Steve Farawell | 3 comments I am a big fan of James Patterson and John Sandford. I just ordered some hardcover books from Thriftbooks. They have some good buys. I'm going to start reading Karin Slaughter's novels, GRANT COUNTY.. My regulars are too high in price right now. I've read all the Prey series up to and including #23 and Virgil Flowers to #6. I like Stuart Woods too- Stone Barrington. all caught up with him also, except for the new ones out. Basically, these are my best authors.

Hi Steve,

We are practically neck and neck on the Prey and Virgil Flowers series. I have read up to #24 "Field of Prey" and #6 "Mad River" in those. I am quite far behind in the Alex Cross series having read only 12 of those.

I have not read anything by Karin Slaughter or Stuart Woods, however. I have a couple of David Baldacci books waiting to be read and these will be my first books by him.

I have just begun to read "The Passage" by Justin Cronin.

Vikki (silverstarz) | 47 comments I thought I'd already posted here but seems like I haven't. Oh well, better late than never.

I'm Vikki, from Northern Ireland. Work as a lawyer. I've been a bookworm for as long as I can remember! As a kid I loved mysteries like Famous Five series. As an adult I started reading John Grisham and Michael connolly, but am always adding new authors to my list. And I'm always keen to find more. At the moment I'm reading The Snowman by Jo Nesbo and loving it. This is my first book by him. A few other authors I like include Alex Gray, Debra Webb, and Sue Grafton.

Welcome Irish "cousin. Just read a nonfiction article by (a real cousin) John Makem based on a scroll he uncovered in the National Library of Ireland--Tory raids…1674. Very well done. In the annual O'Neill Journal. I'm a murder/mystery writer myself. Check out BITS and PIECES.

Welcome to the group

Kathy | -19 comments I think that I've posted here before, but I can't seem to keep track of whether I have introduced myself, or not.

Anyway, I am a lover of mystery/murder/detective stories. The last one I read, months ago, was "Gone Girl", I read it before I saw the movie, and I must say,..I liked the book much better. I usually do. Anyway, I'm always looking for a clever, unusual, mystery. I also read "Leaving Time", which was an outstanding mystery, and more, but I haven't found any, for awhile, that I could say I really enjoyed.

Usually, I can guess the plot, and that always ruins it for me. Please post the ones that surprised you!

Nanci McGraw (nancimcgraw) | 1 comments First time in a group on GoodReads:
[[[ I scurry over lush burgundy and gold carpet and down the wide hallway, stopping at the massive open doors of the five star hotel ballroom. Whoosh...what a decibel level buzz from what must be a thousand voices in animated discussion! Men and women in sartorial splendor are laughing, listening, and talking while sipping golden liquid from sparkling stemware. I smile and step spritely into the gargantuan grand room, thinking to myself in 18 point Arial font, "I love books and mysteries TOO!" ]]]

I'm Nanci, a seasoned adult - "ha", wife, mother, and new grandmother, living close to San Diego, CA ! I'm an author of two (non-fiction books and many articles) and happy reader (of many fiction & non). I've been getting acclimated to the site, setting up my profile, enjoying the features, and generally finding my way around. (I don't want to mess up here or transgress group protocol!) Lee Atterbury | 17 comments Hi I'm Lee. I'm 66 years old and unable to retire because I have so many animals to feed. I live on a small horse farm near Middleton, Wisconsin. I'm addicted to books and go through a couple of novels a week. Right now I'm reading Moonlight Mile. I just finished Revival. I'd like recommendations. Some of my favorites are John Sanford, Lee Child, Ian Rankin, Kate Atkinson...

message 2774: by V.R. (new)

V.R. Barkowski (vrbarkowski) | 4 comments Hey, everyone! I'm VR from the Witch City, better known as [snowbound] Salem, Massachusetts. No need to feel sorry for me—I'm a native Californian and still get excited about snow and cold. While not new to Goodreads, I am new to Groups and hope you'll forgive me if I mess up.

Now to the nuts and bolts. I'm a recovering sociologist and avid reader who also happens to write fiction. My preferred reads are non-traditional mysteries and dark suspense. A few favorite authors: Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine, Patricia Highsmith, Michael Robotham, Tana French, and Gillian Flynn. A final bit of trivia: I prefer standalones to series.

message 2778: by Callie (new)

Callie Humphries | 2 comments Hey, Lee. I can honestly say I've never read a crime novel with horses. I've seen Equus, does that count? I'm writing a crime/revenge serial, with some pretty comedic undertones.

message 2780: by Barry (new)

Barry Cleary (bcleary22) | -32 comments Welcome Lee, V.R., and Callie!

Lee,

If you like John Sandford, as much as I do, you might like Jeffery Deaver and William Kent Krueger. David Baldacci is similar to Lee Child and Ian Rankin.
Lastly, you might enjoy Justin Cronin's The Passage. I just read it about a month ago and it was very enjoyable.

message 2781: by Lee (new)

Lee Atterbury | 17 comments Barry, I've read all those and liked them. How about Brian Freeman?

message 2782: by Lee (new)

Lee Atterbury | 17 comments I need feedback. I'm finishing the manuscript of my new crime novel with horses. The problem is the word count. Right now the count is 48,000 and with some minor additions it should get to 50,000. I know this is kind of short. What do you think?

I have not read any of Brian Freeman's books (as of yet). I have read a book by Robert Dugoni "My Sister's Grave" that was a good read. He might be one you haven't read yet.

message 2794: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Wichorek | -324 comments I love Ian Rankin, Reginald Hill, Peter Lovesey, and many of the Scandinavian authors, like Jo Nesbo and Karinn Fossum.

message 2795: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Patterson I love a good mystery or thriller. Especially one with a twisted ending - you know the type. Can't put it down as each chapter carries momentum to the next. Character development or rather intimacy, where the reader gets to know the main characters, down to forming a picture in the reader's mind. Good books teach me something new, delight and instruct along the way. Kathy Reichs, James Patterson, Paula Hawkins... there are lots of great story tellers out there...

message 2796: by Lee (new)

Lee Atterbury | 17 comments Nancy, Would you like to learn about horses in the context of a crime novel?

I second all those authors, Margaret! I've also been working my way through Steven Saylor, Charles Todd (both quite different from Rankin, Hill, et al) and another big favorite: Ed McBain.
