Thank you Linda. It is so difficult to watch him going through this. He is still at home with me, so reading is my escape.

Hi All! I'm Jackie from Adelaide Australia, just joined a couple of days ago, I read mysteries, crime, suspense, thrillers, horror not romance though. Some favourites include Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, Steve Hamilton, John Sandford and lots more, and I love trying out new authors.
My name's. Peter, and I'm addicted. To mysteries, primarily hard-boiled PI (Robert Crais, Robert Parker, more) and police procedurals (Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly, more). I also find great pleasure in what might be called "caper" mysteries, such as Fletch, anything--ANYTHING--by Thomas Perry (if you haven't read Metzger's Dog, you have a major treat ahead). For 9 years my day job has been teaching middle and high school English, which is now where I get to read traditional literature. For 25 years before that, I practiced criminal trial law (yep, just like Mickey Haller), trying over 250 murders and a passel of drug and gun cases, including a delicious Locked Room mystery.
I ride a prodigious Honda motorcycle, watch good movies and quite a lot of British crime drama, and take care of my little farmlet.
You have had an exciting life, Peter. I'm looking forward to your reviews and comments on the books we read. Thanks for joining us.
Peter, have you ever thought about becoming an author? Sounds like you would have some very exciting things to say.
Hi, name's Harry. I read mystery/thriller/detective, Noir, etc. series almost exclusively (some stand-alone stuff but not much). Thanks to Goodreads and my Kindle, I now keep track of what I read and write reviews for entire series (as opposed to individual books). Cool writers for me are: Lee Child, Harlan Coben, John Locke, Jo Nesbo (oh yes!), John Verdon, Brett Battles, James L Burke, Robert Crais, Michael Connelly, Jeffery Deaver, John Dunning, Barry Eisler, Dick Francis, Michael Gruber, Steven James, William Kent Krueger, Dennis Lehane, Zoe Sharp, Duane Swierczynski, Andrew Vachss(yes!). Adding to the list as I come across more excellent series writers.

Hi John. Ok, I'll give it a shot. In terms of Genre as a reader I'm looking for something out of the box. As readers we tend to apply formulas to what we read, we categorize things, but as an author it's probably not a good idea to approach it in this manner. Characterization: no flat characters, we have to care about the fate of both heroes, anti-heroes and villains, allys, etc. Exposition: no superfluous details (Jo Nesbo is an expert at bringing in details only relevant to the story, though they are exposition), plot (I prefer literary romanticism, but I'll make an exception for the nordic writers, particularly Nesbo). I look for the hero as loner, a man/woman of principle (Dick Francis for example), with an apparently sociopathic character as ally (we want his ally to be good, root for him, but may not always get that satisfaction - which keeps tension going). Harlan Coben's "Win" is a good example. And last but not least, the novel should be long enough, with plot complexity (driven by the hero's action (Literary Romanticism) vs. reaction) - meaning physical and cerebral satisfaction from the viewpoint of the reader - Verdon and Grueber come to mind in this respect. This, as compared to Nesbo (whom I like a lot) where the hero often is driven by the events instead of him driving the events (literary Naturalism). I'm sure there's more, but maybe that answers your question?
Oh, and as regards the villains. So often in this genre they are underwritten. Let's take Jeffery Deaver. His villains are as smart, intelligent and formidable as Lincoln Rhyme. I enjoy that kind of character development immensely.
You have given me so much to think about! I'm copying your response and pinning it on my noteboard. Thank you. Simply, thank you.j.
John, if you want details on all of this...my reviews for all these authors/series should give you that...but remember, I'm just a humble reader :-)
You are a reader who knows good writing and has excellent notions why it is good. Anybody can say "I like this" or "This is good." Very few can hone in on why. Believe me, I've taken courses from writing instructors who couldn't say in a year what you have outlined in a few paragraphs. Again, thank you.j.
Hola a todos!Soy española. No se si habrá algún español o de habla española en este grupo. Me gusta mucho la novela de misterio. Así que creo que estoy en el grupo adecuado :)
I joined a while back but never said hi....so Hi. I'm Jaime and I'm 36 almost 37, married mom of 2, avid reader, proofer, promoter (when asked), moving to Florida soon but for now stuck in the frozen north, where, once again it is snowing. Ugh. Currently reading Talented by Sophie Davis, which I won the series in a contest and I actually like it...Serious Lord of the Rings fan, if you argue with me on any point in the books, I will win. No matter what your point is, I will win. Haha...Nice to meet all of you.
I like all kinds of books, I'm not restricted to one genre. I just finished reading The Awakening and The Judas Kiss by Angella Graff, and those are theological, crime meets holy people book, and I'm NOT religious in any way, yet I fell in love with these books, so I AM versatile.
Thanks for reading my awesomely boring biography...Take care :)

Hay un grupo llamado Radio Patio solo en español que está muy bien. No se si lo conocerás.

Thanks everyone for welcoming us. I introduced myself way way back on page 10 of this thread, but here it goes again:
I'm a 47 year old lawyer living in Mexico City.
I got hooked on reading after I read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton at the age of 13 in a boarding school runned by nuns in Philadelphia. I pretty much like to read anything I can get my hands on, specially SF, mysteries and fantasy novels.
I'd love to read your recommendations.

Have you read any Edmund Crispin, Anne Katherine Green, S.S. Van Dyke or Sax Rohmer?

Hi everyone. My name is Ethan and I created and maintain by blog, A Book A Week, which chronicles my quest to read and review a new book each week. In addition, I hold occasional giveaways of books I think readers will enjoy. I've been infatuated with mystery novels for as long as I could read. Though my detective of choice have ranged from Encyclopedia Brown to Adam Dalgleish, my love of a good mystery has remained a constant.
Of course, I read and review a variety of genres for the blog, but I'm always ready to discuss a good thriller novel whenever I get the chance. I look forward to participating in discussions with you and to sharing our mutual love of reading.

Hello Mystery Book Lovers,My name is Jamie Sheffield, and I'm still pretty new to Goodreads, and just finding my way into the groups.
I have loved reading mysteries since I got my hands on an Encyclopedia Brown book when I was 8. I enjoy reading all sorts of mysteries, especially authors like Lawrence Block and John Sandford, and generally have 2-4 books going at any given moment.
I'm a Special Education Teacher in Lake Placid, NY. I live in a small house in the middle of a big forest with my wife and son and rescue dogs (Miles and Puck).
I love reading and camping and canoeing and cooking.
I wrote and published my first novel (a mystery) in the last year, and if you're interested, you can find out more about it on my GoodReads page (there's a FREE excerpt to download).
Thanks,
Jamie Sheffield
