Having the kids log their books is a great idea. My granddaughter is only 2 1/2 but has quite a long list of books we read to her already. I think I'll start a journal. I imagine she'll be very interested in what some of her first books were.

When I worked in a library a long time ago, my elderly librarian had kept track of every book she'd read since her childhood. It was amazing to see how many she'd read. I think this is a great idea!

Why not set them up in goodreads to log books. It would make it so organized. If the kids are too young they could log the books and you could manage a goodreads account for them. They could take over the goodreads account at whatever time you feel they are responsible enough.

This year I think I'm going to go with just trying read some of the huge stack of non-fiction on my bookshelf. I'm rubbish about reading non-fiction and the stack's only getting larger and more intimidating with every christmas/birthday.

I also want to read the books I have bought but have not read on my shelf.
My last resolution is to read more classic literature, which I have done well at so far. The first three were The Hobbit , Grapes of Wrath , and Wuthering Heights .

How did you l..."
I actually enjoyed all three more than I anticipated. The Hobbit was so much more fun compared to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Since it was the story being told by Bilbo Baggins, it didn't get overly detailed. Bilbo is such a fun character too.
The Grapes of Wrath was depressing for me but I really like Stienbeck. I am glad I read him later in life where I can appreciate his themes. I think I would have hated him in high school.
Then there is Wuthering Heights. I liked it and couldn't even put it down. However I do not understand why Heathcliff and Catherine are lauded as such a romantic literary couple. I appreciate what Emily accomplished with that book.
I will read more classics for sure! I will be rereading Jane Eyre next and hope to read Life of Pi with the group.

I think you hit the nail on the head for me Jenn. If i watched less TV-I would def have more time to read.
I'm a new mom, and seriously have no idea how I can find more time to read with a baby hanging off my body 24/7. lol!!
My new read times are while I pump milk and when I'm on my lunch break, which surprisingly, allows me a nice chunk of time.

I completely understand. With a new baby it's definitely hard to find the time to read, and my tv intake has increased. My baby is 7 months, and it has gotten easier to find time to read. Good luck.

I wasn't so much disappointed by Wuthering Heights, but I may be the only person but I don't like Wuthering Heights. I read it my senior year in high school so maybe I should try again, but I remember it being pure torture to read it.

Not as far as I wanted to be. Goodreads is telling me I'm 2 books behind my goal, but I'm planning on finishing The Five Orange Pips today so that should make it 1.

Oh no, Anil. I'm sorry to hear that. =( Hope you're doing better.

But I'm coming into my busy season what with festival season, Canada Day and family vacations coming up so it will level out.

Thanks, Karena. I am doing OK. I am just trying to accept my mum's sudden passing away. I'm still in denial, but it has been only one month and a half. I don't think I'll ever get used to it, but I'll learn to live without her eventually.

I'm sorry, Anil. Be well and try to concentrate on taking care of yourself and your family.

Good job, Tanya.
Enjoy your vacation with the family.

Thank you, Laura. I am doing my best.

I just saw this, almost 2 months later.
Funny, I am trying to talk my kids into starting goodreads accounts for themselves! They are teens, so definitely old enough. I told them they can import their lists into a spreadsheet - no writing or typing required! :-) So far they are not buying it. I think it would be great for them, to help them find new books, have a venue for reviews, etc. (Both have started blogs off and on, but that can get tedious, especially if there is no feedback.)
One of these days...

- organise my books (recently moved house and lots of boxes with books hanging around is depressing)
- join a good book club (and I found it in Cwatc)
- visit regularly my local library (which I do every three weeks)
- read at least 1 book per week ( that would make 52 books for 2013)
- include more classics in English
So far I am doing ok in most accounts and plan to start following the club recommendations starting with Anna Karenina. I might even catch up with the previous 4.

I'm doing great! I'm 65% done! According to Goodreads I'm 27% ahead of schedule! :) :) :) Woot woot!

But I have stuck with my other goal of branching out a bit of my comfort zone and as a reward have read a lot of wonderful books that I wouldn't have tried before.

I have been reading a lot more classics, which was my other goal. This has made me branch out in the genres I read too. All around its looking to be a good reading year. Success!

Congratulations to all for your progresses.

Thanks Colleen!

Yay Erika!

I'm with you Shelia. If I don't read at least a chapter a day, it feels like a waste of a day. I don't live on my own anymore & things get noisy but I average a book about every 1-2 weeks.
