Hah, some years it starts in September and lasts until May. I laugh when people wish for that White Christmas - be careful what you wish for.

Jan Hill (janhill) | 1 comments Hello, my name is Jan Hill and I live in Michigan - Hey AJ! I work part time and also design jewelry and have a new line coming out so I am keeping very busy! I too started reading and loving mysteries with Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. I love to read almost anything, but love mysteries and suspense. Lee Child, Jeffrey Deaver, Laura Lippman - really a long list of favorite authors. I started with Good Reads to find new "Good Reads" and am happy to share authors and favorite books as well as get suggestions from all of you. Nice to meet you! :0)

Michele Hi, my name is Michele and I live in the Richmond, VA area. I'm a 41-year-old single mom to a daughter who is 7 going on 17 and two adorable, rambunctious golden retrievers (brother and sister) who will be 1 this month. I work from home as an actuary for a health insurance company.

I have loved to read as long as I can remember. These days, I don't read nearly as much as I'd like to. As a child, I loved Nancy Drew (I wonder what happened to my collection?) and Agatha Christie. I have many favorite authors; for the mystery genre, I enjoy David Baldacci, Linda Fairstein, Tess Gerritsen, John Grisham, Steve Martini, James Patterson, Kathy Reichs, and Lisa Scottoline. I also enjoy the more lighthearted Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich and the Kinsey Millhone series by Sue Grafton.

I am a sucker for bargain books and as a result have over 150 books I have not read. When I retire, I'm going to the beach to read for months! :)

Paul (paullev) | 21 comments Vince wrote: "Hi Paul

Hi Vince - It's a 1956 movie (story written for the movie), with roots in The Tempest. Details on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forbidde...

message 115: by Garbageman (new)

Garbageman | 46 comments Hi Paul, I vaguely remember reading something about it being based upon a Shakespeare work. Since I last read Shakespeare in high school there is a 40 year lapse there. It is hard to believe that a movie no 50 years old still has an impact upon the genre. I have been to modern plays loosely based upon Shakespeare, but they haven't had the impact. I will say, that Will's marriage handbook " The Taming of the Shrew " really doesn't work out the way he may have thought or the way he may have envisioned it to work 500 years ago.

message 116: by Paul (new)

Paul (paullev) | 21 comments Hi Jim - Yeah, the island in The Tempest is the planet in The Forbidden Planet, and there are other similarities.

message 117: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (mujerdefuego) | 12 comments Salutations everyone! My name is Catherine and I live in Texas. But was educated back east and abroad, attended university back east too.
Prior to my marriage 8 years ago my career sent me all over the globe. Now I consult and we split our time between the city and my family's ranch in Texas.
I am an avid bookworm and read constantly, but mysteries and thrillers are my favourites.
Besides reading I love my Poodles! They are Standard corded and are pulling, gun dog and agility champions, respectively. We also have a rescue toy and a rescue service one for my husband.
I enjoy flying and have had a pilot's licence forever. The HN (High Nerd) and I enjoy Thunder Roadster Racing and rallying. We also took up ballroom dancing after my husband's accident for rehab therapy and have a serious passion for the the tango. I also practise trapezee and silks (aerial yoga).
One of our favourite past times is to head up to the ranch with the pups, hole up and enjoy fine food, whiskey and pass the time curled up reading. I am always on the lookout for new mysteries authors and appreciate any recommendations.

message 118: by Rob (new)

Rob Twinem (runner56) Welcome Catherine..what an amazing life you lead :) so different from my life here in the UK...I love the idea of you hiding out at the ranch with good food, whiskey and of course a book...whereas here in the UK I will be cuddling up to a hot milky drink and sitting in front of a roaring fire...but like you reading a good book....great to have you in the group!

Bill Hi, my name is Bill. I've been on goodreads for a couple of years now and am a member of other clubs. I live on the West Coast of Canada and enjoy mysteries very much. I used to focus on SciFi but for the past few years, I've been shuffling through many mystery writers. I look forward to taking part in your discussions.

message 121: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Parker Hello all,
I'm Michelle living in the beautiful South Bay of Southern California. I've been an avid reader all my life, sometimes to the detriment of my social life! My parents favorite punishment for me when I was younger was to ground me from going to the library and, if you ask my mother, I've always had a very upset stomach (wonder if she's found all those books smushed between the towels in the bathroom!).

My favorite genres are mystery and historical fiction and non-fiction. For me personally, I'm not sure any mystery author has come close to Agatha Christie but I do enjoy Tana French and Michael Connelly. Looking forward to discovering new authors!

message 122: by Leigh (new)

Leigh | 6291 comments Welcome Michelle and Matt!

Michelle--nice to have another Southern California native.

Matt--Aren't you glad the NHL strike is over?

message 123: by Garbageman (new)

Garbageman | 46 comments Hi Michelle, welcome to our group. I love reading California authors, the state is so varied geographically and socially, that depending on the authors home base you are able to get a great difference in writing styles and take on the people of that locale. For example Connelly writes from the southern areas of the state and Martini writes from around the San Francisco area.

Great to have you with us.

Jim

Hi Paul, Thanks for that info. If I get a chance I will take a look at the Tempest. In college I took Brit Lit, but don't believe that they focused on Shakespeare. I remember a play that I saw in high school done by a traveling Broadway Tour group called "Do Your Own Thing" which was supposed to be based upon one of Shakespeares plays, but the highlight of that play was the lead actress taking off her blouse. Which was far more memorable to a 15 year old.

Kat Martin (katmartin) | 3 comments Hi Everyone, I'm Kat Martin, the author of over 55 historical romance and romantic suspense novels. My latest, AGAINST THE ODDS, is on the racks now. I'm thrilled to report that my last few have been NYT bestsellers and that I'm published in over a dozen languages and twice that many countries. My husband, L. J. Martin, is also a novelist, with lots of westerns, mysteries, and thrillers on the racks. We live in Montana and winter in California. Like most writers, I'm an avid reader and love many genres and have lots of favorite authors.

Thanks for the welcome Trev, I don't know if my life is that exciting, but I enjoy it to the hilt with my husband and the pups. My maternal grandparents were British and I spent a lot of time across the pond as a child and for my work. Looking forward to reading your comments.

I used to live in Orange County as well! Actually I've lived in quite a few places in Southern California. I love it here, although, having just recently been to the East Coast (specifically Maine) I have to say I think I liked the East better. I'm a fan of fog, rain and cold and all the historical buildings back East are lovely as is the landscape. There is just such a completely different vibe from California, hard to put your finger on, but it definitely sets a different tone. Perfect for reading mysteries by a fire!

message 137: by Karolyn (last edited Jan 10, 2013 08:23AM) (new)

Karolyn Hello everyone. I live in Lewis Center Ohio just outside of Columubs Ohio with my hubby and our two furry children. However I have raised 4 real children. Two of my husbands and two of mine own. We now have 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Family is very important to us as you can imagine.

I love to read and do a lot of audio books also because of an eye problem. But thank the Lord for Kindles and iPads that make reading so much easier with the font adjustments. But I still miss the smell of real books when I use them.

We have had a lot of cold weather and plenty of snow. Going for a warm up in the next couple of days.

I am interested in trying some of the books you all have read. I tend to stay with the same author over and over again. I get in a rut. I am not sure where I place in Mystery books? I tend to like them all I think? My favorite authors to date are James Patterson, Catherine Coutler, Joy Fielding, Iris Johansen, Lisa Jackson, I even step into the world once in a while of Kay Hooper & Greg Isles. I like Mary Higgins Clark and Sandra Brown. Would you call me a soft Mystery reader? But I am on an adventure to broaden my mystery world.
Thanks for including me. Let the reading begin.

message 138: by Sue Em (new)

Sue Em (sueem) Hi,I'm Sue Em, 62 and an avid reader -- my husband would even say I'm addicted to reading, I'll read product label if there isn't anything else around. While my tastes are eclectic, my love is mysteries and I come by that naturally. Growing up, my father read mysteries and the stack of paperbacks he had finished would give me currency at the used book store. While my favorite mystery authors are Michael Connelly, Jonathan Kellerman and Karin Slaughter, I love a good cozy. Oh, and I'm in Pittsburgh, PA.

Beverley Jones | 61 comments Whoops, I didn't introduce myself before starting gabbing! Sorry guys and gals.

I'm from Cardiff, South Wales and am a former newspaper and BBC journalist and police press officer. I'm now attempting to be a full-time writer as my first two psychological thrillers have been published by Cutting Edge Press (London)in 2012. Don't worry, I'm not trying to flog you anything, I just discovered Goodreads and love to chat about all sorts of books and see what everyone thinks. I like crime/thrillers obviously but am partial to contemporary, sci-fi and classics. I read about a book a week so like variety!
