I write under the name James Roth for the good, though sometimes irritating, reason that I share my birth name with a famous comedic actor. While using that name no doubt would bring sales, it would also bring disappointment to his many fans once they saw that "me is not he." Also, while in the odd moment I think I'm funny, I write historical mysteries, crime and suspense rather than comedy, though I've published a few children's stories editors told me were funny:-) Of course, they may have been trying to be funny.
So mysteries, crime and suspense, oh yes, I read them all. Love the classics--Stout, Chandler, MacDonald (John D.), Christie, James, etc.--along with Perry, Eco, Pattison, Muller, Burke, Connelly, Chesney, Parker, Rankin, etc., etc. Also dip into science fiction when I have the time.
Like many of my generation, I started with the Hardy Boys, some Nancy Drew, Rick Brandt--all the series--graduated to pulps, then to Doyle, and off we went.
Worked as a writer and editor for other people most of my career--writing fiction on the side--until I took an early out to write fiction full time.
Glad to be a part of Goodreads and this group.
Anyone can contact me here or through jproth.com or @parsroth. Happy reading, my friends.
Hi everyone. I'm new to the site and thought I would say hi :)

Historical fiction is so broad of a market, advice usually is just as broad. Much depends upon the era, but I've found that in addition to reading (or at least perusing) several different references is key. This includes online and print. For me, university libraries are great for period photos since many have collections, and I always try to find primary source material, e.g., diaries, letters, newsreel, which helps me hone in on how people dressed, moved about, and spoke.

In terms of taste, I read across all crime genres (for pleasure and research) but find myself coming back to Golden Age books as they are pure escapism and I like working through the plot twists.

Thank you Cheryl, lovely to meet you

Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I am an avid crime reader (the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connolly is my favourite) and also write a light-hearted crime series set in India, for fans of The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series. The first book in my series The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra is a Times Saturday bestseller, Waterstones Book Club selection and Amazon Best Debut pick. This 2015 hit introduces readers to Inspector Ashwin Chopra of the Mumbai police as he moves through the turbulent, colourful fabric of modern Indian society in search of a murderer, whilst simultaneously coming to grips with the surreal dilemma of caring for a one-year-old baby elephant that has been sent into his care. “Endearing and gripping” ~ The Sunday Times; “Colour and atmosphere flows out of every page” ~ The Daily Express; “Utterly charming” ~ The Guardian

Ive been writing all summer - busy working on the third in the series - but managing to read a lot too. Lot of domestic noir - most of which, sadly, isn't that good. But I just read the one that started it all - Gone Girl - and thought it was terrific. So definitely a recommend from me.

This story is part of a trilogy and working on it has definitely sharpened my skills as a writer.
I've recently been reading a lot of Lee Child, Michael Connolly and Jonathan Kellerman and have broken down their three very different styles. Glad to be part of the group.

I'm looking forward to reading your title.

Great, I'll look it up.

thanx Kirsten!

I've just joined the group. I'm a mystery writer and reader. Looking forward to your reading suggestions. I'm a fan of Linwood Barclay, Tana French and Sophie Hannah. Glad to be here.
