Ashley (lawlizz) | 8 comments Well, I have 35 left on my Kindle in the "you bought it, now read it" collection (seems I'm not alone in that tendency), and another 41 freebies I've picked up since then.

Add another 24 for this group's reads and my once a month Prime book and that would put me at an even 100, 99 if I subtract the Summa Theologica, which I definitely do. It'll be sitting on my Kindle for a long, long time. Not sure what possessed me to get that one.

I don't count books that are less than 100 pages though, so that knocks out several of the freebies. On the other hand, I'm hoping to start law school in the fall, so that's going to destroy any time I have for pleasure reading. It'll still add to my total though, hehe.

But! I did meet my 100 book goal this year, and that wasn't accounting for rereads, so I'll shoot for another 100 and see what happens. =)

Shannon Teper (shanteper) One year I read a classic every month, so I will try to do that in 2013, beginning with The Age of Innocence, which I fortunately had on my bookshelf already, meaning to read it sometime. Looks like that time has come! Last year, I began reading a mystery book from every country around the world, written by an author from that country, and will continue this year. So I'm going for one classic and one international mystery per month while working at the pesky full-time job that interferes with my reading pursuits. It may be too ambitious a goal, but I'm going to try.

message 53: by Sandye (new)

Sandye Corcoran My goal for 2013 is to read every week, something I haven't ever been able to do before. Also, I'd like to try genres & authors I've never read before. Also in 2013, I'd like to try writing some short stories. I've been told I'd be a good writer, never believed it myself though. Think it's time I give it a whirl and see what happens. Even if my stories stink, at least I tried something new!

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

I plan to read more non-fiction this 2013, particularly about the Middle Ages and World War II. Since I've been planning all along to read more historical fictions, I just can't afford to confuse facts with fics. *still remembered that "Da Vinci Debacle" where I stupidly mixed facts and absolute fiction.

Mary Vermette | 4 comments Wow, people read a lot. 50, 75,100 books! I read almost every night when I go to bed. My goal is to read 20 books.

message 56: by Mary (new)

Mary Vermette | 4 comments Travis of NNY wrote: "I think rather than make a goal for my own reading I will set a goal to do a better job of making time to readto my kids."

Something we did as our son got a little older was to invite him to read his own book in our bed as we read. He loved in all the way through jr. high. Even when getting him to read was a challenge, he would always get a book and join us. Must have done something right because now as an adult he loves to read (even classics).

message 57: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) To read more books I recently discovered the audible app for smartphones. It's not cheap but now I can download books to my phone pop in Bluetooth and have someone read the books to me. The app is free and books can be downloaded to device s that best suit you but the phone is best for me

Ashley (lawlizz) | 8 comments Adam wrote: "The question is, do I count books started in 2012 and finished in 2013? "

I would count them for 2013, but somewhere in your 'currently reading' section, you can mark page progress, if you want to count part of it in one year and part in another.

Mary wrote: "Wow, people read a lot. 50, 75,100 books!"

For me, it's just evidence of way too much free time. =) As soon as I find a job, that 100 book goal is going to get reassessed. o.O

Darlene (darlene56) | 16 comments Jeane wrote: "What are your reading resolutions this upcoming year?

i want to read 72 books for my 6 book groups and also another 10 to 20 books of my own choosing. i love these groups they are bringing to mind many books i have already read and a lot that i have wanted to read in the past but had forgotten.

message 64: by Darlene (new)

Darlene (darlene56) | 16 comments i am still fairly new to good reads but i still have to ask do you all know about thrift books these are the best prices i have ever saw (outside the library book sells every few months where nothing is over a dollar) also free shipping on all.

i just joined a book club based on compulsive book buying and i don't understand people who are able to get rid of books by giving them away i used to be able to trade books at a store in florid but as the addiction has got worse i find i am unable to do this anymore so i just add to my collection soon i will be sleeping with them.

message 66: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (keekscarlson) My resolution is just to read more! I did not read as much in 2012. Unless reading Dora over and over again counts! lol

Deanna (dlbell208) | 3 comments Darlene wrote: " do you all know about thrift books these are the best prices i have ever saw ..."

Thanks for the tip about Thrift Books, Darlene! Just checked out the website and purchased a couple of books by and about Dorothy Parker (my latest obsession) for an amazing price (4 books for less than $16!). Now that I've joined a couple of book clubs, will definitely be visiting them again! :-)

Bian is always tired I would like to read 150 books and actually read the group reads as well.r

Michelle (mgauffant) I'm a new mom so figuring out how to manage my reading around my daughter's schedule is my challenge.

message 72: by Kaylyn (new)

Kaylyn (kaylynreads) I am going to read 100 books this year and visit the library much much more often. (:

message 73: by Kim Barberi (new)

Kim Barberi (kysaibar) My goal is to read at least 36 books this year: one classic, one contemporary fiction and one non-fiction book per month. I didn't make the challenge the last two years but this year I am optimistic. 2013 let's go!

message 74: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 3 comments My goal is to finish the Literary Exploration Group's Insane Challenge which is 36 different genres this year, some of which I never read, which should be fun and interesting.
I'm excited because my 12 year old is going to do the Hard Challenge which is 24 different genres.
I love this website.

Rose (harnessrose) | 60 comments Michelle wrote: "I'm a new mom so figuring out how to manage my reading around my daughter's schedule is my challenge."

I completely understand. My baby is 6 months old and I don't get to read quite as much as I did before.

message 76: by Rose (new)

Rose (harnessrose) | 60 comments My goal is to just read. I have to find time to read while taking care of my 6 month old baby, so I won't set a certain number of books to read in 2013. But I think I'm going to try the Alphabet Challenge, where you read one book for each letter of the alphabet by title and author...52 books in total. We'll see if that actually happens though.

message 77: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) To number crunch I have 3 book groups. 36 monthly reads. My alphabet challenge by author 26. Thats 62 books. I set a goal of 72 books broke down into 4 regular books a month and 2 audiobooks a month. The audiobooks will be any longer than 600 pages which go on my phone and I can listen while I work. I think I migjt just be able to reach my goal this way

message 78: by Jacque (new)

Jacque Hodges (Carter) I originally set my goal at 75, with some of the other goals I've set for myself, I'll be fortunate to meet my revised goal of 50 again this year.

message 79: by Jeane, Book-tator (new)

Jeane (pinkbookdragon) | 323 comments So I am very sad that I didn't reach any of my goals last year, but this year is a fresh start and I will continue. The good news is, all the books that I wanted to finish before the new year are ready to be finished for this year so it will give me a good head start.

message 80: by Katie (new)

Katie (ink3dmama) | 4 comments My goal last year was 30, and I read 34. My goal this year is 42. I have 4 kids and very little personal time, so I try to keep it realistic.

message 81: by Kate (new)

Kate (chrgrgrl) According to goodreads I read 26 books between the end of August and the end of Dec this year. So my goal for 2013 is to read 50 books.

message 82: by Riah (new)

message 86: by Jeane, Book-tator (new)

Jeane (pinkbookdragon) | 323 comments So mine are to read 100 books, and to always finish the bookclub picks, also to try and read all the books on my bookshelf (my actual, physical bookshelf at home), because I have accumulated so many! Plus I feel bad getting ebooks when I have physical books on my bookshelf. Also I want to read at least 10 Newbery Award winners, and at least 10 of the 1001 books.

While I do read to my kids, I don't count their books in my goal of 200. I read really quickly though and don't watch a whole lot of television. =) I also count audiobooks which I listen to while I clean or do book club housekeeping or while writing our podcast scripts.

What is your secret to listening to a book while writing out a script? That is multi-tasking at its finest! :-)

To be honest, the script isn't very detailed. Jeane and I do a lot of improv. It is very basic. Mostly just bullet points of things we want to cover.

message 91: by Kati (last edited Jan 03, 2013 07:28PM) (new)

Kati I read while I cook, in the tub, before bed, any waiting room, between classes, running on the treadmill, between commercials etc. I do watch tv but I don't watch it everyday. More like save up a couple shows to watch on Saturday but spend the weekday evenings reading. I read really fast. I can finish a 600-700 page book on a Saturday, so a 200-300 page book is easily read after work in a couple of hours.

I can't do audiobooks. I tune out and they read to slow for me. I could be further along in the book, so it seems silly to listen for me.

That's interesting Kati, you are the not first person I have heard say that they tune out when audio books are on which is funny cause I tune out and start daydreaming unless audiobooks are on. I listen to audiobooks, when I clean, cook, walk my dogs, exercise, drive, in the bathtub, pretty much anytime I can't acutally hold a physical book (bath tubs, I like to close my eyes and just tune out the rest of the world). Also I had a friend who also reads faster then anything is "told" to him so he prefers reading things himself. So you're not alone :) good for you for being a fast reader, I guess because I started really reading so late that I was never able to pick up the speed reading thing.

I think you should count books you read to your kids if it's a book you would have read anyway...like Wind in the Willows or even the Winnie the Pooh collection.

message 94: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 6 comments It's sometimes hard for me to find time to read (school, baby, full time job) so I didn't set my goal really high (especially compared to everyone else). I set mine at 20, and I would like to finish the Bible too. I am not really a fast reader, and I feel that if I read too fast I won't absorb the story.

How do you read so fast?! I'm in awe. It takes me the better part of the day to read a book that's 350 pages.

message 96: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda I'm not interested in setting any goals beyond expanding my reading to include more classics. I have too many "have tos" in my life already. I want to keep my reading all about self indulgent pleasure. LOL!

I am looking forward to having a group of like-minded folks to discuss the books with. This is my first ever book club, and I'm excited. I'm really tickled to see how many members live outside the U.S. We are bound to get some very interesting perspectives. I'm so looking forward to this.

Kim (kimgravel) 50 books this year, with 1/4 of them being classics.

message 99: by Dorottya (new)

Dorottya (dorottya_b) | 23 comments I have lots:
-stop buying books, because I have loads I'm still to read
-read more (I set 55 for the year, but I might raise the number)
-read more classics or stuff with substance (I love my bestseller/shick lit stuff, but I have to care about classics, too!)
-read more dramas and plays
-read more in English (I'm Hungarian)
-upload the stuff that I've read and that are not in the system of Goodreads (due to the fact they're Hungarian and they are not really well-known)

For me, I've just always been a fast reader, and I don't have any children to read to, so definitely not counting kids books. =) I do count anything that is at least 100 pages though, so there are some shorter things in there, and my reading speed varies by genre. I can zip through a couple of shorter romances in a day, easy, while nonfiction tends to take a good bit longer.
