Ava Catherine Hi Joy! We are thrilled to have you with us! This is the place to meet new book loving friends.

I understand about the Alabama Crimson Tide. Everyone in Tuscaloosa wears crimson and white! : ) My son teaches at the University of Alabama, so my husband and I have visited quite a few times. : ) It is a lovely place. And my roommate in college was from Birmingham, so I cannot tell you how many times I have been to your wonderful city. I love Frank Stitt's Highland Bar and Grill.

peg (mcicutti) We are expecting 3 more inches of snow tonight too. Fortunately I don't have to leave for work until 2PM.

message 212: by Rob (new)

Rob Twinem (runner56) Well I am not going to work....let's hope there is no crime today!...bad day yesterday. My youngest 15 year old had her parents evening and I had to get to her school between 4.00 and 7.00... unfortunately the magistrate court I was working in did not finish until 5.30pm and I then had 1 hour of cycling before I reached the school. I got there with some 15mins to spare cold but glad to have made it :) however as I was speaking to the teachers wham!! a migraine headache, my vision went and I was sick (I get migraines periodically)so I left...got on my bike...and "wobbled" home. I still have the remains of the headache this morn and was going to attempt to cycle to work!! but then I looked out and saw the weather...I think I'll stay at home :((

message 213: by Ava Catherine (new)

Ava Catherine Trev, I hope you are feeling better. I truly understand about migraines, and mine have been kicking into high gear since Christmas. My neurologist says they come in cycles during your life, being more active during certain time periods. This week I have had ferocious migraines to the point I throw up from the pain, so I do understand. I hope you sleep and feel much better very soon.

message 214: by peg (new)

peg (mcicutti) Jenni, I think it has to something to do with the amount of moisture in the air. When it is extremely cold, it is more difficult for the air to retain moisture. When the air is dry, there is less chance of precipitation.

Thanks Connie
It seems we have migraines in common and it sounds like you have them very bad. I have always had headaches they are classical migraines with the aura and feeling of nausea, I usually get 6-8 per year, which is bearable but it sounds like you have a greater frequency. I would say my headaches are caused by stress..ie if I am dashing about, I was running late yesterday left court late and had to get to youngest daughters school by a certain time...just made it and as I was talking to one of her teachers I got the"aura" but continued talking. I left soon afterwards and tried to be ill outside school...got on my bicycle and rode home hot bath...off to bed.
This morning we had snow! and in the UK we grind to a halt so could not ride bike and no buses were operating so no work!..it meant I am able to rest today and gradually am returning to normal (although it can take 3 days for me to feel ok again) I do not take medicine as have found that nothing works and so just grin and bear it

message 216: by Ava Catherine (last edited Jan 18, 2013 06:57AM) (new)

Ava Catherine Do you take a preventive each day?

I have at least one or two a month, but in cold weather I get more and may have three or four in a month. I am out of commission for days if I have a really bad one. Stress, cold, change in weather patterns, strong smells, alcohol, and cheeses will bring on a migraine. I, too, have the aura and classic migraine. Did you know that Harvard research shows that migraine suffers are more sensitive to the cold? My neurologist shared this information with me.

I sometimes have cluster headaches though, and they are truly painful.

I take a preventive everyday and Maxalt when I get the migraine. It melts on my tongue, so it goes straight to my bloodstream, and I won't throw it up. I can take two a day.

I don't know how in the world you manage without medication. You need to see a neurologist and get some meds!

message 217: by Rob (new)

Rob Twinem (runner56) Connie
I have tried a number of medications the most recent preventative was pizotifen but found they had little or no effect....I suppose I live with them as I have a limited number per year and just deal with it. Today thank goodness I did not go to work, I can still feel the headache but it's gradually disappearing, I quite often know I am going to get one as when stress builds up and I can see from the corner of my eye flashing lights etc. What really annoys me is how often people use the excuse.....Oh I have a migraine...when in reality they do not...for those of us who suffer from migraines know the real pain....shall I start up a health thread so we can open up the discussion?

Nancy | 1 comments Hi -- I'm a newbie and I'm happy to be a member! I'm a mystery-loving fool. I actually joined a book club so I could introduce some non-mysteries into my "book diet." I love classics from the golden era up to modern day writers. I have favorites but I'm always looking for mystery authors I don't know. I'm a train commuter with 45 minutes of uninterrupted reading time twice a day...so I definitely plow through mysteries at record speed!

message 224: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie | 7 comments Hi everyone!
I am a middle school librarian living in South Louisiana. I LOVE a good murder( on paper of course) but like to read all genre.
I began reading early on as an only child and staying with my aunt, I read the entire series of Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew at the time which was about 40 books. I daydreamed for Nancy Drew's life. I read most every Agatha Christie novel in high school and am a big Hitchcock fan. I read a LOT of books each week some from my YA shelves to see what the kids are reading and some just to see if I can put it on my shelves. I did do the Twilight and Sookie Stackhouse series but love the mysteries best. Sue Grafton and Kathy Reichs John Sandford and lots of others. Can't stop reading. I guess it is an addiction of sorts. Next step writing.. I have a couple of characters emerging in my head and soon they will demand to be released. I hope I can put down my books long enough to write them to life.

Bonnie | 7 comments Thanks Brian. Ashton I love to read what my kids are reading and they ask me is this good? I like to be able to give them the gist of it. I can't read them all so I try to remember who likes what and who read what and get them to share thoughts. It is a lively and fun group. We are doing poetry right now... they of course love Poe
