Aloha Susan, in your GR profile page, you should find a place to start adding your writing. It's hard to find if you don't have any writing, but the prompt should be around there somewhere. If you can't find it, try your GR home page.

Susan Swartzberg | 8 comments If I find my GR home page, will i be able to upload my short story, or do i have to start writing it all over again? Thanks very much.

message 53: by Aloha (new) - added it

Aloha You can copy and paste into it, just like this comment box. You're welcome!

Susan Swartzberg | 8 comments Can I copy and paste 15 pages into the comment box?

Mari Mann (marimann) Aloha wrote: "Oh, yes, Albertine. Could that be the female version of Proust's driver and love interest, Albert?"

Wasn't Proust's driver's name Alfred? Alfred Agostinelli? Or was there an Albert I'm missing?

you're right. It's Alfred. I mixed up the names since Albertine reminded me of Albert, which is similar to Alfred.

Was his driver English, then? Alfred isn't a very Gallic name.

Nick Wellings | 322 comments Alfred was from Monaco :)

Hello folks. My story, 'Mr Morden's Tree', has a tangential relationship to my love of Proust. It's not particularly Proustian in style but I don't think I would have attempted a story that consists of a single thousand-word sentence if I hadn't read the Recherche :)

Excerpt here:
http://joshuamostafa.info/work/fictio...

It's published in Brixton-based Oblong magazine (only three quid!) :

Ce Ce (cecebe) | 626 comments Thank you for posting, Joshua. I look forward to reading the excerpt...not sure if the whole story will be available in the US.

Yesterday morning as I was reading a few pages of Proust I wondered if Proust would have found a willing publisher in today's world. It's heartening to know your story with a thousand-word sentence was published.

Again, I look forward to reading your excerpt this evening.

Marcelita Swann | 1135 comments Maybe he would have taken this approach:

Sarah McNally is in one of my Proust reading groups.
Here is a NYTimes article about her and the independent bookstore.

Nick Wellings | 322 comments That's amazing, Marcelita!! I might have to visit and get them to print me one!

Thanks Marcelita. I love Sarah's quote: “I believe that within every great reader there are multitudes of people,” she said. “And you have to open yourself to all of them. I love British chick lit and I love Proust. Don’t judge yourself! There are so many kinds of writing that are great but bear no relation to each other. ‘A Book of Memories’ by Peter Nadas is like climbing a mountain. ‘Cutting for Stone’ is like going down a waterslide.”

I agree with Nick. I have to visit the Espresso machine next time I'm in New York...imagine a warm newly printed book in hand...AND I am dying to see the Book Mobiles!

Will it be your book? Self-publishing on music?

message 65: by Nick (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nick Wellings | 322 comments I wouldn't do one on music i think. I might just write one in a week and get it published there :p Or see what their "cloud" has!

I think it's a great place to just "be," as they have a cafe.

Plus, it is close to my favorite place to get lox and bagels, Russ & Daughters.

And Katz's Deli is just down the street from Russ & Daughters!

Katz's Pastrami is my favorite sandwich, which I split with a friend.

Now...I am ravenous.
See you soon...

Hi Joshua, I finally had a moment to read...however I clicked on the above link and it seemed not to work.

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Cheryl. Sorry for my delay in response, and thanks for following the link!

The server does seem to be running very slowly. Not sure what's happening there. My homepage (on which the excerpt is also visible) seems to work better:

Martin Gibbs | 105 comments Not really writing, but a blog post about Proust. I wrote it after beginning this week's reading... I'm putting it here because my blog has links to other stuff I write, which is definitely not Proust-related.

Very nice Martin. Book sniffing? Interesting concept. I think Proust would approve.

I liked it and posted my comment but I am not sure if it was published in that blog post, because I did not know what profile to choose. Anyway, great post.

Aloha I don't know how much difference I would have made. I'm not a Tweeter, so I don't have that many followers. P. is the one who's a serious Tweeter.
