Josh (joshlanyon) | 3 comments Hello! Just a quick intro.

I'm an author -- I write as Josh Lanyon and Diana Killian (DON'T WORRY, I WILL NOT SPAM YOU) and a long time mystery fanatic. I'm married to Kevin Burton Smith of the Thrilling Detective Website, I perform with the Browne Sisters and George Cavanaugh (Celtic music) and I'm currently working on (among other things) a non-fiction book for McFarland Press on husband and wife sleuths in detective fiction.

I lurk a lot. ;-D

Celtic music? I really enjoy it but it's not exactly common in WI. Last fall went on a v interesting trip to the Canadian maritimes and one of our stops was the Celtic college in novascotia. Very interesting

Kevin Scott Olson (kevinscottolson) | 1 comments Greetings everyone,

New member Kevin Scott Olson here. I'm an avid reader, particularly in the thriller/suspense/adventure/espionage genres. Favorite authors include Dean Koontz, Michael Crichton, and golden oldies such as John D. MacDonald. I look forward to trying the book-of-the-month group.

I live in southern California, and my interests include travel (recently returned from a trip to the Baltics and Russia) outdoor sports such as swimming and golf, and the worlds of politics, economics, business, and of course a good read.

I'm also an author, with a debut thriller novel recently released, and will abide by the author protocols.

You can check out my bio at http://www.manhattanroulette.com/inde...

If anyone's up for it, I'd appreciate your opinions/reviews.
Thanks

message 3014: by Walt (new)

Walt Cody | 4 comments Thanks, Christine. From your bio, it sounds like you're doing good works and doing them perhaps in the face of adversity. Which gives me the impression that my novel would be too tough for your taste. (that's a compliment, btw.)

Hi Terry, I so agree with you! In addition to twilight, I never want to see anything about vampires on a suggested reading list either. I joined Goodreads mainly to track my favorite indie author, Al Rennie. He writes great, funny mysteries, sometimes with a smidgon of romance but by no means a romance novel. Kind of like Janet Evanovich, mainly. I was hoping Goodreads would have more info on him, but not so far. At least I found all his books and will keep looking for more. Look forward to chatting with you!

Hi, and welcome! No, I haven't read the new author, but loved the originals. I tend to find an author I like and read everything I can find by them. I've retread my Rex Stouts so many times, sometimes I feel that if you quote a couple lines I can name the book! Who are your top three?

Elmore Leonard, Ross Thomas (try "Briarpatch" ) Raymond Chandler. Many others but those guys I can reread

Alice-Elizabeth (Prolific Reader Alice) (marriedtobooks44) | 1 comments I'm Alice and I am a teen reader/book blogger from the UK. I love reading thrillers and mysteries. I've grown up with reading Agatha Christie's stories and branched out onto thrillers such as Gone Girl, The Husband's Secret and books by David Baldacci :)

message 3020: by Chris (last edited Feb 18, 2016 07:40AM) (new)

Chris Hi, I'm Chris from Houston, Texas (not one of the crazy Texans you have heard about...honest!) I'm new to GR and am finding it a GREAT help in bookmarking "want to reads" as well as keeping track of books I've read! I've always had a terrible memory for authors and titles, so I can't simply blame this on my age. :)
I'm not sure that I'm a group-person, but thanks for having me!
I love mysteries /crime novels of all stripes-from (some) cozies to gritty police procedurals. The only thing I really try to avoid these days are plots with serial-killers, especially anything with torture/ritual killing of animals or people. In addition to the "ugh" factor, to me, these are lazy and over-done plot devices. You would think there's a serial-killer on every block. (I AM keeping an eye on my neighbor across the street, though. :) )
My three favorite writers are James Lee Burke, and the late-lamented Ruth Rendell and Elizabeth Peters, so you can see my tastes are all over the map, but they all share a consistent high-grade quality of writing and plotting, and an over-arching intelligence and dedication to the hard work of their craft.
We've had some gorgeous, warm, blue sky weather here lately; hope all is well in your cozy corner of the world.

Being a Texan, I am a pimento cheese addict and still use my late mother's recipe (well, there is no recipe, but I use the same ingredients) and grating technique (Mouli Grater). I have only recently, at 63, admitted that there are one or two commercial versions that are up to snuff; I'm sure yours is great!

message 3022: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Saunders | 3 comments Hi I'm Lorraine. I'm from New Zealand and have been an avid mystery reader ever since I discovered Enid Blyton's multiple mystery series.
I have decided to join a book club to keep exploring the genre as the last few books that I have read have been very predictable, so I am hoping that a few gems will show up through this group! I've already noted a few authors from these comments that I will be looking into! I plan to start with the March book and look forwards to discussing it with everyone.

message 3023: by April (new)

April | 1 comments Hi I'm April. I'm 25 from Rhode Island. I am a single mom to a beautiful little 5 year old boy named Jason. I love to read thrillers and mysteries/crime books. :) That would be my first choice to read. Right now I am reading Desperate and The Face on the Milk Carton. If anyone has read those don't feel the need to hesitate to tell me what you liked and didn't like about them in a message to me! :) I hope to get to know some of you! Thanks for letting me introduce myself! xD

message 3024: by Steven (new)

Steven Williamson (stevewz) Hello! My name is Steven Scott Williamson and I am new to the mystery-thriller genre. I have published two fantasy novels (Ohlen's Arrow and Ohlen's Bane) with the third coming out this spring, Paragon's Call, to finish the trilogy, "The Taesian Chronicles".

My fourth novel will be a murder mystery, and I'm very excited about it. Goodreads has been fantastic as a source for information and tips about what makes a good murder mystery/thriller and I've enjoyed meeting the readers who enjoy the genre. I hope my first foray into the genre will be a book that fans enjoy reading. With it being new territory for me, I appreciate the advice and comments people leave here on Goodreads about what works and what doesn't.

Happy reading!

I'm a huge detective novel junky and love a good mystery, also Sci-Fi and epic historical fiction. I just published my first book and am working on the sequel, so I'm looking for some new novels for inspiration/procrastination.

ReneE (reneaz) Hi all,
My name's Rene and I live in Phoenix AZ (originally from the Phila., PA area). Retired about 2 yrs ago and have been blazing through so many books lately -- just finished: the latest John Rebus book by Ian Rankin, CJ Box's latest Joe Pickett book and James Grippando's latest Jack Swyteck book. Loved them all! It's hard to find a local book club that reads what I love -- which are mysteries!! I think I will love the choices here! Happy to be part of the group.

I enjoy books by James Patterson, Doug Corleone, Stieg Larsson, etc. I'm a bit new to Goodreads and so am still learning how it all works. I've written a legal mystery series and my first book, Land Sharks, will be published in May. I'm looking forward to hearing your book recommendations and reviews. Feel free to friend me.

Alison Solomon (goodreadscomalisonrsolomon) Hi all,
I'm Alison R. Solomon and new to this group. I've been on goodreads for a while but haven't joined groups up until now. I'm an avid reader and have been all my life, and I'm also an author. The types of books I enjoy are "Gone Girl" and "Girl on the Train" both of which have been described as Domestic Noir. This is the genre I tried to emulate in my new novel, Along Came the Rain, due out next month. There are so many amazing books out there, it's so hard to keep up with reading them, but I look forward to getting ideas from members of this group.

Um, let me think, more than twenty years? It was an overnight stop in a field that was not exactly luxurious, but all we needed was a pitch and some water.
