Betty (nightreader) Just finished Annie's Ghosts by Steven Luxenberg and The Silver Ghost by Charlotte MacLeod, neither of which were about ghosts, followed by The Library Paradox by Catherine Shaw. I am currently reading "The African Queen" by C.S. Forester (how I loved the movie and so far the book is very similar) to be followed by The Gnostic Mystery, another review copy that just arrived.

I just finished Can You Keep a Secret. I usually don't read this genre, but it was actually pretty good.

message 53: by Betty (new)

Betty (nightreader) Finished the African Queen, great book, so close to the movie. Now 1/2 way through The Gnostic Mystery but just beginning to get into it; first part is discovery and history. Will be away for about 2 weeks starting in about a week, so not sure what I'll be reading next.

message 54: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia | 359 comments I'm finally finishing "A Curse Dark As Gold" by Elizabeth C. Bunce and will then read "American Rust" by Philipp Meyer.

message 55: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 47 comments Just finished the Subtle Knife and now I am reading Something Borrowed. So far I agree with Dottie's assessment - very high school drama-ish.

message 56: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) Currently reading Global Mind Shift by Edmund J. Bourne and am fascinated by it and the worldview it talks about.

Also reading A Thousand Days in Tuscany again, which I love for its lyrical writing, the description of the Tuscan countryside, and of course the amazing food they eat (complete with a few recipes!).

message 57: by Betty (new)

Betty (nightreader) On my last few pages of The Gnostic Mystery. Just about to start Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen.

I finished With These Hands by Louis L'Amore. I'm working on a few more of his stories.

message 59: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia | 359 comments I finished, "A Curse Dark As Gold" by Elizabeth C. Bunce...a really good story set in the 1700's based on the Rumplestiltskin fairy tale only with a twist. It is one of the winners of the '2009 Kansas Notable Books'. I'm starting "Witch Child" by Celia Rees, a fiction story set during the Salem Witch trials. Give me a good witch/witch trial story anytime! I had an ancestor tried for witchcraft in 1657-1658 in Hartford, CT...a few years before the famous Salem trials so these always intrigue me. She was aquitted so I'm guessing, her then husband, or she, had the money to pay for her release....fortunately for me today...:>

So far, the best fiction witchraft trial story I've ever read is "The Heretic's Daughter" by Kathleen Kent, based on her ancestor's witchcraft trial in Salem. I highly recommend this one if you want an accurate picture of what life was like for these poor women (and men) that had to endure the cruel superstitious stupidity during those times.

Shirley | 47 comments I finished Something Borrowed and now I am reading Admission another ARC. I've only read a few chapters, but so far I am enjoying it.

message 61: by Diana (new)

Diana | 1 comments I am reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Very funny. Also reading Guernsey Sweet Potato Pie... at the same time - like to have 2 books going at once and these are oh so different!!!

message 62: by Val (new)

Val Pearson | 1 comments I'm reading All the Right Reasons by Sandy James. LOVE IT!

message 63: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia | 359 comments I just finished "Relentless" by Dean Koontz and am finishing up "Witch Child" by Celia Rees. I'll probably try "Roadside Crosses" by Jeffery Deaver & "The Reformed Vampire Support Group" by Catherine Jinx next.

message 64: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Graf (rebeccagraf) I'm reading Billy Budd. There are so many of the classics that I either missed or were not interested in when I was in school. Now I'm old enough to appreciate them a little more.

Shirley - I'm so sorry for the late reply. I'm glad you liked the Twilight series. There is something about them (for all the criticism I have for them) I totally gravitate to the story.

I have also read the Pullen's series. They were great adventure stories. I love Lyra! I think she is spunky. I'm sure by this time you've probably already finished them. Did you like them?

I still have some lingering questions over the controversy surrounding those books. I couldn't really decide what the author was getting at in regards to religion. Maybe you picked up on something.

Thoughts?

LORRAINE | 18 comments I just read THE LAST QUEEN by C.W.Gortner and I really enjoyed it. My next book is FINGER LICKIN' FIFTEEN by Janet Evanovich.

I have just started reading the Amber Spyglass - and I also love this series. But like you, I was having trouble figuring out what the issues were with the Catholic Church. I didn't see any problems with the first two books. As I start this one, I am beginning to sense some of the issues. I will let you know my opinion when I finish. As of this moment, I think the whole controversy was very overrated and probably only contributed to more people seeing the Golden Compass than ordinarily would have.

message 76: by Betty (new)

Betty (nightreader) Currently reading "The Sky Rained Heroes" by Frederick E. LaCroix. Still struggling through "The Prodigal Tongue"... not the book's fault, not enough time this summer, but I'm whittling it down gradually!

Rita, I'm glad you've found this section!

I'm currently reading Moby Dick. I think it's much better now than when I tried to read it as a teenager.

Rita Webb (ritawebb) Aaaah, reading the classics. I've never read that one.

Julie (altbreed) | 9 comments Currently I am reading the Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and just finished Confrontations by Jacques Vallee. I am about 1/3 through Howard Zinn's A Peoples History of the United States, but I had to return it to the library (couldn't renew - there is a wait list), so I will get on the wait list and finish it when it is available again.

message 85: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia | 359 comments Finished "Breathless" by Dean Koontz and am still reading Anne Rice's book, "Angel Time". After that, I think I'll try Michael Crichton's "Pirate Latitudes".

message 86: by Rita (new)

Rita Webb (ritawebb) Over the Christmas holiday, I started and finished Shadow's Edge. Great book. Maybe even better than its prequel.

I also read Ménage à 20, Tales with a hook, an anthology that two of my stories were published in. (Yaaaay!)

Next I will be reading--oh geez, I don't know. I'm kinda busy with editing.
