Snow is good, it will definitely help the crops this year. Being snowed in under several feet of snow is another story. I'm glad I am not in the midwest right now.
Hi,My name is Dave, a 56 year old Brit living in Hamburg, Germany. I am married with two teenage daughters. Like many of you I am a Michael Connelly fan. Ian Rankin also comes to mind. Not really for this group is my love of DH Lawrence and William McIlvanney. I'm not sure whether the book I am currently reading fits this group: "To kill a mocking bird".
I try to read a broad spectrum of books. Although I am not a werewolf, vampire fan. If the author is German then I will read it in German.
I joined Goodreads last year but found the navigation daunting and time-consuming.
I also write. My books can be seen at www.davidmsamson.com. Unashamedly I admit that my intention was primarily promotion. This is no longer the case. I am referring to the word primarily.
I would like to hear from others. Especially reading recommendations. Growing older means becoming less tolerant. I used to rarely give up on a book (Ulysses was the first to defeat me). Now I find myself doing so more frequently.
I am hoping to keep up with you all via my goodreads app. I seem to have gone on a bit. So I'll stop now.
Hello, just joined, greeting you all from gloomy, grey Manchester, UK. Although I mostly read other types of books these days, I still enjoy a good crime/thriller. My favourite authors include Val McDermid and Lee Child. Quite like Kathy Reichs, liked early Patricia Cornwall and James Patterson's Alex Cross books for fast, easy holiday reading. Currently enjoying Simon Kernick's The Crime Trade

Hi Lorraine, its nice to meet you, welcome to the group.
@AshtonThey recently changed it to 13%. 8% for one type of tax, and 5% for another. GST and HST. What do you mean by ONLY? Where are you, and how much tax do you have to pay???
Also, thanks for the welcome.
@Linda
Thanks to you, too, for the welcome. I think I will like it here.
Thank you for the invitation, Jenni. My name is Renee, I live in the Pacific Northwest USA and I do love a good mystery/thriller/crime/suspense read! Looking forward to learning about all of you and what you're reading.
@Ashton Where do you live? City/Country?That is a lot of tax. Please tell me so I know NOT to ever go there (ha ha)!
Ashton wrote: "England. Where else? We have to pay unemployment benefits for the Royal Family and support a massive NHS (National Health Service) that is a black hole; that's why."Hi Ashton, I'm sorry for you, but it makes me thankful that IS live in Canada.
Hi Renee, nice to meet, welcome to the group.
Vancouver's about right for you then. And it's beautiful. It does rain (and rain and rain). But it is so green and it seldom snows. (I live on the US side of the border... a smidge south of Vancouver. So I'm only a little bit biased.)
Ashton wrote: "Some day I will emigrate to Canada. I've been to Vancouver. Where is the warmest spot in Canada?"Veancouver is the warmest, even though I've only been thre once, the nice thing about Vancouver is that itsonly a three flight to Hawaii.
ha, I was going to say warmest part in Canada is in Florida!!!I will go to England only on Google Earth.... way cheaper!
My name is Marcy, I live in the Midwest where the weather is playing havoc - will it rain snow or shine? I just layer it up! My first mystery was what alot of girls my age read - Nancy Drew, then i discovered Victoria Holt - little romance and gothic mystery. I love series writers like Sue Grafton and Patricia Cornwell. I read dark thriller authors like Michael Connelly to the light hearted Joanne Fluke. Never read her books on an empty stomach! I look forward to participating in the discussions here.

Hi all, new to the group. I'm Jen from New Jersey. I love reading crime thrillers...especially the kind the put a little scare into you...there is no better feeling than wanting to hide under the blankets while reading a book that freaks you out a little bit!
Hi, I am Sadia from Toronto, Ontario. I am 24 years old and I work as a Registered Pharmacy technician...My job is very demanding so reading relaxes me. I get a chance to relax with my cup of tea and my kobo reader in the evening for half an hour or so...I love mystery and crime stories. Just joined Goodreads....I love reading and I love books!!
Welcome newcomers from another newbie! :) Jenni, I agree... Angelina Jolie would not make a good Scarpetta. I wonder who will play Joe.
Hello Jennifer and Jac welcome to the group I hope you enjoy the warm friendly company of all the like minded readers here
Hi, I'm Jean. I live in southern California. I love to read mysteries and thrillers. Can't wait to get new book suggestions from this group. I'm currently loving Chris Carter's series.
Hi! I recently was invited to join this FUN group. I started participating without introducing myself. Oops! My name is Sarah. I live in a small town in Iowa in my grandparents home that I'm currently updating, but I am still leaving parts of the house as they've always been. I taught children to read for many years, however, wasn't a reader myself or so I thought I wasn't! After having some health problems and forced free time I can no longer say that. I LOVE saying that I am an avid reader and that I've actually completed a book, actually lots of them. I wander around the genres, but I can't stay away from mystery/crime/suspense/thrillers for very long at all. Once I start one, I have a very hard time putting it down until I'm done or fall asleep. So far, I'm REALLY enjoying being a part of this group. I love learning about new authors, books, and anything reading-related. It is a dream of mine to write a mystery/crime/suspense book. We will see if that dream ever becomes reality. You will be the first to know! I've become an official junkie I suppose! It's a pleasure to be part of this group. Thanks again for the invite! -sarah
One more thing...I really really dislike the idea of Angelina Jolie playing Kay Scarpetta. What a bummer!
Hello, I recently joined the group. My name is Greg, I live in St. Paul,MN with my wife and dog. I've been on Goodreads for close to three years now, originally joining in order to better keep track of my books and reading. One thing I'm really enjoying is re-reading my books to put in the actual read dates, especially as I do enjoy experiencing great books again. I read a lot of mysteries and thrillers, but also many other genres. I am looking forward to participating in the group, thanks for inviting me.
Welcome Sarah and Greg. I really enjoy this group and think you will too. I also read most genres but always love a good mystery or thriller when I need to relax. Go figure
Just thought I wold pop in and say "Hello and welcome" to all the new members who joined this weekend.
Hi, I'm Richard. I live in Davenport Ia and have what most of you would say is the dream job. For the last 17 years I've worked in a bookstore. Oh I've got stories. I've been a mystery fan from an early age. I started with all the Encyclopedia Brown (which I still have) to the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew (which I still have) I now read mostly tea cozy. Don't like the graphic writing of some authors. Some of my favourite writers are M.C. Beaton,Laura Childs,Denise Swanson and Margaret Frazier who I was sad to hear recently passed away. I've been on Goodreads for years trying to get my library under control.
Hi and welcome Richard. Please share your stories of working in a bookstore. I read Beaton, Childs, and Swanson too.I hope you had a great day.
Leigh Anne
Hey huys!First, I want to say thanks to Momzi for inviting me to join this group - it's right up my alley.
About me: I love mysteries and crime stories and for me it basically started with Detective Conan (the anime). And then came Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and all kind of crime stories. To be honest, I don't even remember them all.
The mystery and crime element is what intrigues me most, so even Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series is on my most loved list.
Ah, and so is Detective Conan. Particularly, he never left the list ;)
Welcome Sarah Greg Richard and A I think you will enjoy this lively interesting group I would like to join Leigh in asking Richard to share some of the stories of his time working in a Bookstore
Hi, I'm a newbie! Jumping right in and commenting on discussions. I'm a bibliophile, copyeditor and book blogger. Nice to "meet" everyone.
thanks everyone for the warm greetings. One thing that always makes me chuckle is the messed up title we are given. "the eyelid" by some guy named Homer something. "tequila mockingbird" "Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Ask A Band" Or they combine titles of authors. Erik Larson's The Devil in the Thunderstucks Beast's Storm.

Hello to my fellow Iowan, Richard! I'm still giggling over your stories. I was fortunate to work at Iowa Bk & Supply while going to college at the U of I. The only problem I had working there was I spent more money than what I earned while working. :) Do you have that problem??? I will be in the Quad Cities over the weekend! I may have to go book shopping. Glad you're part of the group. I would imagine you being a wealth of knowledge and fun stories!!

My dad was always an avid reader and he read to my sister and I every night before we went to sleep. My first memory is Heidi. From there I went to Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, Louisa May Alcott and Nancy Drew. My main requirement for reading a book was, and still is, that it's a big book. I prefer mystery and suspense. Some of my favorite authors are Louise Penny, Donna Leon, Anne Perry, John Lescroart and Michael Connelly.
