Hello,I write under the name James Roth for the good, though sometimes irritating, reason that I share my birth name with a famous comedic actor. While using that name no doubt would bring sales, it would also bring disappointment to his many fans once they saw that "me is not he." Also, while in the odd moment I think I'm funny, I write historical mysteries, crime and suspense rather than comedy, though I've published a few children's stories editors told me were funny:-) Of course, they may have been trying to be funny.
So mysteries, crime and suspense, oh yes, I read them all. Love the classics--Stout, Chandler, MacDonald (John D.), Christie, James, etc.--along with Perry, Eco, Pattison, Muller, Burke, Connelly, Chesney, Parker, Rankin, etc., etc. Also dip into science fiction when I have the time.
Like many of my generation, I started with the Hardy Boys, some Nancy Drew, Rick Brandt--all the series--graduated to pulps, then to Doyle, and off we went.
Worked as a writer and editor for other people most of my career--writing fiction on the side--until I took an early out to write fiction full time.
Glad to be a part of Goodreads and this group.
Anyone can contact me here or through jproth.com or @parsroth. Happy reading, my friends.
Hi everyone. I'm new to the site and thought I would say hi :)
Hi--I'm David. I write the Buckeye Barrister Mystery Series. I've also been trying my hand at historical fiction. Any guidance anybody can give me in that department would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, David.Historical fiction is so broad of a market, advice usually is just as broad. Much depends upon the era, but I've found that in addition to reading (or at least perusing) several different references is key. This includes online and print. For me, university libraries are great for period photos since many have collections, and I always try to find primary source material, e.g., diaries, letters, newsreel, which helps me hone in on how people dressed, moved about, and spoke.
Best, JP
If I am unfamiliar with something, I will use Wikipedia or an online atlas or major reference to get a general overview. In some cases that also yields an interesting point or thought, but after that quick glance I go to sites of reputable historical societies, state/county repositories, online collections from university and specialty libraries, academician sites, etc. I rarely use any other general or individual online sites, except in the case of documented oral histories, or verified sources. Goes back to my days as a reporter and researcher, I guess.JP
Hello, I'm Alex. Because I love to read mystery novels, I wrote one and am currently working on the second in the series. In terms of taste, I read across all crime genres (for pleasure and research) but find myself coming back to Golden Age books as they are pure escapism and I like working through the plot twists.
Hello.I am Emilee and I am 24 years old. I am taking online classes to get a degree in criminal justice/human services. My favorite books to read are legal thrillers, mysteries and true crime

Hi allJust wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I am an avid crime reader (the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connolly is my favourite) and also write a light-hearted crime series set in India, for fans of The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series. The first book in my series The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra is a Times Saturday bestseller, Waterstones Book Club selection and Amazon Best Debut pick. This 2015 hit introduces readers to Inspector Ashwin Chopra of the Mumbai police as he moves through the turbulent, colourful fabric of modern Indian society in search of a murderer, whilst simultaneously coming to grips with the surreal dilemma of caring for a one-year-old baby elephant that has been sent into his care. “Endearing and gripping” ~ The Sunday Times; “Colour and atmosphere flows out of every page” ~ The Daily Express; “Utterly charming” ~ The Guardian

Ive been writing all summer - busy working on the third in the series - but managing to read a lot too. Lot of domestic noir - most of which, sadly, isn't that good. But I just read the one that started it all - Gone Girl - and thought it was terrific. So definitely a recommend from me.

Resilient Transitions is a fun fictional book set in the future. Action/adventure with humor. Find it on Amazon.com

I'm looking forward to reading your title.
thanks, Don. It's a joy to write about India and these characters. My aim was always to take readers on this journey to the heart of modern India, particularly Mumbai, so I hope I've achieved that. I see you've been reading Michael Connolly. I love the Bosch novels and recommend them to anyone.
