When I was single, and to a lesser extent when I was married but before kids, I could easily read 100 books a year or more. How I wish I'd kept track of my books back then! I'd love to see what I was reading. Now I require (as part of their schooling) my kids to log their books.

I imagine she'll be very interested in what some of her first books were.

It was amazing to see how many she'd read. I think this is a great idea!

If the kids are too young they could log the books and you could manage a goodreads account for them. They could take over the goodreads account at whatever time you feel they are responsible enough.
My reading resolution last year was not to buy any more books until I finished the ones I already owned. I ended up buying 50+ new books. This year I think I'm going to go with just trying read some of the huge stack of non-fiction on my bookshelf. I'm rubbish about reading non-fiction and the stack's only getting larger and more intimidating with every christmas/birthday.
I set a goal for myself this year of 30. Pretty tame resolution for someone who does not read very quickly.I also want to read the books I have bought but have not read on my shelf.
My last resolution is to read more classic literature, which I have done well at so far. The first three were The Hobbit , Grapes of Wrath , and Wuthering Heights .

I actually enjoyed all three more than I anticipated. The Hobbit was so much more fun compared to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Since it was the story being told by Bilbo Baggins, it didn't get overly detailed. Bilbo is such a fun character too.
The Grapes of Wrath was depressing for me but I really like Stienbeck. I am glad I read him later in life where I can appreciate his themes. I think I would have hated him in high school.
Then there is Wuthering Heights. I liked it and couldn't even put it down. However I do not understand why Heathcliff and Catherine are lauded as such a romantic literary couple. I appreciate what Emily accomplished with that book.
I will read more classics for sure! I will be rereading Jane Eyre next and hope to read Life of Pi with the group.

I'm a new mom, and seriously have no idea how I can find more time to read with a baby hanging off my body 24/7. lol!!
My new read times are while I pump milk and when I'm on my lunch break, which surprisingly, allows me a nice chunk of time.

My baby is 7 months, and it has gotten easier to find time to read. Good luck.
Finish all of the 20 or so books on my bookcase which I haven't yet, and read 50+ books overall, hopefully mostly 20th Century classics

I read it my senior year in high school so maybe I should try again, but I remember it being pure torture to read it.
LaLaLa Laura wrote: "So how is everyone's progress ?"Not as far as I wanted to be. Goodreads is telling me I'm 2 books behind my goal, but I'm planning on finishing The Five Orange Pips today so that should make it 1.
I am way behind because of an unfortunate event in my life. I am trying to catch the number up now. Hopefully I will have caught it up by the end of April or early May.

I'm 13 titles ahead of schedule. But I'm coming into my busy season what with festival season, Canada Day and family vacations coming up so it will level out.
Karena wrote: "Oh no, Anil. I'm sorry to hear that. =( Hope you're doing better."Thanks, Karena. I am doing OK. I am just trying to accept my mum's sudden passing away. I'm still in denial, but it has been only one month and a half. I don't think I'll ever get used to it, but I'll learn to live without her eventually.

I'm sorry, Anil. Be well and try to concentrate on taking care of yourself and your family.

Good job, Tanya.
Enjoy your vacation with the family.

Funny, I am trying to talk my kids into starting goodreads accounts for themselves! They are teens, so definitely old enough. I told them they can import their lists into a spreadsheet - no writing or typing required! :-) So far they are not buying it. I think it would be great for them, to help them find new books, have a venue for reviews, etc. (Both have started blogs off and on, but that can get tedious, especially if there is no feedback.)
One of these days...
I changed the number from 100 books to 50 books, because I realised I wouldn't be able to read 100 books this year. I've read 21 books so far including 2 plays, which makes me feel as if I were cheating. My aim is to add one monster read to the list well before the end of the year and increase the number up to 60.
My reading resolution was to:- organise my books (recently moved house and lots of boxes with books hanging around is depressing)
- join a good book club (and I found it in Cwatc)
- visit regularly my local library (which I do every three weeks)
- read at least 1 book per week ( that would make 52 books for 2013)
- include more classics in English
So far I am doing ok in most accounts and plan to start following the club recommendations starting with Anna Karenina. I might even catch up with the previous 4.
My goal is set at 50 because I'm working this year so I don't have as much time. But I've been reading more since my husband and I separated, so they've taken up all my spare time, in a good way. I will probably still get through 100 this year, with a goal of at least 1/4 of them being classics, if not more. It's really time I read a bunch of those classics.
how are your resolutions going? you know, it's mid year so maybe you can start fresh with mid year resolutions. what are yours?
LaLaLa Laura wrote: "how are your resolutions going? you know, it's mid year so maybe you can start fresh with mid year resolutions. what are yours?"I'm doing great! I'm 65% done! According to Goodreads I'm 27% ahead of schedule! :) :) :) Woot woot!
I don't set a goal for a certain number of books. I feel pressured about that and I read for pleasure. My goal this year was to read a variety of styles and to read these authors: Raymond Chandler, Doris Lessing, Emile Zola, Potok (The Chosen), all of Maugham that I haven't read and Great House by Nicole Krauss because I loved The Story of Love. I mostly prefer classics or literary new novels but do read an occasional 'just fun' book like Evanovich.
I am 68/175 which Goodreads tells me is "on track." Anna Karenina set me back a bit.But I have stuck with my other goal of branching out a bit of my comfort zone and as a reward have read a lot of wonderful books that I wouldn't have tried before.
I have done pretty good. I am 18/30 right now I am predicting to exceed my original. Always better to shoot low so you can get excited when you go beyond. I have been reading a lot more classics, which was my other goal. This has made me branch out in the genres I read too. All around its looking to be a good reading year. Success!
I'm currently on track: 19/50 -- 38% there. Hooray! Although I feel like I have to finish very soon. I'm pretty sure my recreational reading will come to a grinding halt when law school starts in the fall.
I specified a goal of 40 books for this year, physical and digital. But every time I find a book, here or in another place, I add it to my bookshelf and the number of books grow but the time no. Infact I have time for read only in the evening and is not enough.
I have read 36 out of 50 books I have set as a goal and about to make it 37. I think I'll have reached the goal before November.
I met my goal of 175! I want to raise it to 200 next year and break it down a bit by genre and prize winners and such. Hope everyone else's resolutions have been going well!
I have finished 53 books out of 50, so I'm doing a bit better than I wanted. I'll try to read more books next year. I need to solve my attention problem first, though.
50 was my goal and I'm not quite going to make it. I would like to read more than this. Was hoping the ipad would help. Going to have to start kicking it in gear if I ever want to make a dent in all the books, congratulations Karena on 175! That's huge!
I'm at 96, just four short of my goal! I'm determined to make it, although I think it will be last minute :)
I am almost arrived to my goal at 60, but I wouldn't stop here. We'll see how many books I can read before the end of the year.Congratulations to all for your progresses.

My 2012 challenge was 100, but this year my goal is 60. I have read 58, and I have three more books I want to read this month.
My 2013 goal was 50 books an I am happy to say that as of today I've completed 50! Hoping to exceed my goal and squeeze in a few more this month, despite all the holiday madness.
Erika wrote: "My 2013 goal was 50 books an I am happy to say that as of today I've completed 50! Hoping to exceed my goal and squeeze in a few more this month, despite all the holiday madness."Yay Erika!
I don't count how many books I read each year. My goal is just to read something, if just only a few pages of something, every day of the year.
I did not even come close. I was shooting for 50 in 2013 and read about 20 so far. 20 is a big deal for me so I am proud of that. I'm going to try for 50 again in 2014.
Shelia wrote: "I don't count how many books I read each year. My goal is just to read something, if just only a few pages of something, every day of the year."I'm with you Shelia. If I don't read at least a chapter a day, it feels like a waste of a day. I don't live on my own anymore & things get noisy but I average a book about every 1-2 weeks.
