Congratulations!
LOL, I see you hit both ends of the spy thriller spectrum with Ian Fleming's Moonraker and John LeCarre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy! I went through all of the Fleming's Bond novels in 2011-12 and enjoyed them more than I thought I would; but I absolutely fell in love with George Smiley this year when I also read "TTSS!" :-)
Oh, The Remains of the Day! I remember struggling with that for most of the way through but so glad that I persisted in finishing it! That ending! Well, it really hit me ;-)
And finally, a Now-it's-Funny Story about The Girl with the Pearl Earring:
A few years ago, I read "Pearl Earring" as part of a Art Reading Challenge. I became so intrigued by the descriptions of the paintings in the book, that when I went back East that year, I had to go to The National Gallery to check out the Vermeers (five!) that they had on display. Meanwhile, my daughter was killing time somewhere else on the grounds... This past Spring, I could not get DH or daughter interested in a quick trip down to San Francisco to check out the iconic Girl with a Pearl Earring which is on loan to the US while its home in the Netherlands is being renovated. Soon, the painting went even farther afield to NYC and so I missed my chance... So very recently, my daughter was reading Chasing Vermeer (by Blue Balliet) and she actually said, "I wish I could go see some Vermeer paintings." That "thunk" you heard? That was my head hitting the desk :-/
Again, Congratulations! It looks like you had a great climb! :-)

And Tanya, I love all spy novels but must admit that le Carre is my absolute favourite. The Fleming novels would come more under 'sentimental' favs but they are fun. Would love to see a Vermeer but I don't think one will ever make it's way down this way. Shame on your daughter! lol
