Jamie Accidentally posted this in the wrong place!

Hey!
I was just invited to this group and it looks like the perfect group for me. I'm always reading mysteries and thrillers and seeking people to discuss them with.

Hmm. About me. I'm 23, married for a bit over a year (met my husband in high school), and working full time in jewelry sales at my families business. I read 28 books last year and this year I set my GoodReads challenge for 40- and I'm already ahead!!

Currently, I'm reading 'Island Of Lost Girls' by Jennifer McMahon and really enjoying it. I'll probably be finished tonight.

Jamie Chiara- I miss the days when I could read during my commute! I lived in NYC and took the subway probably about 3+ hours a week and often took the train to NJ (about 45 min each way) and that was my favorite time to read. I used to be so much better at zoning things out, too!

message 405: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Thomas (benjaminthomas) Hi all and thanks to Jenni for inviting me to this group. I am a voracious and eclectic reader and like most of you, have far too many books that I want to read than I have time for. My earlier years were mostly devoted to sci-fi, fantasy, and thrillers but as I grow older I have come to appreciate the mystery and crime genre more and more.

I am a retired US Air Force medical officer and now work for the VA but can't wait until I grow up and am able to volunteer at the library and read even more.

Ralph | 3 comments Hi, I'm Ralph. I live in Babylon (Long Island), NY where I practice labor & employment law. I look forward to sharing thoughts & ideas with the group.
Is there a central discussion board where I will find comments about this month's book - Defending Jacob?

message 408: by Neil (new)

Neil (krispbaykon) Good Evening Everyone,
Hopefully I am posting this in the correct place.Very many thanks for accepting me into the group, my tastes in reading are many and varied. At one point it was a case of if it had the written word then I would read it. This would possibly be because of my time spent in the Royal Navy. Those days are behind me now, and even though I am English I have retired to Bulgaria. The winter months are ideal for reading.

message 422: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Hello everyone! I'm Valerie and i just joined the group and am liking what i see so far.
i live in North Carolina amid great bar-b-q and ACC basketball but i'm a reader. i work in a local university hospital as a radiation therapist treating cancer patients so reading is a great escape from a fairly stressful job. i've been married for 22 years to a man whose inner desire is to be an author and i have an 18 year old son in college studying to work his magic in the film industry.
i read a little of everything but especially enjoy Robert B. Parker (Spenser series and the Cole/Hitch series are my faves); Janet Evanovich; James Patterson; Patricia Cornwell; Carl Hiaasen; Mitch Albom; Margaret Maron; Kathy Reichs; Joanna Fluke; G. A. McKevett; Charlaine Harris; John Jakes-that should be enough to give you an idea of who i like to read : )
Have a good read!

Betty (bettybrock) Hello everyone. My name is Betty and I live in Nashville. I love to read in general with mysteries and thrillers at the top of my list. I'm one of those RIO people. I MUST read series in order. I feel as if I have grown up wtih Lucas Davenport, Dave Robicheaux and Harry Bosch. I look forward to participating in this group.

message 433: by Taylor (new)

Taylor Hello all! My name is Taylor and I live in Edmonton, Canada. I too enjoy the stress relief afforded by reading as I spend my days doing social work with families who have child welfare involvement. My favourite mystery authors include Mark Billingham, Martha Grimes, Ian Rankin, Stephen Booth, and Peter Robinson. I look forward to discovering new authors but with some trepidation as when I do find someone new, I have to read everything, in order, and now! Kind of creates a backlog with my other reading! This looks like a vibrant group that I'm excited to be part of.

message 434: by Leigh (new)

Leigh | 6291 comments Welcome Taylor! It sounds like you have an job.

message 435: by Mindy (new)

Mindy (undertowsoul) Hello Betty and Taylor!

Betty - I, like you, HAVE to read a series in order. I don't understand how people can do it any differently. I've grown to love Lucas Davenport but I also follow Tempe Brennan and Rizolli and Isles as well as Laurie and Jack Montgomery. Laurie and Jack are the ones I really grew up with since I read my first book with them at age 12.

Taylor - I admire you. My brother is going into social work (specifically psychiatry to help abused children) and it is not an easy task at all. I'm sure it's rewarding in the end, but man....it's a lot of work to get there.

We're glad to welcome you both to the group! Spend some time browsing the discussions when you can, we have a lot of fun stuff going on.

Linda (beaulieulinda117gmailcom) | 1403 comments Welcome Taylor, I agree with Mindy, you have quite the job. I know its not easy. I'm from Ontario.

message 437: by Dominick (new)

Dominick (dominickgrace) Well, I'm new to this group, joined a few days ago, so ... what should I tell you about myself? Or should I just be mysterious?

Let's describe the suspect. 49, male, probably below average height but above average weight, mostly brown hair, mostly grey goatee, hazel(ish) eyes, depending on the light, no distinguishing marks or features. Married, no children (unless you count three cats and a dog and a horse, though the horse is really my wife's and has his own apartment-not to mention dozens of birds, squirrels and so on that sponge off of us at the back yard feeders).

I'm a fan of a lot of different genre literatures, including obviously mysteries and thrillers, though I also have a soft spot for SF and horror, and comics. Not so keen on contemporary literary fiction, though I read some, but quite a big fan of older (pre-twentieth-century) literary fiction. I read a lot, averaging a couple of books a week, usually. Not as fast as I used to be, though--the eyes are slowing down, and th ebifocals don't help....

I teach English at a university but have never offered a course in mystery/thriller fiction. It'd be a cool thing to do, though. I have taught courses in SF and Fantasy, children's lit, and comics.

message 438: by Mindy (new)

Mindy (undertowsoul) Welcome to the group Dominick! Sounds like you bring a lot to the table. I am pretty recently getting into the SF and Fantasy genres (just the past 5 years or so) so I'm looking forward to seeing more of what you enjoy to get some recommendations for myself. I enjoy a lot of pre-twentieth century writers as well although I have to take them in small doses. I have pretty bad ADD and having to throw that much concentration into a book (to fully understand the language) can be a bit difficult for me, but I love the stories anyway. But again, welcome! We're glad to have you here.

message 439: by Dominick (new)

Dominick (dominickgrace) Glad to be here. I read a lot, so you should see books in various genres turning up in my updates pretty regularly.

message 440: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Rogan (barbararogan) | 16 comments Hi everybody,

I'm new to this group. I've been on Goodreads for a while, but I'm still finding my way around. I read lots of different sorts of mysteries and thrillers--staight novels, too--don't care about genre as long as they're well-written. I write mysteries, too, the latest coming out next summer with Viking/Penguin. It's the first of a projected series about an NYC literary agent.

It's my ninth book, but the first time I've written a series, which is strange because I love reading them. Would love to know how people here feel about series as opposed to stand-alone mysteries. I blogged about it here on my Goodreads page--don't know how to link to it, but my name's Barbara Rogan. Nice to meet you all, and I look forward to lots of good discussions. Love that you're reading Ron Rash; his SERENA was a book I've read twice.

Hi, Barbara! Good questio about series/stand-alones. As far as series vs stand-alones, I guess I tend to read more series than stand-alone ones, but I don't think that's so much a matter of preference as that there are just so many series out there to choose from. I'm trying to think of what the last mystery was that I read that WASN'T part of a series, and I'm having a hard time coming up with many. I've read a few stand-alones from Hard Case crime recently--old Lawrence Blocks, David Goodises, one by Day Keene, and so on. I tend to choose by authors I like or have heard good things about, but most of them seem to write series--or a mix of series and non-series (e.g. Donald E. Westlake). Certainly, I wouldn't opt NOT to read something either because it was or was not part of a series.

message 445: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Rogan (barbararogan) | 16 comments Thanks, Linda. Dominick, I also tend to read a lot of series, since I'll continue with anyone that really grabs me. But I read a bunch of good stand-alone novels this year, including all three of Gillian Ryan's books, OBLIVION by Peter Abraham, and THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME by Donald Ray Pollock. What I'm wondering about is what makes a character compelling enough to carry a whole series...but maybe this isn't the right place to talk about that?

message 446: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Rogan (barbararogan) | 16 comments It's certainly true that published writers have a big advantage over self-published when it comes to marketing, reviews, and PR. But all writers are expected to help themselves these days by having an online presence and cultivating a fan base.

But I totally agree with you on where the focus needs to be: on writing compelling books.
