Katherine Locke (katherine_locke) | 1 comments Hi! I am a freelance editor (and author) with openings available. I edit a lot of YA and NA but additionally some spec fic and near-future thrillers. One of my authors is a RITA finalist this year.

I have packages available from queries to submission packages to brainstorming help to full manuscripts. I'm particularly good at looking at plot and pacing issues and characterization issues (motivations, flaws, continuity).

Let me know if I can help you!

Laura (lauraheffernan) | 1 comments Hi everyone,

I'm an author and freelance editor. My speciality is women's fiction, contemporary romance, and YA/MG contemporary. I offer reader reports, which is a full read pointing out big picture issues. Part of that is pointing out consistent grammatical issues, so writers can take the report and make the changes themselves rather than paying for a full line edit (which I also provide for people who could use a little more guidance).

I also do proof-reading and line edits, and query/synopsis critiques for anyone who is looking for an agent or submitting to small presses.

Cece (cecebooks) | 1 comments Hello Beautiful Author!

My name is CeCe. I am a freelance editor specializing in all romance genres and have experience working with both new indie authors as well as established bestsellers.

Why hire me?

I offer a no-nonsense comprehensive package that focuses on developmental, stylistic, and line editing. I understand that writing a book is a hard, but rewarding process. I also know that it can induce frequent bouts of nail biting, wine consuming stress. That's why I aim to develop supportive relationships with my authors. In addition to my editing services, I like to act as a writing coach/cheerleader for my clients and give them any encouragement and assistance they need throughout the process.

You can read details about my services and philosophy here: www.cececarroll.com or if you want to chat, shoot me an email at cececarroll@gmail.com

I work with individual authors as well as publishers, such as Woodbridge Press, Castrum Press, and JournalStone/Trepidatio.

I generally work fast, and can have a novel-length manuscript finished in two weeks or less. I prefer horror, paranormal, and speculative fiction, but I'm willing to take on any genre.

My current rates, and a partial list of books I've worked on, can be viewed at https://scarlettralgee.wordpress.com/... .

I can be contacted at scarlettralgee@gmail.com (please put "editing" in the subject somewhere).

Editing Services:

Hello there! My name is Ikram but you can call me Kimi. I’m a blogger and book reviewer graduating with a Master’s Degree in Applied Linguistics this summer. I am now offering editing services to aspiring and current authors. I specialize in young-adult literature. My goal as your editor is to help you bring your work to its highest potential!

If you would like to work with me, please view my services below. When you are ready, contact me at ikram.belaid93@gmail.com and tell me about your novel.

Please include:

Synopsis of your novel.
Exact word count of your manuscript.
Genre of your novel.
What service(s) you are interested in.
As a freelance editor, I extend the following levels of editing services:

Sample Edit – Free!

For uncertain writers, check this out.

If you’re unsure about whether my editing style will suit you, I can provide an edit of the first two pages of your manuscript. This is a free of charge service!

Express Evaluation

The Express Evaluation looks at those important first fifty pages for elements that might include pacing, characters and relationships, worldbuilding, and plot. For writers on a very tight budget and/or deadline, this is the service for you.

This service combines two elements:

An editorial letter that explains the overall issues and concerns of the manuscript excerpt.
In-line comments using Microsoft Word’s comment and Track Changes features to show specific problem areas, like overlong paragraphs and repetitive word choice. This is in addition to showing issues noted in the editorial letter.

Content/developmental editing:
Content editing, or structural/substantive editing, aims to bring out the tone of the manuscript as a whole, focusing more on the following:

Plot
Theme
Character development
Pace
Point of view
Dialogue
Readability
Content/tension
Descriptions
Proofreading:

Proofreading will make your piece look clean and polished. I will go through the manuscript with a fine-tooth comb during the final stages of the submission process, checking for:

Typographical errors
Proper word usage
Basic grammar
Consistency within format and punctuation
Typos, misspellings, and other discrepancies
Overall appearance, typeface, and fonts
Reader’s Report

Are you interested in knowing what I think of your work as a reader rather than an editor? This is a great option. I have been reviewing books for over three years and know what readers want and expect. I read across all genres of YA and can view your work critically and objectively.

You can find my reviews on my blog and on Goodreads

I will point out the strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript in a concise (between one and four pages) format. This report contains general thoughts about elements such as plot, character, and how compelling I find the work to be. What did I love? Where did I lose interest? I’ll let you know!

Note: If you are not sure which level of editing your manuscript needs. I would love to provide my recommendation with a sample edit.

*50 percent of payment is due at the start of editing. The remaining balance will be due at the completion of the project. Electronic submissions are edited with the Microsoft Word Track Changes feature.

message 60: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 2 comments Hello, my name is Rachel Strnad, and I'm an editor and book coach based out of Florida.

I have an MA in theology and creative writing, and five years’ experience writing and editing, both professionally and pro bono. This included a stint at a small press as their assistant managing editor. During that time, I managed the website content, wrote press releases for upcoming titles, and edited manuscripts.

I have also worked with Serpent and Dove Speculative fiction, proofreading and formatting their most recent anthology, Silent Screams, for Amazon print publication and KDP. You can find that book on Goodreads by following this link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

Currently, I'm the on-staff copy editor for SPS Publications' magazines The Linking Ring and The New Calliope.

My professional writing has appeared in the Canon Press Newsletter, My School Rocks! magazine, and Serpent and Dove's new anthology, Silent Screams.

I offer developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, and proofreading. For the sake of clarity, here is what I mean by those terms.

The developmental editor helps the author get his thoughts into a coherent vision, molding research into a specific book, helping construct an outline, and then guiding the author through the writing process. In fiction, the developmental editor also helps with world building and character and plot arcs.

Usually, someone needs a developmental editor if he has an outline but some major content isn't coming(or vice versa), if he has a first draft and doesn't know where to go with it, or if he is stuck.

I would not recommend developmental editing to someone who is two or three drafts in and not prepared to do some serious rewriting.

The line editor's job can be summed up in two basic questions: "What is the author trying to say?" and "Is the text saying it in the clearest and most elegant way possible?" In order to answer these questions, the line editor looks at not only grammar and punctuation, but things like syntax, word choice, word order, sentence and paragraph structure, filter words and the like.

Line editing may mean cutting superfluous material, adding more material, or asking the author for more material if needed. In fiction, the line editor looks for showing vs. telling, plot incoherence, character incoherence, maid-and-butler dialogue, anachronisms, and anything that may throw the reader out of the story.

Copy editing is cleaning up the text, like cleaning the kitchen after cooking a beautiful meal. The copy editor focuses primarily on grammar, punctuation, and spelling. While there may be some stylistic give-and-take between a line editor and the author, the copy editor does his utmost to stick with the rules and not let his personal style influence the editing job. If something is incoherent or unclear, the copy editor may alter the prose to fix it, or query the author if the change is big enough.

A Proofreader checks the final draft to make sure all the editing has been done correctly, and the manuscript is formatted properly. He looks for consistency errors, and checks the manuscript against the style guides. Though this is usually not part of a proofreader's job, I often format things like page numbers, footnotes, and the table of contents when I proofread.

I usually edit in MS word using the Track changes and comments features. If the comments start getting too substantive, in heavy line editing and developmental editing for example, I also write a separate editorial letter. Along with the letter, my client receives the marked up manuscript. If desired, I can send a clean, edited copy as well.

I prefer editing fiction, though I have some experience with non-fiction. The only genres I won't edit are erotica, LGBT, slasher horror, and self-help books.

If you would like to request a quote, or if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at redwalrusediting@gmail.com. You can also find me on Upwork.com under "Rachel Strnad."

I look forward to working with you!

Rachel Strnad

Hi everyone,
I am new to the world of freelance editing, but I do have experience from my BA in English. My concentration was creative writing because I love writing myself, but reading is another one of my passions. Actually, addiction is probably a more accurate word for it. Indie-authors are a passion of mine because I have found some of my favorite books through them and I would love to be a part of the process in inspiring others.

My experience is fiction, mostly romance (YA and New Adult), but I enjoy other genres as well!

Tony | 2 comments Collaborative Edits With Held Editing

I have edited over 100 books since 2012. I always work closely with my clients, sending them regular updates and queries, because I believe editing is a collaborative process.
I offer:

Proofreading
Copy editing
Line editing

My work covers considerably more than simply making sure your prose's grammar is fine and your writing is typo-free, however. If, say, you are writing a detective novel, and he/she is a likable sleuth, I am going to offer you suggestions as to plot and/or character detail that will help ensure your readers cheer on your heroes. No editing software ever made can offer writers that kind of encouragement, because technology is impersonal, and I always bring a personal touch to my editing work, because I love my work and want to see my clients succeed.

I work on the following genres:

Mystery (hard boiled detective, amateur sleuth, or police procedural-no courtroom drama or stories about corrupt cops getting away with breaking the law, please)
Historical (no preference at present)
Western (name says it all)
Action-adventure (ditto)
Fantasy (nothing too dark and brooding, please)
Literary (ditto)
Sci-fi (nothing dark and Orwellian, please).

I also edit blog posts, articles, letters, dissertations, etc.
If you are looking for a one-stop editing shop, Held Editing Services is it.

Testimonials

"Working with Tony Held helped me to significantly improve my book, add needed scenes/chapters and remove unnecessary elements. His chapter by chapter feedback was detailed and pointed out where I needed character or scene development, had inconsistencies from any point in the book to another or had simply nailed it and he loved it. He was timely in responses to me and I couldn't be more satisfied with the experience. I highly recommend working with Tony."

Patrick Adams
Owner, Patrick Adams Books

"Tony is a great editor, and he helped me to shape my text from a manuscript to a real book. He is precise and can spot even the tiniest awry detail in your text. Contacting him was easy and during the editing process he constantly kept me up to date. I recommend. And oh yes, he is a nice fellow!"

Carol Tietsworth | 26 comments Being a professionally trained proofreader as well as an experienced copy-editor makes me a good choice for the person looking for help with their manuscript. The fact that I am also a published author only makes me a better choice.

I have been proofreading and copy-editing for some time now, and I keep my fees lower than the norm because I know authors typically have to budget for these services. My low fees are a stress reliever. I also copy-edit part-time for two publishing houses.

I stay in email contact with my authors during the copy-editing process and send any questions I have to them, so our relationship stays true and current. In addition to the copy-editing, I also make suggestions, (in parentheses) to clarify a thought or passage. These suggestions are merely that, and not etched in stone.

I charge .003/word for proofreading, or $30.00 per 10,000 words and .004/word for copy-editing, or $40.00 per 10,000 words. If I contract for copy-editing I throw in the proofreading for free, as I'm already in there. Contact me at legal2b@yahoo.com with your word count for a quote. Or check out my Facebook page, Editing by Carol Tietsworth.

Craig Hall | 1 comments I am new to freelancing but have extensive experience editing technical documentation; I was employed by a NASA contractor for 26+ years as a writer/editor on a variety of document types. I have worked with procedures documents for Shuttle crews, contracts and administrative documents, policy documents, cargo descriptive documents, and more.

I have a bachelor's degree in both English and Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.

I have always been an avid reader and believed that editing fiction would be a great job; I now am in a position where I can begin doing just that.

My favorite authors have always been in the genre of human studies/life stories. These include John Irving, Amy Tan, John Updike, Anne Tyler, Chaim Potok, Larry McMurtry, and other similar styled authors. They tell beautiful stories of people caught up in life; so many possibilities.

Attention to detail, communication with authors, research ability, good grammar, and a genuine love of the written word are the hallmarks of a good editor.

Please feel free to contact me - craig@varcsolutions.com - to discuss terms; I would love to help you bring your imaginings to their fullest fruition. Both copy editing and proofing available.

Thanks,

CH

Carol Tietsworth | 26 comments For those unsure about what a copy editor does, I offer insight: a copy editor is more focused at the technical level. Unlike a line editor, who focuses on the way you use language to get your point across, or a developmental editor, who does character and story development, plot structure and the like,a copy editor requires rule -based understanding of American English usage. They correct spelling, grammar and punctuation, they ensure consistency, check for over-use of words, redundancies, run-on sentences, and flag ambiguous or factually incorrect statements. They will tell you if your story makes sense and if it tracks. They also may, and I do, suggest words or phrases that tighten or clarify your meaning.
