Garbageman | 46 comments Hi Rebecca, im so glad that you joined. It was 13 below zero a couple of days ago here so your low would be a heat wave for us. I'm a great fan of cats and dogs that need homes.

Jim

Garbageman | 46 comments Hi Nena, thanks for introducing yourself. I haven't tried audio books, so I can't be of much help in that respect, but I sure hope that you find a good one for the trip.

Beth (techeditor) | 1018 comments I'm a technical editor in Michigan, and I'm lucky enough to have had this job for several years. I say "lucky" because of the high unemployment rate here. I edit technical manuals for the army. I live in Romeo and work in Sterling Heights.

Although I am originally from Michigan, I moved to San Diego, California for a job in 1986 and stayed there (San Diego, not the job) for 20 years. I didn't intend to stay so long, but San Diego is a hard place to leave.

I like to read many types of books, although mysteries and crime thrillers are some of my favorites.

Rebecca | 4 comments Yes, I realize it is warm to many of you but to us it is COLD! Plus, when we usually get this it just last 2 or 3 days but it has been about 3 weeks now!

Thanks for having me!

message 56: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 4 comments Yes, I am a native San Diegan so I am a little biased. It would definitely be hard to leave. In the summer I enjoy sitting outside on my patio and reading my books! Right now I stay under the covers and read them! Reading "Creole Belle" by JLB right now.

message 57: by Garbageman (new)

Garbageman | 46 comments Hi Beth, I went to high school in Culver, Indiana and spent many weekends traveling in Michigan to sports events in swimming and canoeing. I was also in the Army and can truly appreciate your diligence in editing the manuals.

Garbageman | 46 comments Hi Clare, thanks for joining and introducing yourself. I looked at the list of books that you have read and can't wait to try some of them out. It's always interesting to pick up a new author, you never know what you will find and it just might lead to a new adventure.

Jim

message 59: by Garbageman (new)

Garbageman | 46 comments Hi Rebecca, as I look out my window at the nearly three feet of snow on the ground, I long jealously at anyplace that the sun shines more than once a week. There are more than a few times that I wish that my forebears had just stayed on the boat a little longer and disembarked in say Jacksonville or St. Thomas. San Diego is a spot of heaven when viewed from our outpost in Central NY.

So glad that you are here with us.

Jim

Paul (paullev) | 21 comments It's great to see people from all over the world here, btw.

I'm just a few miles north of NYC, and still repairing my home after it was it with two trees courtesy of Hurricane Sandy.

message 63: by Garbageman (new)

Garbageman | 46 comments Paul good luck with your repairs. We were flooded out during Hurricane Irene last year. So I have an idea of how difficult recovering from storm damage can be.

message 64: by Paul (new)

Paul (paullev) | 21 comments Thanks, Jim. As you probably know, getting the insurance co to pay up (they're great at collecting premiums) and then coordinating the inside and outside repairs, is in some ways worse than the storm.

Hey, if a skeleton turns up behind some broken panel in the attic, maybe I'll have the makings of a good story ... :)

Brian Benson (bknight47) | 37 comments Hello All: My name is Brian. I write mystery/thriller novels. My first book was published last July. I am currently working o book #2...

message 66: by S.W. (new)

S.W. Hubbard Hi all--it's nice to be part of such a diverse group! I've been a mystery fan since I read my first Bobbsey Twins book. I quickly moved up to Agatha Christie and have stayed a loyal fan of the Brits: P.D. James, Ruth Rendell, Colin Dexter, R.D. Wingfield. Among Americans, I like Robert Crais, Laura Lippman, and Linwood Barclay. I have written four mystery novels: a series set in the Adirondack mountains and a new standalone set in NJ. I live in Morristown, NJ where I teach writing (remedial, expository, and creative) at a community college. I hope you'll check out my post on the author thread here.

message 67: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 4 comments Hi Jim! I certainly am glad I am here and not where you are! As lovely as snow is to look at I don't want to live in it. I will take my "78° and sunny" any day!

message 68: by peg (new)

peg (mcicutti) Hi everyone! My name is Peg. I live in southeastern Pennsylvania near Philadelphia. I work full time as a registered nurse and love to get lost in a good book when I have some down time. Thanks to Jennie I am a newcomer to this group. In spite of the fact that I love a good mystery/thriller I really haven't read many books of that genre. I just downloaded this month's selection on my kindle and I am looking forward to interesting discussions and book recommendations in this group. Nice to "meet" all of you.

message 69: by Mavis (new)

Mavis Lamb | 6 comments Hi everyone! I'm a writer/speaker in Seattle. Very excited to be challenging myself to read 24 books in 2013. was encouraged to hook up with goodreads through a fellow author. Mysteries & Crime Thrillers are my favorite escapism books. Ditto to Terry who mentioned Robert Parker...I still mourn his passing.

message 71: by Amber (new)

Amber Gilchrist | 3 comments Hi, my name is Amber Gilchrist. I'm in my late thirties, married with three kids. I live in suburban New Mexico and even drive a minivan haha. My first and everlasting literary love is mysteries though I love almost all genres. I'm also a writer and I writer primary mysteries for teenagers, though I also write religious romcoms.

Even when I read another kind of genre, say a romance, I really can't read it unless it contains some kind of mystery. What's life without a mystery? :)

message 72: by Leigh (new)

Leigh | 6291 comments Hi Amber and all the other new members who have joined over that last few days. I look forward to discovering new and interesting reads with all of you.

message 73: by Ginny (new)

Ginny (ginneee) | 1 comments Hi, I'm a mom of 2 daughters, married, live in Michigan. I like to scrapbook, but reading is my de-stressor! My favorite books are mysteries, especially series. I also like some paranormal/fantasy, mainly young adult for that genre though.

message 74: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Hello, everyone. My name is Wendy and I am new to the group. I am 54 years old and enjoy reading mysteries and thrillers. Some of my favorite authors are Michael Connelly, Louise Penny, Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child, Michael Robotham (newly discovered!), Carol O'Connell and Laura Lippman. I say some because an exhaustive listing would indeed be exhausting. I live in West Virginia in the United States. I am disabled with Fibromyalgia and Arthritis. I also read popular fiction and some women's fiction (not romance - not a big fan). Most recently I have read The Art Forger by B.A. Shapiro, The Codex by Douglas Preston and A Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling. I am presently reading Book of the Dead by Patricia Cornwall (much improved over some of her later books!) and am looking forward to getting The Black Box by Michael Connelly at the library tomorrow (my number is up, finally!!).

message 75: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Thank you, Jenni. I am something of a night owl so I may end up on here at slow times. I will check out the CSI/NCIS threads to see if I have anything to add.

I'd say that's a magnificent compulsion.

message 78: by Amber (new)

Amber Gilchrist | 3 comments Wow, thirteen years is a long engagement! you must have the wedding very well planned haha. Ginny, I like to scrapbook too. I used to do more of it but it takes a lot of space I don't seem to have anymore.

Currently I'm reading something called "Out of Time, A Time Travel Mystery." I'm not sure what to make of it yet.

message 79: by Paul (new)

Paul (paullev) | 21 comments Jenni wrote: " Do male readers hesitate to pick up a mystery by a female writer? "

I think Agatha Christie is a great writer, and her
The Secret Adversary is on my top 25 all-time favorites list, maybe a little higher.

I haven't read any of Ellis Peters (Edith Pargeter) 's Cadfael books yet, but the TV series is one of my favorites.

message 87: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) I was invited by Trev, one of my friends from across the Atlantic, to join this mystery/thriller club.

I am a practicing attorney (mainly a litigator) in Texas. Married with five children, all of whom I am very proud of, and I recently became a grandfather. I am constantly sleep deprived from reading late, watching movies (I love the Hammer films), or when the Stars (hockey) or Rangers (baseball) play on the West Coast (hate those 9:00pm CST starting times).

While I read mostly horror, I was introduced to Dame Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle at an early age. I remember staying up to watch Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce tear it up as Holmes and Watson and to this day I have trouble accepting any other actors in those roles. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for British mysteries and recently have started delving into this genre more deeply so I am looking forward to learning a lot and getting great suggestions from this group.

As far as writers in this genre I enjoy Lee Child, John Connolly, Dennis Lehane, Joe Lansdale, and James Lee Burke. I also mix in the classics and try to read at least a few Dame Agatha Christie novels per year in an effort to read the whole set and I am always re-reading the Sherlock Holmes stories and novels.

Looking forward to meeting you all and reading some great books---by the way, Gone Girl is a fantastic choice, brilliant book.

Garbageman | 46 comments Hi Chris, I'm glad that you joined. I have stood in front of the row of Dennis Lehane books at my library and wonder if I should take the plunge. It is always good to get new perspectives about authors.

Welcome

Chris (chrismccaffrey) Thanks for the welcome. Glad to be here and meet new people.

Lehand is fantastic although I have read only one novel by him so far. I have read Live by Night---which is a historical crime novel set in Boston and Florida in the 20's and deals with Irish mobsters. Mystic River was highly recommended to me by friends and I have that one on my TBR to be read very soon.
