Introductions

I am a retired US Air Force medical officer and now work for the VA but can't wait until I grow up and am able to volunteer at the library and read even more.

Is there a central discussion board where I will find comments about this month's book - Defending Jacob?

Hopefully I am posting this in the correct place.Very many thanks for accepting me into the group, my tastes in reading are many and varied. At one point it was a case of if it had the written word then I would read it. This would possibly be because of my time spent in the Royal Navy. Those days are behind me now, and even though I am English I have retired to Bulgaria. The winter months are ideal for reading.

Hi Douglas, I'm hoping to read Gone Girl soon. I've heard some really good stuff about it.

This is a great place for it. The more you browse around, the more you find. Watch the threads too- I'll be doing something this week you may enjoy. :)

i live in North Carolina amid great bar-b-q and ACC basketball but i'm a reader. i work in a local university hospital as a radiation therapist treating cancer patients so reading is a great escape from a fairly stressful job. i've been married for 22 years to a man whose inner desire is to be an author and i have an 18 year old son in college studying to work his magic in the film industry.
i read a little of everything but especially enjoy Robert B. Parker (Spenser series and the Cole/Hitch series are my faves); Janet Evanovich; James Patterson; Patricia Cornwell; Carl Hiaasen; Mitch Albom; Margaret Maron; Kathy Reichs; Joanna Fluke; G. A. McKevett; Charlaine Harris; John Jakes-that should be enough to give you an idea of who i like to read : )
Have a good read!

My name is Caroline. I live in The Netherlands and I'm an English teacher. I love reading (and writing)and although I read a lot of mystery novels at the moment I love lots of genres, from 19th cent. lit. to horror and everything in between. Looking forward to see what's going on in this group.

Thank you for inviting me in to the group

Betty - I, like you, HAVE to read a series in order. I don't understand how people can do it any differently. I've grown to love Lucas Davenport but I also follow Tempe Brennan and Rizolli and Isles as well as Laurie and Jack Montgomery. Laurie and Jack are the ones I really grew up with since I read my first book with them at age 12.
Taylor - I admire you. My brother is going into social work (specifically psychiatry to help abused children) and it is not an easy task at all. I'm sure it's rewarding in the end, but man....it's a lot of work to get there.
We're glad to welcome you both to the group! Spend some time browsing the discussions when you can, we have a lot of fun stuff going on.

Let's describe the suspect. 49, male, probably below average height but above average weight, mostly brown hair, mostly grey goatee, hazel(ish) eyes, depending on the light, no distinguishing marks or features. Married, no children (unless you count three cats and a dog and a horse, though the horse is really my wife's and has his own apartment-not to mention dozens of birds, squirrels and so on that sponge off of us at the back yard feeders).
I'm a fan of a lot of different genre literatures, including obviously mysteries and thrillers, though I also have a soft spot for SF and horror, and comics. Not so keen on contemporary literary fiction, though I read some, but quite a big fan of older (pre-twentieth-century) literary fiction. I read a lot, averaging a couple of books a week, usually. Not as fast as I used to be, though--the eyes are slowing down, and th ebifocals don't help....
I teach English at a university but have never offered a course in mystery/thriller fiction. It'd be a cool thing to do, though. I have taught courses in SF and Fantasy, children's lit, and comics.

I'm new to this group. I've been on Goodreads for a while, but I'm still finding my way around. I read lots of different sorts of mysteries and thrillers--staight novels, too--don't care about genre as long as they're well-written. I write mysteries, too, the latest coming out next summer with Viking/Penguin. It's the first of a projected series about an NYC literary agent.
It's my ninth book, but the first time I've written a series, which is strange because I love reading them. Would love to know how people here feel about series as opposed to stand-alone mysteries. I blogged about it here on my Goodreads page--don't know how to link to it, but my name's Barbara Rogan. Nice to meet you all, and I look forward to lots of good discussions. Love that you're reading Ron Rash; his SERENA was a book I've read twice.

Hi,Leigh Anne, it is great to have you in the group with us.

Hi, Barbara! Good questio about series/stand-alones. As far as series vs stand-alones, I guess I tend to read more series than stand-alone ones, but I don't think that's so much a matter of preference as that there are just so many series out there to choose from. I'm trying to think of what the last mystery was that I read that WASN'T part of a series, and I'm having a hard time coming up with many. I've read a few stand-alones from Hard Case crime recently--old Lawrence Blocks, David Goodises, one by Day Keene, and so on. I tend to choose by authors I like or have heard good things about, but most of them seem to write series--or a mix of series and non-series (e.g. Donald E. Westlake). Certainly, I wouldn't opt NOT to read something either because it was or was not part of a series.

But I totally agree with you on where the focus needs to be: on writing compelling books.

Hey!
I was just invited to this group and it looks like the perfect group for me. I'm always reading mysteries and thrillers and seeking people to discuss them with.
Hmm. About me. I'm 23, married for a bit over a year (met my husband in high school), and working full time in jewelry sales at my families business. I read 28 books last year and this year I set my GoodReads challenge for 40- and I'm already ahead!!
Currently, I'm reading 'Island Of Lost Girls' by Jennifer McMahon and really enjoying it. I'll probably be finished tonight.
