Sure, Rochester had a few flings with lovers, but he didn't give the impression that he was using the women just for the sake of it. He felt himself to be in love with Celine Varens when she revealed her true colours, and the fact that he took Adele under his roof even believing in his heart that she wasn't his child speaks a lot for him. He even lost his hand and sight attempting to save Bertha's life when she set the place on fire.
Heathcliff, on the other hand, was nasty all through. The way he treated the second Cathy, Hareton, and his own son Linton, just for revenge, is something I don't believe Rochester could ever have brought himself to do.
I've got to go with what Rochester said to Jane. 'Nature intended to me to be a good man really,' (or something like that). I don't believe the same could be said about Heathcliff.

Exactly my thoughts. He doesn't have any redeeming quality as basic humanity towards others . He tricked Isabella into marrying him , He near imprisoned Young Catherine and depraved Hareton of a good education which every child deserves. He was a literary sociopath.

Well said Paula.and i think Cathy is the same too.in that sense Cathy and Heathcliff were made for each other.i liked Cathy 2 and Linton in the story , if i remember correctly

The book was good.i disliked Scarlett but loved gone with the wind

Heathcliff was a fucking sociopath who I could never see myself falling for. Rochester, on the other hand, did seem to deeply and genuinely love Jane enough to redeem himself, even when she was no longer there by his side and I really hate the morality pet trope. He certainly started off as being cowardly for lying to Jane to attempt to tie the knot due to his own self-loathing and selfish desire to hold on to her, but he never meant her any harm. Plus, I’m a sucker for “Beauty and the Beast” style “love redeems” stories in which true love has the power to inspire redemption, which Jane Eyre partially was as a novel.
