wear retainers for the upper teeth, and those are quite discreet.

Huh. I've never heard of that. Cool. That would be much nicer to deal with, I'm sure.

Jalyn (jalynnie) | 3827 comments So...my entire town has flooded. It's crazy! I have never been so happy to live up on a hill!

message 2120: by [deleted user] (new)

Flooding is not fun! I hate whenever we get floods!

About the braces, maybe 1/8 kids ages 11-13 (around my age of 12) wear them. Not that many, but not so few that it's rare

message 2121: by Flore (new)

Flore (florefritz) I have braces! :(

No,what I asked was whether it's the kind of braces which you can remove and wear it again whenever you want.Mine is not like that. It's permanent.

Tati On my side of the pond, it's windy and rainy. Apparently, the English call it summer, but for me, born and raised in the tropics, this is more like autumn/winter

Hah, i wouldn't call it summer, We don't get it enough days to call it that!
We had it for a whole week last year. LOL.

The tiniest bit of sun we get, people strip off and walk around in hardly anything.

Jalyn (jalynnie) | 3827 comments I'm getting really frustrated with what's available at my digital libraries. They never have the books that I'm looking for and it's really frustrating, especially since the closest bookstore is 1 1/2 hours away (well, there is a place around here that sells discount books, but they don't always have books that I'm interested in) and to buy these books for my kindle, I have to spend $7-$10 which I'm not willing to do for an electronic book. Grr :/
